The Mu3e experiment aims to find or exclude the lepton flavour violating decay μ→eee at branching fractions above 10−16. A first phase of the experiment using an existing beamline at the Paul ...Scherrer Institute (PSI) is designed to reach a single event sensitivity of 2⋅10−15. We present an overview of all aspects of the technical design and expected performance of the phase I Mu3e detector. The high rate of up to 108 muon decays per second and the low momenta of the decay electrons and positrons pose a unique set of challenges, which we tackle using an ultra thin tracking detector based on high-voltage monolithic active pixel sensors combined with scintillating fibres and tiles for precise timing measurements.
In the present work of the PIENU experiment, heavy neutrinos were sought in pion decays π+→μ+ν at rest by examining the observed muon energy spectrum for extra peaks in addition to the expected peak ...for a light neutrino. No evidence for heavy neutrinos was observed. Upper limits were set on the neutrino mixing matrix |Uμi|2 in the neutrino mass region of 15.7–33.8 MeV/c2, improving on previous results by an order of magnitude.
A search for massive neutrinos has been made in the decay π+→e+ν. No evidence was found for extra peaks in the positron energy spectrum indicative of pion decays involving massive neutrinos (π→e+νh). ...Upper limits (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element |Uei|2 in the neutrino mass region 60–135 MeV/c2 were set and are an order of magnitude improvement over previous results.
Objectives In animal studies remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is a powerful tool to protect the heart from ischemia and reperfusion injury. Unfortunately, this effect is not consistently seen ...in recent large clinical trials. Aging was shown to be a confounding factor for the effect of direct preconditioning in experimental studies, but whether aging can also influence the effect of RIPC and thus being responsible for the contradictory clinical effect is unknown. Aim of this study was to investigate whether the cardioprotective effect of RIPC is abolished by aging. Design Randomized, prospective, blinded laboratory investigation. Setting Experimental laboratory Participants Male Wistar rats. Interventions Anesthetized young (Y, 2-3 months) and aged (A, 22-24 months) male Wistar rats were randomized to four groups (n=6 per group). Control animals (Y-Con and A-Con) were not treated further; RIPC groups (Y-RIPC and A-RIPC) received 4 cycles of 5 min bilateral hind limb ischemia interspersed with 5 min reperfusion before myocardial ischemia and reperfusion. All animals underwent 25 min of regional myocardial ischemia and 120 min reperfusion. At the end of reperfusion infarct size was determined by TTC staining. Measurements and Main Results In the control group of young rats infarct size was 56±9 % of the area at risk. RIPC reduced infarct size to 31±9 % (P<0.05 vs. Y-Con). Cardioprotection by RIPC was completely abolished in the aged rat heart (A-RIPC: 62±8 %, A-Con: 63±4 %; ns). Conclusions The results of our study show that cardioprotection induced by remote ischemic preconditioning is blocked in the aged rat heart.
A new measurement of the branching ratio R_{e/μ}=Γ(π^{+}→e^{+}ν+π^{+}→e^{+}νγ)/Γ(π^{+}→μ^{+}ν+π^{+}→μ^{+}νγ) resulted in R_{e/μ}^{exp}=1.2344±0.0023(stat)±0.0019(syst)×10^{-4}. This is in agreement ...with the standard model prediction and improves the test of electron-muon universality to the level of 0.1%.
We describe a fully GPU-based implementation of the first level trigger for the upgrade of the LHCb detector, due to start data taking in 2021. We demonstrate that our implementation, named Allen, ...can process the 40 Tbit/s data rate of the upgraded LHCb detector and perform a wide variety of pattern recognition tasks. These include finding the trajectories of charged particles, finding proton–proton collision points, identifying particles as hadrons or muons, and finding the displaced decay vertices of long-lived particles. We further demonstrate that Allen can be implemented in around 500 scientific or consumer GPU cards, that it is not I/O bound, and can be operated at the full LHC collision rate of 30 MHz. Allen is the first complete high-throughput GPU trigger proposed for a HEP experiment.
The three body pion decays ... where X is a weakly interacting neutral boson, were searched for using the full data set from the PIENU experiment. An improved limit on ... in the mass range ... and a ...first result for ... in the region ... were obtained. Charged lepton flavor violating muon decay μ+ → e+XH, where XH is a massive neutral boson, was sought by searching for extra peaks in the muon decay μ+ → e+ν¯ν energy spectrum in the mXH mass region ...47.8–95.1 MeV/c2. No signal was found and 90% confidence level upper limits were set on the branching ratio Γ(μ+ → e+XH)/Γ(μ+ → e+ν¯ν) at the level of 10−5 for this region.
