Seeking to get insight into the close relationship between plant waxes and the climatic conditions of plants’ original biomes, the leaves of three Myrtaceae from the eastern Australian-Tasmanian region (Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) K.D.Hill & L.A.S.Johnson (lemon-scented gum), Eucalyptus gunnii Hook. (cider gum), and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (blue gum)) were selected. The present study relied on the analysis of juvenile leaf samples of the three species collected at the Botanical Garden of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal) during the driest and warmest period of the year (July), to ensure the same environmental conditions as the Australian species from December to February, for cider gum and blue gum, and from June to September, for lemon-scented gum. Both surfaces of the leaves of the three Myrtaceae species exhibit superhydrophobic behavior. They are covered with wax tubules, but these are thicker and the surface is smoother in the case of cider gum. From the chemical standpoint, the leaf waxes of the three species revealed a prevalence of β-diketones and sterols over alcohols, alkanes, and esters. The relative ketone/sterol concentration ratio demonstrated an environmental dynamic variation with climate, i.e., with the ombrothermic regimes. The highest concentration of β-diketone and the lowest concentration of sterols was observed for species from dryer conditions (lemon-scented gum), whereas the reverse trend was found for species from wetter conditions (cider gum and blue gum).
The present work strongly suggests that the chemical composition of leaf waxes, rather than wettability, seems to be directly correlated with environmental variability at the species’ natural site. The methodology proposed here opens exciting new prospects for the investigation of the environmental dynamics of terrestrial plants.
Determining atomic positions in thin films by X‐ray diffraction is, at present, a task reserved for synchrotron facilities. Here an experimental method is presented which enables the determination of ...the structure factor amplitudes of thin films using laboratory‐based equipment (Cu Kα radiation). This method was tested using an epitaxial 130 nm film of CuMnAs grown on top of a GaAs substrate, which unlike the orthorhombic bulk phase forms a crystal structure with tetragonal symmetry. From the set of structure factor moduli obtained by applying this method, the solution and refinement of the crystal structure of the film has been possible. The results are supported by consistent high‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and stoichiometry analyses.
Cattle are a monotocous species, despite naturally conceived multiple births are sometimes observed. Although the number of twins has consistently increased, triplet and quadruplet pregnancies ...represent 0.015% and 0.004% of the total births, respectively. Multiple births are the result of multiple ovulation and/or the spontaneous cleavage of one fertilized oocyte, which is known as monozygotic (MZ) twinning. In cattle, approximately 5% to 14% of all twin births are MZ, and births with more than two MZ calves are extremely rare. Monozygotic animals are genetically identical, and those derived from two or more zygotes are genetically different. Furthermore, the presence of placental vascular anastomosis can result in foetal chimerism. Notwithstanding, animals born as single calves can be chimeras when one of the foetal twins dies undetected in utero. Here, we used DNA testing to study the zygotic condition of an unusual female quadruplet born from a Braford cow bred in a multi‐sire natural mating system without hormone stimulation. Two tissues with different embryological origin were sampled to test zygosity and possible chimerism. The results showed an identical genotype, confirming they all originated in an MZ pregnancy and suggesting the lack of chimerism in all animals. The use of MZ twins in breeding and selection systems provides an alternative to the conventional progeny testing. Some works have suggested a genetic background of MZ twins in humans. This female and her daughters could be the founders of a lineage to study the possible inheritance of MZ multiple births in cattle.
Different cardiac stem/progenitor cells have been recently identified in the post-natal heart. We describe here the identification, clonal expansion and characterization of self-renewing progenitors ...that differ from those previously described for high spontaneous cardiac differentiation. Unique coexpression of endothelial and pericyte markers identify these cells as cardiac mesoangioblasts and allow prospective isolation and clonal expansion from the juvenile mouse ventricle. Cardiac mesoangioblasts express many cardiac transcription factors and spontaneously differentiate into beating cardiomyocytes that assemble mature sarcomeres and express typical cardiac ion channels. Cells similarly isolated from the atrium do not spontaneously differentiate. When injected into the ventricle after coronary artery ligation, cardiac mesoangioblasts efficiently generate new myocardium in the peripheral area of the necrotic zone, as they do when grafted in the embryonic chick heart. These data identify cardiac mesoangioblasts as committed progenitors, downstream of earlier stem/progenitor cells and suitable for the cell therapy of a subset of juvenile cardiac diseases.
The sense of agency (SoA) is a multifaceted construct, which can be defined as the ability to understand the causal relationships between our actions and sensory events. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder ...(OCD) patients with checking compulsions often report a "lack of action completion" sensations, which has been conceptualized in the so-called "Not Just Right Experiences" construct. An intriguing explanation of this phenomenon comes from Belayachi and Van der Linden (2009, 2010), who suggest that OCD-checking patients are more prone to specify their action in a relatively molecular and inflexible way. Currently, there are no studies in literature which address this issue in OCD patients, except for the one of Gentsch et al. (2012), who suggested an altered SoA in these patients. Here we exploited a novel construct, gaze agency, to evaluate causal attribution capabilities in a group of 21 OCD patients (checkers) and matched healthy controls (HCs). Basically, two tasks targeted observers' capability to identify their own eye movements as the cause of concurrently presented beeps, which allowed us to measure agency sensitivity as well as subtle agency alterations in an ecological setting. We found a poorer performance in OCD patients as compared to HCs in many parameters of our tasks, suggesting a difficulty with causal attribution possibly due to both a reduced cognitive flexibility and a less functional gaze agency in OCD patients.
The probative value of animal forensic genetic evidence relies on laboratory accuracy and reliability. Inter-laboratory comparisons allow laboratories to evaluate their performance on specific tests ...and analyses and to continue to monitor their output. The International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) administered animal forensic comparison tests (AFCTs) in 2016 and 2018 to assess the limitations and capabilities of laboratories offering forensic identification, parentage and species determination services. The AFCTs revealed that analyses of low DNA template concentrations (≤300 pg/µL) constitute a significant challenge that has prevented many laboratories from reporting correct identification and parentage results. Moreover, a lack of familiarity with species testing protocols, interpretation guidelines and representative databases prevented over a quarter of the participating laboratories from submitting correct species determination results. Several laboratories showed improvement in their genotyping accuracy over time. However, the use of forensically validated standards, such as a standard forensic short tandem repeat (STR) kit, preferably with an allelic ladder, and stricter guidelines for STR typing, may have prevented some common issues from occurring, such as genotyping inaccuracies, missing data, elevated stutter products and loading errors. The AFCTs underscore the importance of conducting routine forensic comparison tests to allow laboratories to compare results from each other. Laboratories should keep improving their scientific and technical capabilities and continuously evaluate their personnel's proficiency in critical techniques such as low copy number (LCN) analysis and species testing. Although this is the first time that the ISAG has conducted comparison tests for forensic testing, findings from these AFCTs may serve as the foundation for continuous improvements of the overall quality of animal forensic genetic testing.
Purpose:
The aim of this study was to assess the performance measurements of the new PET/CT system Discovery-600 (D-600, GEMS, Milwaukee, WI).
Methods:
Performance measures were obtained with the ...National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) NU 2-2007 procedures.
Results:
The transverse (axial) spatial resolution FWHMs were 4.9 (5.6) mm and 5.6 (6.4) mm at 1 and 10 cm off axis, respectively. The sensitivity (average at 0 and 10 cm) was 9.6 cps/kBq. The scatter fraction was 36.6% (low energy threshold: 425 keV). The NEC peak rate

was 75.2 kcps at 12.9 kBq/cc. The hot contrasts for 10, 13, 17, and 22 mm spheres were 41%, 51%, 62%, and 73% and the cold contrasts for 28 and 37 mm spheres were 68% and 72%.
Conclusions:
The Discovery-600 has good performance for the NEMA NU 2-2007 parameters, particularly in improved sensitivity compared to the scanners of the same Discovery family, D-ST and D-STE.
In this paper we study the effect of financial constraints on innovation using data from a 2007 survey of more than 10,000 Chilean firms. In contrast with other surveys, this dataset allows for the ...construction of a direct indicator of constraints on credit for investment in innovation and sheds light on how these restrictions affect firm’s innovation outcomes heterogeneously. In our empirical approach, we deal with several econometric problems associated with the endogeneity of the credit constraint indicator and the binary nature of the innovation variable. We find that financial constraints are quantitatively important barriers for innovation in Chile. These constraints are particularly severe in the case of small firms and firms operating in the service sectors. We also find that these constraints are specific to innovation-related investments and particularly with regard to the accumulation of intangible assets.
The mechanisms of plasma post-oxidation of plasma nitrided AISI 1045 plain steel were investigated. The influence of plasma post-oxidation temperature and time on the oxide layer thickness, ...morphology, and composition were addressed. The oxide thickness grows exponentially with temperature, with activation energy of 68±5kJmol −1. The time dependence of the oxide layer thickness, on the other hand, is governed by a diffusion-reaction process. It was verified that temperature plays an important role on the morphology of the oxide. Indeed, at the highest temperature, 550°C, the oxide layer is not homogeneous and has a lower hardness than oxide layers obtained at 480 to 500°C. The latter seem to be more favorable temperatures to grow compact, homogeneous, and harder oxide layers. The oxide–nitride bi-layer produced here contains a mixture of γ′-Fe4N and ε-Fe2-3N and only one iron oxide, Fe3O4 (magnetite). The proportions between these phases vary with the plasma processing temperature and time.
