Starburst galaxies and star-forming active galactic nuclei are among the candidate sources thought to contribute appreciably to the extragalactic gamma-ray and neutrino backgrounds. NGC 1068 is the ...brightest of the star-forming galaxies found to emit gamma-rays from 0.1 to 50 GeV. Precise measurements of the high-energy spectrum are crucial to study the particle accelerators and probe the dominant emission mechanisms. We have carried out 125 hr of observations of NGC 1068 with the MAGIC telescopes in order to search for gamma-ray emission in the very-high-energy band. We did not detect significant gamma-ray emission, and set upper limits at the 95% confidence level to the gamma-ray flux above 200 GeV f < 5.1 × 10−13 cm−2 s−1. This limit improves previous constraints by about an order of magnitude and allows us to put tight constraints on the theoretical models for the gamma-ray emission. By combining the MAGIC observations with the Fermi-LAT spectrum we limit the parameter space (spectral slope, maximum energy) of the cosmic ray protons predicted by hadronuclear models for the gamma-ray emission, while we find that a model postulating leptonic emission from a semi-relativistic jet is fully consistent with the limits. We provide predictions for IceCube detection of the neutrino signal foreseen in the hadronic scenario. We predict a maximal IceCube neutrino event rate of 0.07 yr−1.
The aim of study was to assess prognostic significance of left atrial (LA) functional parameters and levels of biomarkers in patients (pts) with severe chronic heart failure (CHF) and preserved left ...ventricular (LV) systolic function. Methods. Prognostic value of LA functional parameters, levels of BNP., NT-proBNP and high sensitivity C reactive protein (CRP) was assesed in 128 pts (age 63.2±1.7) with III-IV NYHA functional calss CHF and preserved LV systolic function (LV EF >50%). Results. During 37±0.8 months from cardiac causes died 43 (33.6%) pts. In Kaplan-Mayer analisys survival rate was 62, 63 и 64% in pts with levels of BNP >300 pg/ml, NT-proBNP ≥1500 pg/ml and CRP≥15 ng/ml and 85, 86 и 84% (p
The aim of study was to assess the efficacy of ivabradine (I, up to 15 mg) therapy on prognosis, right ventricular (RV) and atrial (RA) functional parameters, BNP, NT-pro-BNP and high sensitivity С ...reactive protein (CRP) levels in patients (pts) with III- IV NYHA FC systolic CHF. Methods. 76 pts with DCM (age 57.4) were randomly assigned to groups A (n=38, non receiving ivabradin, I) and group В (n=38, receiving I, 15 mg) in addition to ACEIs, diuretics, beta-blockers and digoxin. 1-, 2- and З-year mortality were 34.2, 39.5 and 50% in group A and 21.1, 28.9 and 39.5% in group B. Survival analysis revealed lower probability of 1-year, 2-year and З-year mortality (RR reduction at 38.3,26.8 and 21%) in pts, treated with I (p50%, hsCRP>40% and HR>40% and increase of RV EF and E/A at >25%, TAPSE>50% and RA functional index >60% after 1 year identified pts with cardiac events reduction. 2) Prognostic benefit, associated with I use, seems to be related to improvement of right heart parameters, neurohormonal and inflammation status and HR reduction.
