We sought to correlate in vivo microvascular, systemic function, hemodynamic, and oxygenation changes in autologous shed blood (n = 4) and hemoglobin glutamer-200 (Hb-200) (n = 4) resuscitations in ...hypovolemic dogs. Hemorrhage (approximately 40% blood loss) reduced mean arterial pressure to approximately 50 mm Hg and caused significant (P < 0.01) decreases in hematocrit, total hemoglobin, mean pulmonary arterial pressure, cardiac output, and oxygen delivery and significant (P < 0.01) increases in heart rate, systemic vascular resistance, and lactic acidosis. Significant (P < 0.01) changes in conjunctival microvascular variables also occurred, including a 19% decrease in venular diameter and 79% increase in average blood flow velocity. Shed blood resuscitation returned microvascular, systemic function, hemodynamic, and oxygenation variables to prehemorrhagic baseline values. In contrast, Hb-200 failed to restore hematocrit, total hemoglobin, cardiac output, oxygen delivery index, and systemic venous resistance to baseline, but it restored other systemic functions and all hemodynamic and microvascular changes. In addition, Hb-200 resuscitation in hypovolemic dogs (approximately 40% blood loss) did not cause extreme hemodilution or fatal outcome. This study confirms that real-time (in vivo) microvascular studies, which were conducted only in small rodent models in the past, can be performed simultaneously with systemic function, hemodynamic, and oxygenation studies in a large animal model for relevant data correlation.
This is the first time that changes in the blood circulation have been studied, quantified, and correlated with systemic function, hemodynamic, and oxygenation changes in shock and during shock treatment in a large animal model. This study was performed by a new technology developed in-house to noninvasively and quantitatively study blood vessels in real time.
We present a study of the polarization of the Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) states using a 1.3 fb(-1) data sample collected by the D0 experiment in 2002-2006 during run II of the Fermilab Tevatron ...Collider. We measure the polarization parameter alpha=(sigma(T)-2 sigma(L))/(sigma(T)+2 sigma(L)), where sigma(T) and sigma(L) are the transversely and longitudinally polarized components of the production cross section, as a function of the transverse momentum (p(T)(Upsilon)) for the Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S). Significant p(T)(Upsilon)-dependent longitudinal polarization is observed for the Upsilon(1S). A comparison with theoretical models is presented.
Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) generated using arbitrary primers of 9, 10, 16 and 20 nucleotide lengths by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was investigated in 12 species of fishes. We found ...that the amplification products were best resolved by Urea-SDS-PAGE and detected by silver staining. The amplification products ranged from 25 to 75 depending on the primer and template combination. The random primers generated unique fingerprints for each species of fish in terms of number and position of RAPDs. Our results showed that the fish species can be distinguished from each other by RAPDs. The complexity of the RAPDs in the fingerprints may be manipulated to suit the requirement of the study. The use of RAPD in taxonomy, fishery management and fish culture is discussed.
Infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which has been characterized by fever, respiratory, and gastrointestinal ...symptoms as well as shedding of virus RNA into feces. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published gastrointestinal symptoms and detection of virus in stool and also summarized data from a cohort of patients with COVID-19 in Hong Kong.
We collected data from the cohort of patients with COVID-19 in Hong Kong (N = 59; diagnosis from February 2 through February 29, 2020),and searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and 3 Chinese databases through March 11, 2020, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We analyzed pooled data on the prevalence of overall and individual gastrointestinal symptoms (loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain or discomfort) using a random effects model.
Among the 59 patients with COVID-19 in Hong Kong, 15 patients (25.4%) had gastrointestinal symptoms, and 9 patients (15.3%) had stool that tested positive for virus RNA. Stool viral RNA was detected in 38.5% and 8.7% among those with and without diarrhea, respectively (P = .02). The median fecal viral load was 5.1 log10 copies per milliliter in patients with diarrhea vs 3.9 log10 copies per milliliter in patients without diarrhea (P = .06). In a meta-analysis of 60 studies comprising 4243 patients, the pooled prevalence of all gastrointestinal symptoms was 17.6% (95% confidence interval CI, 12.3–24.5); 11.8% of patients with nonsevere COVID-19 had gastrointestinal symptoms (95% CI, 4.1–29.1), and 17.1% of patients with severe COVID-19 had gastrointestinal symptoms (95% CI, 6.9–36.7). In the meta-analysis, the pooled prevalence of stool samples that were positive for virus RNA was 48.1% (95% CI, 38.3–57.9); of these samples, 70.3% of those collected after loss of virus from respiratory specimens tested positive for the virus (95% CI, 49.6–85.1).
In an analysis of data from the Hong Kong cohort of patients with COVID-19 and a meta-analysis of findings from publications, we found that 17.6% of patients with COVID-19 had gastrointestinal symptoms. Virus RNA was detected in stool samples from 48.1% patients, even in stool collected after respiratory samples had negative test results. Health care workers should therefore exercise caution in collecting fecal samples or performing endoscopic procedures in patients with COVID-19, even during patient recovery.

We describe 35 peripheral lymph nodes classified as mantle cell/marginal zone B-cell hyperplasia with clear cells using morphologic and immunologic findings. For the purpose of this study, we ...obtained clinical follow-up information and performed immunoglobulin gene rearrangement studies on paraffin sections by polymerase chain reaction. Architecturally, the nodes were suggestive of a benign process: no pericapsular infiltration, sinuses readily identified, scattered reactive follicles present, and paracortical nodular hyperplasia present. No monocytoid B cells were present. Focally, small lymphoid cells with round nuclei and clear cytoplasm (clear cells) formed monomorphic nodular, inverse follicular, and/or marginal zone patterns. Flow cytometry and immunohistochemical analysis revealed neither light chain restriction nor an aberrant B-cell phenotype. Immunoglobulin gene rearrangement studies showed a clonal band in 1 of 26 cases in which DNA was amplified. To ascertain the clinical relevance of this positive case, follow-up information was obtained 30 months after the initial biopsy; the 83-year-old woman was alive without treatment but had splenomegaly and bone marrow involvement by marginal zone B-cell lymphoma. The morphologic and immunologic criteria used for diagnosis of mantle cell/marginal zone B-cell hyperplasia with clear cytoplasm are valid; however, to rule out the possibility of occult lymphoma, immunoglobulin gene rearrangement studies and clinical follow-up are necessary.
Objective: To examine the sources of stress and the patterns of coping of spouses of persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI) among Hong Kong Chinese.
Design: A cross-sectional correlation design. A ...set of structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were administered.
Subjects: Forty spouses of persons with SCI were recruited and interviewed.
Outcome measures: These included coping strategies, depression, care-giving burden, life satisfaction and marital adjustment.
Results: The most stressful situations reported by the participants concerned health issues of their injured partners, the family and marital interactions, and the care-giving burden imposed on them. Cluster analysis indicated a potential at-risk group, characterized by high scores in external locus of control, inadequate coping modes and limited social support. They were noted to manifest high levels of depression, care-giving burden, low levels of life satisfaction and marital adjustment.
Conclusion: The identification of the potential at-risk group indicates that spouses of persons with SCI suffer levels of stress comparable to those of their injured partners. Rehabilitation plans should include this potential at-risk group to help them release the stress and to prevent them from developing clinically significant mental disorders.

(x∼0.3) (PMN-PT) single-crystal substrates. It has been found that the resistance of the LSMO films can be modulated by the converse piezoelectric effect of the PMN-PT substrates. Piezoelectric displacement measurements indicate that the converse piezoelectric effect induces lattice displacements in the PMN-PT substrates, which modulates the lattice strain and resistance of the LSMO films. Based on the experimental results, the relationship between the resistance of the LSMO films and the converse piezoelectric effect induced lattice strains in the PMN-PT substrates has been discussed.
