A measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions of the B(+) → K(+)μ(+)μ(-) and B(+) → K(+)e(+)e(-) decays is presented using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated ...luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1), recorded with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The value of the ratio of branching fractions for the dilepton invariant mass squared range 1 < q(2) < 6 GeV(2)/c(4) is measured to be 0.745(-0.074)(+0.090)(stat) ± 0.036(syst). This value is the most precise measurement of the ratio of branching fractions to date and is compatible with the standard model prediction within 2.6 standard deviations.
Observations of exotic structures in the J/ψp channel, which we refer to as charmonium-pentaquark states, in Λ_{b}^{0}→J/ψK^{-}p decays are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated ...luminosity of 3 fb^{-1} acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions. An amplitude analysis of the three-body final state reproduces the two-body mass and angular distributions. To obtain a satisfactory fit of the structures seen in the J/ψp mass spectrum, it is necessary to include two Breit-Wigner amplitudes that each describe a resonant state. The significance of each of these resonances is more than 9 standard deviations. One has a mass of 4380±8±29 MeV and a width of 205±18±86 MeV, while the second is narrower, with a mass of 4449.8±1.7±2.5 MeV and a width of 39±5±19 MeV. The preferred J^{P} assignments are of opposite parity, with one state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2.
Nest predation is the leading cause of reproductive mortality in oviparous tetrapods and can limit population growth in some species. Rates of nest predation could be influenced through modification ...of the cues used to find nests, but this requires a clear understanding of how nests are located. Here, we used a buffet-style choice experiment to test the relative role of three cue types (visual, tactile, and chemosensory) on the detection and depredation of Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina (L., 1758)) nests by a suite of predators dominated by raccoons (Procyon lotor (L., 1758)). We created sets of artificial nests along an authentic nesting site, presenting single or multiple cues. We interspersed artificial nests with authentic nests and monitored predation rates on both. Predators used all three cues to locate potential nests for investigation. However, nests with tactile cues were significantly more likely to be depredated than nests with only visual and chemosensory cues. Multiple cues had additive effects on predation probability. Addition of chemosensory cues to tactile treatments increased the probability of predation. The importance of tactile cues in this system supports the use of nest cages to protect nests in early stages of development, but cannot explain the recently described late-stage peak in predation.

from proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The isospin asymmetries are both consistent with the Standard Model expectations. The three measured branching fractions favour lower values than their respective theoretical predictions, however they are all individually consistent with the Standard Model.
The quantum numbers of the X(3872) meson are determined to be J(PC)=1(++) based on angular correlations in B(+)→X(3872)K(+) decays, where X(3872)→π(+)π(-)J/ψ and J/ψ→μ(+)μ(-). The data correspond to ...1.0 fb(-1) of pp collisions collected by the LHCb detector. The only alternative assignment allowed by previous measurements J(PC)=2(-+) is rejected with a confidence level equivalent to more than 8 Gaussian standard deviations using a likelihood-ratio test in the full angular phase space. This result favors exotic explanations of the X(3872) state.
The genetic events associated with the development and progression of head and neck squamous carcinoma (HNSC) are largely unknown. We analysed 12 matched pairs of histologically normal squamous ...mucosa and tumor specimens from six conventional and six phenotypic variants HNSC to define the differentially expressed genes in these tumors. Parallel expression analysis of 8055 unique genes was performed, and the level of the hybridization signal for each gene was measured after normalization. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the expressed genes showed distinct inter- and intra-tumoral patterns in and between conventional squamous carcinoma and squamous carcinoma variants. We also identified 26 (0.32%) differentially expressed genes that were consistently different between matched pairs of normal and tumor specimens; a selected set of the overexpressed genes was validated using real-time quantitative RT-PCR. The majority of the genes were associated with differentiation and proliferation. Our study defines a set of genes that could form the basis for the construction of limited HNSC targeted expression array and in-depth studies and further highlights gene profile differences that may be useful in pathobiologic classification of HNSC.
In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh interacts with three goddesses: Ninsun, his mother and a goddess renowned for her wisdom, Ishtar, the goddess of love and sexuality, and Siduri, a minor goddess of ...wisdom. This article will investigate Gilgamesh’s interactions and relations with these goddesses. How do these goddesses reveal or present themselves to Gilgamesh? How do the goddesses communicate with Gilgamesh, and how does he interact with them? The manner in which these interactions take place in the Standard Version of the Epic will be compared to the same episodes in the earlier Old Babylonian Version of the Epic and the Sumerian narratives in order to identify changes across time. Finally, how do these interactions differ from the way in which Gilgamesh interacts with male gods in the Epic of Gilgamesh? These various interactions will be compared and analysed to reveal not only similarities and differences in the way Gilgamesh communicates with the goddesses in the Epic of Gilgamesh, but also crucial differences in the manner in which male and female deities reveal themselves and communicate with Gilgamesh.
Abstract The deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flap is often used for mandibular reconstruction but it is bulky and causes additional donor-site morbidity because of the inclusion of an “obligatory ...internal oblique muscle”. Large composite segmental mandibular resections that consist of floor of mouth, subtotal tongue, and adjacent facial skin are a challenge in terms of reconstruction. They often require 2 free flaps or a free scapular flap and both have disadvantages. The deep circumflex iliac artery perforator (DCIAP) flap with a cutaneous component overcomes the disadvantages. We describe reconstructions with DCIAP flaps in 3 patients with large mandibular composite segmental defects. We report our experience of the flap and discuss some of the difficulties we encountered and the points we learned perioperatively.
To determine how many ameloblastomas were misdiagnosed as dentigerous cysts (DCs) by correlating the radiological and histopathological features of a series of both entities.
Histopathology reports ...and radiological imaging of 135 DCs and 43 ameloblastomas were reviewed. Any clinical or radiological feature that suggested that the diagnosis of DC was wrong-for example, absence of an unerupted tooth-prompted review of the original histology. A total of 34 cases coded as DC at diagnosis were excluded; in the remaining 101 patients, the clinicoradiological and histopathological features were consistent with DC in 96 (95.0%). Review of the histology revealed that 4 patients had actually had odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and one a luminal/simple unicystic ameloblastoma (UA). One other OKC and 3 other ameloblastomas (1 luminal UA, 2 solid/multicystic) had originally been diagnosed as DC; these had been identified prior to the study. Of the 9 misdiagnosed patients, 6 were ≤20 years old. Clinically, DC had been the only, or one of the differential, diagnoses in 7 patients; in the other 2, the clinical diagnosis was radicular cyst. In none of the 4 misdiagnosed ameloblastomas was the radiology compatible with a diagnosis of DC. Incorrect terminology had been used on the histopathology request form in 5 of the 34 excluded cases where the clinical diagnosis was DC, despite the cyst being periapical to an erupted carious or root-filled tooth.
The entire clinical team must ensure that a histopathological diagnosis of DC is consistent with the clinicoradiological scenario, particularly in younger patients.
