This qualitative study used socialization theory to examine the factors associated with an undergraduate research program designed to prepare students of color for faculty careers. By participating ...in an undergraduate research program, participants indicated they had the academic ability and positive attitudes needed to pursue high prestige careers in and out of the academy. Non-programmatic factors examined were individual background characteristics (e.g., race, ethnicity, socio-economic status), educational discrimination, and career aspirations. Findings revealed contrasting norms associated with racial and ethnic identity among the participants in this study. Four programmatic factors examined were mentors, peers, finances, and research experience. Faculty mentors shared their research expertise, but participants only gained a one-dimensional view of the academic profession. The tenure process created uncertainty in pursuing entry-level faculty positions for advanced doctoral students. Participants valued peer relationships in community building with other doctoral students of color. This dissertation provides several policy recommendations for improving the operation of minority faculty preparation programs. For example, I urge programs to incorporate race and ethnicity into the program's intellectual profile and curricula. I also recommend mentoring be recast and research training be restructured.
An investigation has been conducted of the mechanism by which methanol is synthesized from hydrogenation of CO$\sb2$ and CO$\sb2$/CO mixtures over a silica-supported copper catalyst. Using transient ...response methods, FTIR spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy, information regarding the role of the catalyst and the elementary surface processes is obtained. Quantitative infrared spectroscopy shows that CO adsorbs selectively on Cu with a heat of adsorption of 8.4 kcal/mol. Carbon dioxide adsorbs weakly on both Cu and SiO$\sb2$ with a heat of adsorption of 6.9 kcal/mol, and exhibits an infrared band at 2340 cm$\sp{-1}$ when adsorbed. On Cu, CO$\sb2$ adsorbs both molecularly and dissociatively (the extent of dissociation is about 20% at 303 K), and competes with CO for Cu sites. Several surface intermediates involved in the synthesis of methanol are characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy and temperature-programmed decomposition of methanol on Cu/SiO$\sb2.$ The intermediates include methanol, methoxy groups, formaldehyde, methylenebis(oxy) groups, and two distinct formate species. A scheme is proposed for methanol decomposition, based on the sequence of species observed during TPD-IR. The energetics of some of the elementary steps are obtained from simulations of the dynamics of the intermediates based on the postulated mechanism. During methanol synthesis from H$\sb2$/CO$\sb2$/CO/Ar reaction mixtures between 303-563 K and at pressures of 0.10-0.72 MPa, the only products observed are CO, H$\sb2$O, and CH$\sb3$OH. Selectivity to CH$\sb3$OH from CO$\sb2$ hydrogenation is only 1% at 0.10 MPa. Increasing the total pressure to 0.72 MPa and addition of CO to the feed improve methanol selectivity to 26% by inhibiting the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction and accelerating the rate of methanol synthesis through the bidentate formate intermediate. Infrared spectra reveal bidentate formate, monodentate formate, H$\sb2$O, CO, and two forms of carbonate on the Cu surface during hydrogenation of CO$\sb2.$ Small concentrations ($6\times10\sp{-5}$ of a Cu monolayer) of methanol and methoxy are also observed on the catalyst. Potassium promotion of Cu/SiO$\sb2$ accelerates the RWGS reaction while hindering methanol synthesis, decreasing the selectivity to 1% at 0.72 MPa during H$\sb2$/CO$\sb2$ reaction. A mechanism is proposed for CO$\sb2$ hydrogenation on Cu which accurately explains the effects of CO addition to the feed and potassium promotion of Cu.

Penal reform at 12 Calif prisons is reviewed & possible applications for the British system are discussed. In particular, the history & effect of & deviations from the determinate sentencing law ...reform of 1977, which rejected the rehabilitation model, are examined. Since the reform, rationale of imprisonment has shifted from punishment to incapacitation, with serious & often violent results. Politics, not justice, appears to control the system. J. Cannon.
