Objective
To investigate prevalence and recovery of olfactory dysfunction (OD) in COVID‐19 patients according to the disease severity.
Methods
From 22 March to 3 June 2020, 2581 COVID‐19 patients ...were identified from 18 European hospitals. Epidemiological and clinical data were extracted at baseline and within the 2‐month post‐infection.
Results
The prevalence of OD was significantly higher in mild form (85.9%) compared with moderate‐to‐critical forms (4.5–6.9%; P = 0.001). Of the 1916 patients with OD, 1363 completed the evaluations (71.1%). A total of 328 patients (24.1%) did not subjectively recover olfaction 60 days after the onset of the dysfunction. The mean duration of self‐reported OD was 21.6 ± 17.9 days. Objective olfactory evaluations identified hyposmia/anosmia in 54.7% and 36.6% of mild and moderate‐to‐critical forms, respectively (P = 0.001). At 60 days and 6 months, 15.3% and 4.7% of anosmic/hyposmic patients did not objectively recover olfaction, respectively. The higher baseline severity of objective olfactory evaluations was strongly predictive of persistent OD (P < 0.001).
Conclusion
OD is more prevalent in mild COVID‐19 forms than in moderate‐to‐critical forms. OD disappeared in 95% of patients regarding objective olfactory evaluations at 6 months.
Background and purpose
Post‐viral olfactory dysfunction is well established and has been shown to be a key symptom of COVID‐19 with more than 66% of European and US patients reporting some degree of ...loss of smell. Persistent olfactory dysfunction appears to be commonplace and will drive the demand for general practitioner, otolaryngology or neurology consultation in the next few months – evidence regarding recovery will be essential in counselling our patients.
Methods
This was a prospective survey‐based data collection and telemedicine follow‐up.
Results
In total, 751 patients completed the study, of whom 477 were females and 274 males. The mean age of the patients was 41 ± 13 years (range 18–60). There were 621 patients (83%) who subjectively reported a total loss of smell and 130 (17%) a partial loss. After a mean follow‐up of 47 ± 7 days (range 30–71) from the first consultation, 277 (37%) patients still reported a persistent subjective loss of smell, 107 (14%) reported partial recovery and 367 (49%) reported complete recovery. The mean duration of the olfactory dysfunction was 10 ± 6 days (range 3–31) in those patients who completely recovered and 12 ± 8 days (range 7–35) in those patients who partially recovered.
Conclusions
According to our results, at this relatively early point in the pandemic, subjective patterns of recovery of olfactory dysfunction in COVID‐19 patients are valuable for our patients, for hypothesis generation and for treatment development.
Summary
Background
The relationship between atopic dermatitis (AD), anxiety and depression in the U.S. adult population is not well established.
Objectives
To determine the relationship of AD and its ...severity with symptoms and diagnosis of anxiety and depression in U.S. adults.
Methods
A cross‐sectional, population‐based study of 2893 adults was performed. AD was determined using modified U.K. Diagnostic Criteria.
Results
Adults with AD vs. those without AD had higher mean Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale anxiety (HADS‐A) (7·7 vs. 5·6) and depression (HADS‐D) (6·0 vs. 4·3) scores and higher prevalences of abnormal (≥ 11) HADS‐A (28·6% vs. 15·5%) and HADS‐D (13·5% vs. 9·0%) scores. In multivariable linear and logistic regression models controlling for sociodemographics, AD was associated with significantly higher mean HADS‐A and HADS‐D scores (7·7 and 6·0) and higher odds of abnormal HADS‐A odds ratio (OR) 2·19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·65–2·91 and HADS‐D scores (OR 1·50, 95% CI 1·04–2·17) (P ≤ 0·03 for all). Mean and abnormal HADS‐A and HADS‐D scores were increased in moderate and severe/very severe self‐reported global AD severity, Patient‐Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM), Patient‐Oriented Scoring AD (PO‐SCORAD), PO‐SCORAD itch and sleep (P < 0·0001 for all). All respondents with severe PO‐SCORAD, POEM and PO‐SCORAD itch had borderline or abnormal HADS‐A and HADS‐D scores. Adults with AD vs. those without AD had higher prevalence of self‐reported healthcare‐diagnosed anxiety or depression in the past year (40·0% vs. 17·5%). Many adults with AD who had borderline and/or abnormal HADS‐A or HADS‐D scores reported no diagnosis of anxiety or depression.
Conclusions
AD is associated with significantly increased anxiety and depression, which may go undiagnosed.

Population-based estimates on the prevalence of atopic dermatitis in adults vary widely. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of atopic dermatitis in the population of the ...United States, the distribution of disease severity, and its impact on health-related quality of life. Among 1,278 participating adults, the prevalence (95% confidence interval) of atopic dermatitis was 7.3% (5.9–8.8). Overall, 60.1% (56.1–64.1) of participants were classified as having mild, 28.9% (25.3–32.7) as having moderate, and 11% as having severe (8.6–13.7) disease. Patients with atopic dermatitis and those with more severe disease had higher scores in the dermatology life quality index (mean standard deviation for AD patients = 4.71 6.44 vs. control individuals = 0.97 2.12) (P < 0.001) and the hospital anxiety (mean standard deviation for AD patients = 7.03 4.80 vs. control individuals = 4.73 4.8) and depression (mean, standard deviation for AD patients = 5.83 4.54 vs. control individuals = 3.62 3.61) scales, indicating a worse impact on quality of life and an increased likelihood of anxiety or depression. Based on our prevalence estimates, 16.5 million adults would have a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis, with 6.6 million meeting criteria for moderate to severe disease. Our study confirms the high prevalence and disease burden of atopic dermatitis in this population.
The long-term recovery rate of chemosensitive functions in coronavirus disease 2019 patients has not yet been determined.
A multicentre prospective study on 138 coronavirus disease 2019 patients was ...conducted. Olfactory and gustatory functions were prospectively evaluated for 60 days.
Within the first 4 days of coronavirus disease 2019, 84.8 per cent of patients had chemosensitive dysfunction that gradually improved over the observation period. The most significant increase in chemosensitive scores occurred in the first 10 days for taste and between 10 and 20 days for smell. At the end of the observation period (60 days after symptom onset), 7.2 per cent of the patients still had severe dysfunctions. The risk of developing a long-lasting disorder becomes significant at 10 days for taste (odds ratio = 40.2, 95 per cent confidence interval = 2.204-733.2, p = 0.013) and 20 days for smell (odds ratio = 58.5, 95 per cent confidence interval = 3.278-1043.5, p = 0.005).
Chemosensitive disturbances persisted in 7.2 per cent of patients 60 days after clinical onset. Specific therapies should be initiated in patients with severe olfactory and gustatory disturbances 20 days after disease onset.
Objective
To investigate the clinical features of patients who had two demonstrated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) episodes.
Methods
Data of patients with both COVID‐19 episodes were recruited ...from 22 March to 27 December 2020. The following outcomes were studied: epidemiological, comorbidities, prevalence and severity of general and otolaryngological symptom, olfactory, aroma, and gustatory dysfunctions. A comparison between first and second episodes was performed.
Results
Forty‐five patients reported having two confirmed COVID‐19 episodes. The majority of patients had mild infections in both episodes. The second clinical episode was significantly similar to the first. The symptom duration of the second episode was shorter than the first. The occurrence of loss of smell was unpredictable from the first to the second episode.
Conclusion
The recurrence of COVID‐19 symptoms is associated with a similar clinical picture than the first episode in patients with initial mild‐to‐moderate COVID episode. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of second episode remain uncertain and may involve either true reinfection or virus reactivation from sanctuaries.
Abstract
Aims
To determine the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) defined as the combined endpoint of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) among patients with psoriatic ...arthritis (PsA), psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared with population controls.
Methods and results
A cohort study was conducted in a primary care medical record database in the UK with data from 1994–2014 among patients with PsA, RA, or psoriasis. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate the relative hazards for DVT, PE, and VTE. An interaction with disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARD) was hypothesized a priori and was significant. Patients with PsA (n = 12 084), RA (n = 51 762), psoriasis (n = 194 288) and controls (n = 1 225 571) matched on general practice and start date were identified. Patients with RA (with and without a DMARD prescription) and patients with mild psoriasis had significantly elevated risks of VTE (HR 1.35, 1.29, and 1.07, respectively) after adjusting for traditional risk factors. Severe psoriasis and PsA prescribed a DMARD had an elevated but not statistically significant risk for VTE. Findings were similar for DVT. The age-and-sex-adjusted risk of PE was elevated in RA, severe psoriasis and PsA patients prescribed a DMARD.
Conclusion
While systemic inflammation is a risk factor for VTE, the risk of VTE compared with controls is different among patients with three different inflammatory disorders: RA, PsA, and psoriasis.

To compare the overall risk of cancer, and specific cancers of interest, in patients with psoriasis compared with patients without psoriasis.
Population-based cohort study of patients ages 18 to 89 years with no medical history of human immunodeficiency virus, cancer, organ transplants, or hereditary disease (albinism and xeroderma pigmentosum), prior to the start date, conducted using The Health Improvement Network, a primary care medical records database in the United Kingdom. The data analyzed had been collected prospectively from 2002 through January 2014. The analysis was completed in August 2015.
Patients with at least 1 diagnostic code for psoriasis were classified as having moderate-to-severe disease if they had been prescribed psoralen, methotrexate, cyclosporine, acitretin, adalimumab, etanercept, infliximab, or ustekinumab or phototherapy for psoriasis. Patients were classified as having mild disease if they never received treatment with any of these agents.
Incident cancer diagnosis.
A total of 937,716 control group patients without psoriasis, matched on date and practice visit, and 198,366 patients with psoriasis (186,076 with mild psoriasis and 12,290 with moderate-to-severe disease) were included in the analysis. The adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) with 95% CIs for any incident cancer excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) were 1.06 (95% CI, 1.02-1.09), 1.06 (95% CI, 1.02-1.09), and 1.08 (95% CI, 0.96-1.22) in the overall, mild, and severe psoriasis group. The aHRs for incident lymphoma were 1.34 (95% CI, 1.18-1.51), 1.31 (95% CI, 1.15-1.49), and 1.89 (95% CI, 1.25-2.86); for NMSC, 1.12 (95% CI, 1.07-1.16), 1.09 (95% CI, 1.05-1.13), and 1.61 (95% CI, 1.42-1.84); and for lung cancer, 1.15 (95% CI, 1.03-1.27), 1.12 (95% CI, 1.01-1.25), and 1.62 (95% CI, 1.16-2.28) in the overall, mild, and severe psoriasis groups, respectively. No significant association was seen with cancer of the breast, colon, prostate, or leukemia.
The association between psoriasis and cancer, albeit small, was present in our cohort of patients with psoriasis. This association was primarily driven by NMSC, lymphoma, and lung cancer.

Terrestrial sunlight is the portion of electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by the sun and reaches Earth's surface. It encompasses 3 major components: UV radiation (290-400 nm), visible light ...(400-700 nm), and infrared radiation. The deleterious effects of UV radiation have been appreciated for decades, particularly among those with light skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I-II) who primarily manifest with burns of varying degrees of severity with sun exposure. In recent years, studies have increasingly shown the negative impact of visible light on skin health, particularly in individuals with skin of color (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI), including the exacerbation of hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, as well as induction of the former. Recommendations from medical societies and the US Food and Drug Administration for photoprotection have been evolving along with the knowledge base. Yet, misconceptions about skin damage related to sunlight and the benefits of photoprotection (particularly among those with Fitzpatrick skin types V-VI) are still prevalent among both clinicians and patients. Among patients with skin of color, disorders of hyperpigmentation and other consequences from sun exposure have been associated with impaired skin health and negative burden on quality of life. This review summarizes currently available evidence of the impact of both UV and visible wavelengths and the low utilization of photoprotection measures among people with skin of color, with the goal of providing recommendations to help educate patients.
