Employees' working relationships were long determined to be crucial to their overall wellbeing and performance ratings at work. However, a few studies were found to examine the effects of positive ...workplace relationships on employees' working manners. This study aimed to investigate the effects of healthy workplace relationships on employees' working behaviors, which in turn affect their performance. In doing so, an integrated model was developed to examine the primary performance drivers of nurses in Vietnamese hospitals and focus on the effects of high-quality workplace relationships on the working attitudes of the staff. This study analyzed a questionnaire survey of 303 hospital nurses using a structural equation modeling approach. The findings demonstrated the positive effects of high-quality workplace relationships on working manners including higher commitment, lower level of reported job stress, and increased perception of social impact. Notably, the results also demonstrated that relationships between leaders and their staff nurses make a significant contribution to the quality of workplace relationship and nurses' performance. In addition, the social impact was illustrated to positively moderate the association between healthy workplace interactions and job stress; however, it had no significant effect on job commitment. Unfortunately, job commitment was surprisingly found to not be related to performance ratings. This paper provides some suggestions for the divergence of performance drivers in the hospital context in Vietnam.
The significant influence of thermal acclimation on physiological and behavioral performance has been documented in many ectothermic animals, but such studies are still limited in turtle species. We ...acclimated hatchling soft-shelled turtles Pelodiscus sinensis under three thermal conditions (10, 20 and 30~C) for 4 weeks, and then measured selected body temperature (Tsel), critical thermal minimum (CTMin) and maximum (CTM~x), and locomotor performance at different body temperatures. Thermal acclimation significantly affected thermal preference and resistance of P sinensis hatchlings. Hatchling turtles accli- mated to 10~C selected relatively lower body temperatures and were less resistant to high temperatures than those acclimated to 20~C and 30~C. The turtles' resistance to low temperatures increased with a decreasing acclimation temperature. The thermal re- sistance range (i.e. the difference between CTM~x and CTMin, TRR) was widest in turtles acclimated to 20~C, and narrowest in those acclimated to 10~C. The locomotor performance of turtles was affected by both body temperature and acclimation tem- perature. Hatchling turtles acclimated to relatively higher temperatures swam faster than did those acclimated to lower temperatures. Accordingly, hatchling turtles acclimated to a particular temperature may not enhance the performance at that temperature. Instead, hatchlings acclimated to relatively warm temperatures have a better performance, supporting the "hotter is better" hypothesis.
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal types of human cancer worldwide. In the present study, we investigated the diagnostic and biological significance of microRNA-194 ...(miR-194) in PDAC. miRNA expression profiling of human PDACs and adjacent normal pancreatic tissues identified a total of 16 genes including miR-194 with >1.15-fold expression changes (8 overexpressed and 8 underexpressed). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed elevation of serum miR-194 levels were significantly greater in PDAC patients than in duodenal adenocarcinoma patients and healthy controls. Receiver operating characteristic analysis demonstrated that serum miR-194 had a sensitivity of 54.3% and a specificity of 57.5% for discriminating PDAC patients from healthy controls. Combined analysis of the 3 groups yielded a sensitivity of 84.0 and a specificity of 75.0% for the combined detection of miR-192 and miR-194 in the diagnosis of PDAC. Ectopic expression of miR-194 in PANC-1 pancreatic cancer cells enhanced cell proliferation, migration and colony formation, which was coupled with decreased expression of the tumor suppressor DACH1. miR-194 overexpression increased tumor growth and local invasion and suppressed the expression of DACH1 in an orthotopic pancreatic cancer mouse model. In conclusion, upregulation of miR-194 contributes to tumor growth and progression in PDAC, possibly through suppression of DACH1. However, serum miR-194 has a low capacity for detection of PDAC. Combined detection of serum miR-192 and miR-194 levels may serve as a sensitive diagnostic biomarker for PDAC.
The Vietnamese government has long recognized the essential importance of innovation in fostering sustainable competitive advantage and economic growth. While transitional countries have experienced ...limited research on SOEs and firm innovation, our research makes an initial effort to examine the impact of state ownership on innovation in Vietnam's emerging market using extensive panel data of firms listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange from 2007 to 2016. The study integrates the institutional view, which regards that SOEs' political and financial favoritism would connect firms to overcome constraints; and agency theory, which holds that SOEs would be less efficient in leveraging these critical resources in pursuing innovative projects. Our study demonstrates that innovation practices occur less often with the increased government involvement in a corporate structure. Our findings are attributable to the inherent problems of state-owned firms and suggest implications for managers and policymakers regarding the benefits and costs of state ownership in fostering innovation in the context of the socialist-oriented market economy of Vietnam.
In its transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy, Vietnam has achieved remarkable success. During this transition, Vietnam businesses have implemented a number of HRM practices ...used primarily by companies in Western cultures. This study specifically investigates the impact of three HRM practices: training, performance appraisal systems and incentive pay, on firm performance to determine if results mirror those obtained in the more highly developed economies of the West. A sample of 200 Hanoi manufacturing SMEs was surveyed regarding their practices in these areas. The result provides empirical support that training, performance appraisal and incentive compensation have positive effects on Vietnamese SME performance, with incentive compensation having the greatest impact.
It is well accepted in the myotonic dystrophy (DM) community that myotonia can place a substantial burden on daily life for people with DM1 or DM2. However, the negative impact of DM is poorly ...quantified, and there is little patient-reported information about the contribution of myotonia to the daily burden of DM. ENSA is a patient-reported, international, online survey conducted in 2023 to investigate the impact of myotonia on daily life in people with DM. Adults (≥18 years) with DM1 or DM2 in Europe, the UK or North America complete the ENSA anonymised survey, publicized via an outreach campaign. ENSA includes 32 questions on self-reported descriptions of DM symptom onset, time to medical consultation, myotonia frequency/location, muscle weakness, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, gastrointestinal/cardiorespiratory symptoms, disease management, treatment, and impact of DM on daily life. Preliminary analyses of data collected until April 12, 2023, revealed that 169 DM patients (or their representatives) in 10 countries had completed the ENSA survey to date. The mean (range) age of respondents was 45.6 (11–77) years; n=89 (53% were female; n=157 (93%) had DM1. Myotonia was reported by 156 (92%) patients: 130 (77%) currently had myotonia and 26 (15%) had experienced myotonia in the past; 13 (8%) had never experienced myotonia. Of those with myotonia currently, 67/130 (52%) were not receiving any drug treatment for this symptom. Updated data will be presented. In summary, here we present methodology and preliminary data from ENSA. The overall findings of ENSA dataset will aim to help quantify the impact of myotonia on DM1 and DM2 patients’ daily lives. They also aim to increase awareness and understanding of the ongoing need for effective management of this debilitating symptom. Zozulya-Weidenfeller is employed by Lupin. This paper aims to propose a Comprehensive Decision Support Model to evaluate retail companies' financial performance traded on the Vietnam Stock Exchange Market. The financial performance has been ...examined in terms of the valuations ratios, profitability ratios, growth rates, liquidity ratios, efficiency ratios, and leverage ratios. The data of twelve companies from the first quarter to the fourth quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020 were employed. The weights of 18 chosen financial ratios are calculated by using the Standard Deviation method (SD). Grey Relational Analysis technique was applied to obtain the final ranking of each company in each quarter. The results showed that leverage ratios have the most significant impact on the retail companies' financial performance and gives some long-term investment recommendations for stakeholders and indicated that the Taseco Air Services Joint Stock Company (AST), Mobile World Investment Corporation (MWG), and Cam Ranh International Airport Services Joint Stock Company (CIA) are three of the top efficient companies. The three of the worst companies are Viglacera Corporation (VGC), Saigon General Service Corporation (SVC), and HocMon Trade Joint Stock Company (HTC). Furthermore, this study suggests that the GRA model could be implemented effectively to ranking companies of other industries in the future research.
Real estate markets play an essential role in the economic development of both developed and developing countries. Investment decisions in private real estate demand the consideration of several ...qualitative and quantitative criteria. Especially in Vietnam, demand for housing, apartments are rising which has resulted because of the migration from rural to urban areas. This study aims to determine the influencing factors of the real estate purchasing behavior and then recommend a grey Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) support model to evaluate real estate alternatives based on a numerical example in Vietnam. A set of essential criteria are identified based on experts' opinion, and the proposed determinants are initial investment, maintenance cost, prestige location, distance to interesting places, parking lot, public transportation, property condition, total area size, number of rooms, and neighbors. The subjective weights were obtained by using the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) model, and the Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) technique is employed to prioritize and rank real estate alternatives. The results reveal that this approach can be useful to make purchasing decisions for many kinds of real estate property under uncertain business environments. These findings indicate that the presented hybrid model has advantages in granting flexibility to the preferences of decision makers.
