We studied the use of powered ankle-foot orthoses (PAFOs) and walking stability of the wearers, focusing on the ankle joint, which is known to play a critical role in gait stability. Recognizing that ...the subtalar joint is an important modulator of walking stability, we conducted the walking experiment on a treadmill by applying varying assistance techniques to the 2-degree-of-freedom (DOF) PAFO, which has the subtalar joint as the rotating axis, and the commonly used 1-DOF PAFO. The participants were 8 healthy men (mean±SD: height, 174.8±7.1 cm; weight, 69.8±6.5 kg; and age, 29.1±4.8 years) with no history of gait abnormality. Center of pressure (COP) was measured with an in-shoe pressure sensor, and stability was estimated on the basis of the angular acceleration measured with the inertial measurement unit attached to the trunk. The experimental results of the 2-DOF PAFO, with or without assistance, showed a significantly higher stability than those of the 1-DOF PAFO (up to 23.78%, p<0.0326). With the 1-DOF PAFO, the stability deteriorated with the increase in the degree of assistance provided. With the 2-DOF PAFO, this tendency was not observed. Thus, the importance of the subtalar joint was proven using PAFOs. The mean position analysis of the COP during the stance phase confirmed that the COP highly correlated with stability (Pearson correlation coefficient: -0.6607). Thus, we conclude that only the 2-DOF PAFO can maintain walking stability, regardless of the assistance characteristics, by preserving the COP in the medial position through eversion. Awareness regarding the role of the subtalar joint is necessary during the manufacture or use of PAFOs, as lack of awareness could lead to the degradation of the wearer's gait stability, regardless of effective assistance, and deteriorate the fundamental functionality of PAFO.
Renal fibrosis is the histological manifestation of a progressive, usually irreversible process causing chronic and end-stage kidney disease. We performed genome-wide transcriptome studies of a large ...cohort (n = 95) of normal and fibrotic human kidney tubule samples followed by systems and network analyses and identified inflammation and metabolism as the top dysregulated pathways in the diseased kidneys. In particular, we found that humans and mouse models with tubulointerstitial fibrosis had lower expression of key enzymes and regulators of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and higher intracellular lipid deposition compared to controls. In vitro experiments indicated that inhibition of FAO in tubule epithelial cells caused ATP depletion, cell death, dedifferentiation and intracellular lipid deposition, phenotypes observed in fibrosis. In contrast, restoring fatty acid metabolism by genetic or pharmacological methods protected mice from tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Our results raise the possibility that correcting the metabolic defect in FAO may be useful for preventing and treating chronic kidney disease.
Sustained shoulder abduction, which results from an inappropriate worktable height or tool shape and long task hours, leads to an accumulation of muscle fatigue and subsequent work-related injuries ...in workers. It can be alleviated by controlling the table height or ergonomic tool design, but workers who are doing some types of work that require a discomfortable posture, such as minimally invasive surgery, cannot avoid these situations. Loads to the shoulder joint or muscles result in several problems, such as muscle fatigue, deterioration of proprioception or changing movement strategies of the central nervous system, and these are critical to work that requires a high accuracy of the upper extremities. Therefore, in this paper, we designed and conducted an experiment with human participants to discuss how an inappropriate height of the work-table affects the task performance of workers who are performing a fine manipulative task that requires high accuracy of the end point. We developed an apparatus that can control the height and has four touch screens to evaluate the end-point accuracy with two different heights. Eighteen adults (9 women and 9 men) participated in the experiments, and the electromyography of their shoulder muscles, their movement stability, and task performance were measured for the analysis. We found that inappropriate height of a table brings about muscle fatigue, and time elapsed for conducting tasks accelerated the phenomenon. Task performance deteriorated according to increased fatigue, and improved movement stability is not enough to compensate for these situations.
Obesity is a lipid metabolism disorder caused by genetic, medicinal, nutritional, and other environmental factors. It is characterized by a complex condition of excess lipid accumulation in ...adipocytes. Adipogenesis is a differentiation process that converts preadipocytes into mature adipocytes and contributes to excessive fat deposition. Saikosaponin A (SSA) and saikosaponin D (SSD) are triterpenoid saponins separated from the root of the Bupleurum chinensis, which has long been used to treat inflammation, fever, and liver diseases. However, the effects of these constituents on lipid accumulation and obesity are poorly understood. We investigated the anti-obesity effects of SSA and SSD in mouse 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The MTT assay was performed to measure cell viability, and Oil Red O staining was conducted to determine lipid accumulation. Various adipogenic transcription factors were evaluated at the protein and mRNA levels by Western blot assay and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Here, we showed that SSA and SSD significantly inhibited lipid accumulation without affecting cell viability within the range of the tested concentrations (0.938-15 µM). SSA and SSD also dose-dependently suppressed the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), CCAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha (C/EBPα), sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), and adiponectin. Furthermore, the decrease of these transcriptional factors resulted in the repressed expression of several lipogenic genes including fatty acid binding protein (FABP4), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and lipoprotein lipase (LPL). In addition, SSA and SSD enhanced the phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and its substrate, acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and inhibited the phosphorylation of extracellular-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and p38, but not c-Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK). These results suggest that SSA and SSD inhibit adipogenesis through the AMPK or mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways in the early stages of adipocyte differentiation. This is the first study on the anti-adipogenic effects of SSA and SSD, and further research in animals and humans is necessary to confirm the potential of saikosaponins as therapeutic agents for obesity.
To investigate the influences of smartphone use on ocular symptoms, status of the tear film, and oxidative stress indices in the tears and at the ocular surface.
Eighty healthy volunteers were ...enrolled in the study. Subjective symptoms and asthenopia were evaluated using the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), visual analogue scale (VAS), and computer vision syndrome (CVS) score before and after smartphone or computer display (control) use. The status of the tear film was evaluated using fluorescein film break-up time (FBUT), non-invasive keratograph break up time (NIKBUT), Schirmer score, keratoepitheliopathy (KEP), and tear meniscus height (TMH). Oxidative stress markers in the tear film including hexanoyl lysine (HEL), 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE), malondialdehyde (MDA), and 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in the tear film were measured using ELISA. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the ocular surface were measured through 2',7'-dichloro-dihydrofluorescein diacetate. All measurements were conducted at baseline, and after use for 1 and 4 h.
All parameters showed no significant group-wise differences at baseline. Scores of OSDI, VAS, fatigue, burning sensation, and dryness showed significant increases after 1 and 4 h of smartphone use compared with those at baseline (all P < 0.05). The smartphone group showed higher OSDI, fatigue, burning, and dryness scores than the control group at 4 h. Smartphone use showed significantly decreased FBUT and NIBUT at 4 h than those at baseline (P < 0.01). In the smartphone group, the concentration of HEL significantly increased at 4 h compared with that at baseline and 1 h (P < 0.01). Both groups showed increased ROS with higher value in the smartphone group versus the control group at 4 h (P < 0.01).
Smartphone use could not only aggravate subjective symptom indices such as the OSDI, VAS, and CVS but also induce tear film instability and oxidative stress indices in the tears and at the ocular surface.

•The Venturi nozzle design with entry and exit angles, which leads the self-sucked air flow.•Microbubbles generation regarding to entry and exit angles.•High speed visualization study to track the ...self-sucked air flow stream broken into microbubbles.
We studied the effect of varying the entry and exit angles of Venturi nozzles on the formation of microbubbles in Venturi nozzle-type microbubble generators. We 3D-printed nozzles with five entry angles (15, 22, 30, 38 and 45°) and five exit angles (15, 22, 30, 38 and 45°). For the visualization experiment, we inserted the nozzles into a cover case made of aluminum and transparent acrylic. We measured the pressure drop and the air flow rate with respect to the entry and exit angles, determined the diameters of the bubbles using a digital camera, and analyzed bubble breakage by observing the behavior of the bubbles using a high-speed camera. We confirmed that the exit angle (not the entry angle) is dependent on the pressure drop and found that the air flow rate did not vary linearly with the fluid flow rate, as expected according to Bernoulli's theorem. Instead, it tended to remain constant or decrease as the fluid flow rate increased due to the abnormal flow. The sizes of the bubbles decreased as the exit angle increased, except in cases where the outlet angle was greater than 30° at high flow rates (260–300 LPM). We observed a change in bubble size with respect to exit angle. According to our visualization, the bubbles were broken by the flow separation at the beginning of the divergence at the exit.
Abstract
Background
Although the ankle strategy is important for achieving frontal plane stability during one-leg stance, previously developed powered ankle–foot orthoses (PAFOs) did not involve ...ankle strategies because of hardware limitations. Weakness of movement in frontal plane is a factor that deteriorates gait stability and increases fall risk so it should not be overlooked in rehabilitation. Therefore, we used PAFO with subtalar joint for frontal plane movement and tried to confirm that the existence of it is important in balancing through clinical experiments.
Methods
We developed a proportional CoP controller to assist ankle strategy or stabilizing moment and enhance eversion to compensate for the tilting moment with 2
dof
PAFO. It was true experimental study, and we recruited seven healthy subjects (30 ± 4 years) who did not experience any gait abnormality participated in walking experiments for evaluating the immediate effect of subtalar joint of PAFO on their gait stability. They walked on the treadmill with several cases of controllers for data acquisitions. Indices of gait stability and electromyography for muscle activity were measured and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to identify meaningful changes.
Results
We found that subjects were most stable during walking (in terms of largest Lyapunov exponents, p < 0.008) with the assistance of the PAFO when their electromyographic activity was the most reduced (p < 0.008), although postural sway increased when a proportional CoP controller was used to assist the ankle strategy (p < 0.008). Other indices of gait stability, kinematic variability, showed no difference between the powered and unpowered conditions (p > 0.008). The results of the correlation analysis indicate that the actuator of the PAFO enhanced eversion and preserved the location of the CoP in the medial direction so that gait stability was not negatively affected or improved.
Conclusions
We verified that the developed 2
dof
PAFO assists the ankle strategy by compensating for the tilting moment with proportional CoP controller and that wearer can walk in a stable state when the orthosis provides power for reducing muscle activity. This result is meaningful because an ankle strategy should be considered in the development of PAFOs for enhancing or even rehabilitating proprioception.

•The stainless steel modified surface was fabricated for chevron plate heat exchanger.•The anti-fouling performance would be estimated on bare, modified, PMMA and BN coated.•The dynamic wetting ...characteristics could be possible to explain the anti-fouling performance.
In this study, we aimed to develop a method for modifying SUS304 with micro/nanoscale holes using an electrical etching technique, and evaluated its impact on the anti-fouling performance of chevron plate heat exchangers. The modified SUS304 specimen exhibited hydrophobic wetting characteristics; however, water droplets stuck to the wall under inclined orientations at angles of 30° and 60°. We coated the modified SUS304 specimen with polymer (polymethyl methacrylate; PMMA) and hexagonal boron nitride (BN) particles to realize the hydrophobic and superhydrophobic wetting characteristics. To evaluate the anti-fouling performance of the heat exchanger, we carried out fouling acceleration experiments in a 2000 ppm CaCO3 solution for 2 h. The anti-fouling performance was determined by measuring the overall heat transfer coefficients during fouling acceleration experiments. As the operation time increased, the CaCO3 particles were deposited on the surface of the heat exchanger, the overall heat transfer coefficient decreased, and the fouling factor ultimately increased. Out of bare, modified, PMMA- and BN-coated heat exchangers, the PMMA-coated heat exchanger exhibited the strongest anti-fouling performance, with the lowest increment in the fouling factor. Based on analysis of the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) in each case, we suggest that CaCO3 particles in solution would be deposited better in the case of the highest CAH. This is possible in cases without the triple contact line, and is caused by filling the polymer into micro/nano holes on the modified surface.
Transformer-type superconducting fault current limiter (TSFCL) interruption system is a current breaking technology proposed by applying a transformer, superconductor, and mechanical dc circuit ...breaker. When the fault occurs, the fault current is limited due to the operation of the counter electromotive force by the transformer and the quenching of the superconductor. The fault current is then interrupted by the mechanical dc circuit breaker. In this paper, the transition and the interrupting behavior was analyzed according to the applied voltage to secure the stability and reliability of a TSFCL interruption system using the PSCAD EMTDC program. As a result, it was able to improve the current breaking time and the breaking capacity. Also, the burden imposed on a mechanical dc circuit breaker was reduced fivefold.
