A measurement of the proton spin structure function g1p(x,Q{sup 2}) in deep-inelastic scattering is presented. The data were taken with the 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarised positron beam at HERA ...incident on a longitudinally polarised pure hydrogen gas target internal to the storage ring. The kinematic range is 0.021<x<0.85 and 0.8 GeV{sup 2}<Q{sup 2}<20 GeV{sup 2}.
Data taken with the CYGNUS detector between 1989 September and 1993 January have been used to search for 1-s bursts of ultrahigh-energy gamma rays from point sources at arbitrary locations in the ...northern sky. We find no evidence for such bursts. We set a theory-dependent upper limit on the rate-density of evaporating black holes of 8.5 x 10 exp 5/cu yr at the 99 percent C.L. When the same emission spectrum is used to recalculate previous upper limits based on direct searches, this limit is the most restrictive by nearly 2 orders of magnitude.
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) calorimeter regional trigger system is designed to detect signatures of isolated and non-isolated electrons/photons, jets, /spl tau/-leptons, and missing and total ...transverse energy using a deadtimeless pipelined architecture. This system contains 18 crates of custom-built electronics, including a backplane, boards, links and Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). We present results from testing a completely instrumented and fully functional preproduction system. We also describe the production testing of the final system, including the custom software necessary to automate the process of testing a large quantity of high-speed and dense electronics.
