Despite the important role of taste function in nutrition and health, little is known about changes in taste function caused by Parkinson disease (PD). The taste function of 31 PD patients and 29 ...healthy controls was assessed quantitatively using filter paper taste strip tests (TSTs) impregnated with four basic taste qualities at four different concentrations. The mean TST score was significantly lower in PD patients, as a consequence of taste impairment in the female PD patients (it did not differ significantly in males), which was likely to be attributable to the lower Mini-Mental State Examination score in patients with PD than in controls in women. TST scores in PD patients were not correlated with patient age, duration, or severity of their PD, or olfactory function. The findings of our study suggest that taste dysfunction should be included in the list of nonmotor symptoms of PD.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) can be used to detect optic neuritis (ON). However, the comparative sensitivities of OCT and VEPs for detecting ON in ...neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) are unclear, and so we assessed these sensitivities.
This cross-sectional study included 73 patients with aquaporin-4 antibody-seropositive NMOSD, and 101 eyes with ON. The clinical characteristics, visual acuity (VA), Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores, OCT peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, and VEPs of the patients were evaluated.
OCT and VEPs were abnormal in 68% and 73% of eyes with a history of ON, respectively, and in 2% and 9% of eyes without ON. Test sensitivities were influenced by the number of ON episodes: the OCT RNFL thickness and VEPs were abnormal in 50% and 67% of the eyes with first-ever ON episode, respectively (p=0.041), with the combination of both tests detecting abnormalities in up to 75% of the eyes. The sensitivities of the OCT RNFL thickness and VEPs increased to 95% and 83%, respectively, after the second or subsequent ON episode (p=0.06), with the combination of both tests detecting abnormalities in 95% of cases. The OCT RNFL thickness and VEP latency/amplitude were correlated with EDSS scores and VA.
VEPs were superior for detecting subclinical or first-ever ON, while OCT was better for detecting eyes with multiple ON episodes. The correlations of OCT and VEPs with clinical disability measures indicate that these tests are potential markers of the disease burden in NMOSD.

Post-encephalitic parkinsonism is a rare condition described in patients with encephalitis by the Japanese B virus, St Louis virus, West Nile virus, and HIV, and also in patients with encephalitis lethargica.1 It may develop in the acute phase of encephalitis, improving with time, or develop as a delayed form, possibly through immune mechanisms.2 Antiparkinsonian treatment, including levodopa, is usually very effective in both conditions.
Novel program and read schemes are presented to break barriers in scaling of NAND flash memory such as threshold voltage endurance from floating gate interference, and charge loss tolerance. To ...enhance threshold voltage endurance and charge loss tolerance, we introduced three schemes; MSB Re-PGM scheme, Moving Read scheme and Adaptive Code Selection scheme. Using the MSB Re-PGM scheme, threshold voltage distribution width is improved about 200 mV. The PGM throughput is enhanced from 1500 μs to 1250 μs. With the Moving Read scheme about half order of UBER is improved with 10 bit ECC. Also, Adaptive Code Selection scheme are used to decrease a current consumption. There is 5.5% current reduction. With these techniques, 32-Gb MLC NAND flash memory has been fabricated using a 32 nm CMOS process technology. Its program throughput reaches 13.0 MB/s at a multi-plane program operation with cache operation keeping a desirable threshold voltage distribution.
Antiganglioside antibodies are known to play a pathogenic role in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Either an immunoglobulin (Ig)G- or IgM-type anti-GM2 antibody is detected in rare cases in GBS ...patients. However, the specific pathogenic role of these antibodies in GBS has not been reported previously. This study aimed to define and characterize the clinical spectrum of GBS with anti-GM2 positivity.
We reviewed the database of the Dong-A University Neuroimmunology Team, which has collected sera of GBS and its variants from more than 40 general and university-based hospitals in Korea. Detailed information about the involved patients was often obtained and then corrected by the charge doctor applying additional questionnaires.
Four patients with acute monophasic peripheral neuropathy or cranial neuropathy with isolated IgM-type anti-GM2-antibody positivity were recruited. In addition, IgG-type anti-GM2 antibody was solely detected in the sera of another four patients. The IgM-positive group comprised heterogeneous syndromes: two cases of acute motor axonal neuropathy, one of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, and one of isolated facial diplegia. In contrast, all of the cases enrolled in the IgG-positive group manifested with dizziness with or without oculomotor palsy due to cranial neuropathy syndrome.
This study has identified that anti-GM2 antibody can be found in various subtypes of GBS and its variants in rare cases. Compared to the clinical heterogeneity of the IgM-positive group, the IgG-positive group can be characterized by cranial-dominant GBS variants presenting mainly with oculomotor and vestibular dysfunctions.
Background:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) in Asia is thought to have different clinical characteristics from MS in Western countries; however, previous studies in Asia were performed without properly ...differentiating neuromyelitis optica (NMO) from MS.
Objectives:
To evaluate the clinical characteristics of MS in Korea after careful exclusion of potential explanations other than MS, particularly NMO spectrum disorder (NMOSD).
Methods:
This study is a retrospective review of consecutive MS patients attending five referral hospitals in Korea. All patients’ MS diagnoses were re-evaluated.
Results:
Of the 105 patients, 70 were female and 35 were male. The mean age of onset was 30.4 years and the mean disease duration was 5.4 years. On initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 58% and 64% fulfilled the criteria for dissemination in space for the 2005 and 2010 McDonald criteria, respectively. Spinal cord lesions were observed in 78% of patients, primarily present as multiple small lesions with a mean length of 0.9 vertebral segments. The median time from disease onset to an Expanded Disability Status Scale 6 was 20 years.
Conclusions:
After careful exclusion of NMOSD, we found that the clinical pattern of MS in Korea does not fundamentally differ from that seen in Western countries.
Recently published, evidence-based guidelines should alter the management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)/motor neuron disease (MND). However, the newest recommendations for ALS/MND therapy ...are not reflected in actual clinical practice. We sought to evaluate the current status of the diagnosis and management of ALS in Korea.
The Korean ALS/MND research group was organized in 2010, involving more than 50 neurologists from neuromuscular centers in Korea. Participating centers collected data from April to September 2010 on the diagnosis and management of patients with ALS. Data forms from the ALS patient care database, which is a component of the ALS clinical assessment, research, and education program (http://www.outcomes-umassmed.org/ALS/), were modified and used for data collection.
In total, 373 sporadic ALS cases from 35 centers were enrolled. The demographic features and clinical findings were similar to those in previous reports from other countries. The mean age at onset was 50-60 years, and a slight male predominance was observed. The enrolled patients predominantly showed focal onset of cervical or lumbosacral symptoms. Only about one-half of the indicated patients (31.4%) received a physician's recommendation for a parenteral gastrostomy, and 18.1% underwent the procedure. Noninvasive ventilation was recommended in 23% of patients, but applied in only 9.5% of them. Tracheostomy was performed in 12.7% of patients.
The demographic and clinical features of the diagnosis and management of ALS in Korea are similar to those reported in other countries; however, supportive management, as recommended in evidence-based guidelines, are not yet widely recommended or performed for patients with ALS in Korea.
Background
Therapeutic decisions for degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) are complex and should consider various factors. We aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models for classifying ...expert-level therapeutic decisions in patients with DCM.
Methods
This retrospective cross-sectional study included patients diagnosed with DCM, and the diagnosis of DCM was confirmed clinically and radiologically. The target outcomes were defined as conservative treatment, anterior surgical approaches (ASA), and posterior surgical approaches (PSA). We performed the following classifications using ML algorithms: multiclass, one-versus-rest, and one-versus-one. Two ensemble ML algorithms were used: random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGB). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) was the primary metric. We also identified the variable importance for each classification.
Results
In total, 304 patients were included (109 conservative, 66 ASA, 125 PSA, and 4 combined surgeries). For multiclass classification, the AUC-ROC of RF and XGB models were 0.91 and 0.92, respectively. In addition, ML models showed AUC-ROC values of >0.9 for all types of binary classifications. Variable importance analysis revealed that the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association score and central motor conduction time were the two most important variables for distinguishing between conservative and surgical treatments. When classifying ASA and PSA, the number of involved levels, age, and body mass index were important contributing factors.
Conclusion
ML-based classification of DCM therapeutic options is valid and feasible. This study can be a basis for establishing generalizable ML-based surgical decision models for DCM. Further studies are needed with a large multicenter database.
We investigated the validity of the 2005 and 2010 McDonald magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) criteria for dissemination in space (DIS) to predict the conversion of clinically definite multiple ...sclerosis (CDMS) in 94 Korean patients with clinically isolated syndromes (CIS). The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative predictive values of the 2005, 2010 McDonald DIS criteria were comparable to those observed in the Caucasian population. This finding suggests that after careful exclusion of alternative explanations, particularly neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and NMO spectrum disorder (NMOSD), both the 2005 and 2010 McDonald DIS criteria are also useful to predict conversion to CDMS in Korean patients with CIS.
