A technique has been developed which produces an experimental posterior perforating eye injury, that reproducibly results in traction retinal detachment. The standard injury is an incision through ...the pars plana with vitreous prolapse and incarceration; the wound is then carefully closed with microsurgical techniques. It appears that blood in the vitreous is an essential factor in the development of vitreous traction and of traction retinal detachment. The model is considered useful for further histological, electron microscopic, electrophysiological, and ultrasonic studies of posterior perforating eye injuries. In a controlled experiment, it will be possible to assess whether pars plana vitrectomy can interrupt the sequence of events leading to traction retinal detachment after posterior perforating injury.
Serial, bright-flash electroretinograms (ERGs) were recorded from rhesus monkey eyes before and after a standard posterior penetrating ocular injury and injection of 0.5 mL of blood into the ...vitreous. This procedure resulted in a progressive depression to virtual nonrecordability of the ERG during a period of several weeks, owing to a combined progressive increase in optical density and loss of retinal function. The ERG depression, however, was reversible, showing a remarkable recovery during the subsequent four to eight weeks. These findings suggest that in the presence of a recent, massive vitreous hemorrhage, a nonrecordable bright-flash ERG does not necessarily indicate a permanent loss of retinal function.
"The Loch Ness monster, that's what we've got," said Terry Hodder, an inshore fisherman from St. Bernard's who sailed to Paltry to see the creature for himself. John Lien, a Memorial University whale ...expert, could not tell positively from a photograph, but said the Fortune Bay carcass looks to be consistent with that of a decomposed whale. He doubts it's a basking shark, a less common species. "Alcoholism isn't being openly acknowledged for the problem that it is, in significant part because members of the leadership of northern communities (in Labrador) are themselves abusers of alcohol ...and are themselves in need of help," Brian Tobin said in an interview with the St. John's Telegram. The president of the Labrador Inuit Association (LIA) said he was not offended by Tobin's statement. It is a fact local residents are seeking "sober leadership" to cope with tragedies afflicting the community, William Barbour told CBC's Newsworld from Nain. Peter Penashue, leader of the Innu Nation, said Tobin's statements were too broad. He himself hasn't had a drink since August 1990.
OTTAWA - Brian Tobin, the Newfoundland Premier and potential successor to Jean Chretien, is facing heavy pressure from the Prime Minister and senior Liberal officials to run for the party in the ...upcoming federal election campaign, senior Liberal insiders say. Mr. Tobin was unavailable for comment yesterday, but insiders say he has not ruled out resigning as Premier to run for the Liberals. If Mr. Tobin should accept the offer, he would be rewarded a senior Cabinet portfolio. Provincial caucus sources said Mr. Tobin is preparing to run in the federal seat of Bonavista-Trinity-Conception in Newfoundland. The seat is currently held by Fred Mifflin, a Liberal, who is not expected to run again. A spokeswoman for Mr. Tobin denied the riding had been chosen.
The failure to have Joseph Fredrick McGrath examined by a psychiatrist was the second foul-up in the case. Last fall, when McGrath was released on probation, justice officials failed to warn the ...landlady of the single-family dwelling in St. John's where McGrath rented a basement apartment about his history. Her four- year-old daughter was molested in March. The delay in McGrath's sentencing has not endangered the public since McGrath is incarcerated at Her Majesty's Penitentiary, said the official who admitted that he was supposed to have called a psychiatrist to make McGrath an appointment.
