In order to enable long-distance transportation and ensure that the fruit presents the requisite quality on arrival at markets, the cherry industry for direct consumption needs to prolong ...post-harvest shelf life. Sweet cherries are highly perishable, non-climacteric fruits with shelf life of 7-14 days in cold storage. Their shelf life is shortened by loss of firmness, color and flavor, stem discoloration, desiccation and mould growth. Various factors such as harvest time, proper handling and cooling practices and above all packaging, greatly influence the shelf life of cherries. One of the areas of research that has shown promise, and had success, is modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). It is one of the fastest growing packaging technologies and has many advantages for different food products. Properly designed modified atmosphere packs can be exploited to lower respiration rates and thus ripening of fruits which results in least changes in physiochemical parameters of sweet cherries during postharvest storage. This paper intended to review a broad spectrum of studies dealt with the use of MAP for preservation of sweet cherries cultivars with an interest for future research work.
In the present study, SnS and Cr-doped SnS nanoparticles were synthesized by solvothermal method. The structural, functional, elemental, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the ...as-synthesized non-doped and Cr-doped SnS nanoparticles were examined using XRD, Raman, FTIR, SEM/EDX, and cyclic voltammetry analysis. The XRD results indicated a good crystallinity of the sample and confirmed the formation of the SnS nanoparticles in orthorhombic structure. The FTIR result also confirmed the functional groups present in the Cr-doped SnS nanoparticles. The well-formed SnS nanoparticles are observed as spherical shapes confirmed from the SEM analysis. EDX spectra confirmed the presence of Sn, Cr, and S elements in the Cr-doped SnS nanoparticles. The electrochemical performance of Cr-doped SnS nanoparticles shows higher specific capacitance of 375 F/g compared with 284 F/g of bare SnS nanoparticles, which confirms that Cr-doped SnS nanoparticles are promising candidate for supercapacitor applications.

We report here the fabrication of a robust, highly sensitive, reliable and reproducible phenyl hydrazine chemical sensor using Ag-doped ZnO nanoflowers as efficient electron mediators. The Ag-doped ZnO nanoflowers were synthesized by facile hydrothermal process at low-temperature and characterized in detail in terms of their morphological, structural, compositional and optical properties. The detailed morphological and structural characterizations revealed that the synthesized nanostructures were flower-shaped, grown in very high-density, and possessed well-crystalline structure. The chemical composition confirmed the presence of Ag into the lattices of Ag-doped ZnO nanoflowers. High sensitivity of ∼557.108±0.012mAcm−2(molL−1)−1 and detection limit of ∼5×10−9molL−1 with correlation coefficient (R) of 0.97712 and short response time (10.0s) were observed for the fabricated chemical sensor towards the detection of phenyl hydrazine by using a simple current–voltage (I–V) technique. Due to high sensitivity and low-detection limit, it can be concluded that Ag-doped ZnO nanoflowers could be an effective candidate for the fabrication of phenyl hydrazine chemical sensors.
In the present era, food scientists are concerned about exploiting functional crops with nutraceutical properties. Buckwheat is one of the functional pseudocereals with nutraceutical components used ...in the treatment of health‐related diseases, malnutrition, and celiac diseases. As a preferred diet as a gluten‐free product for celiac diseases, buckwheat is a good source of nutrients, bioactive components, phytochemicals, and antioxidants. The general characteristics and better nutritional profile of buckwheat than other cereal family crops were highlighted by previous investigations. In buckwheats, bioactive components like peptides, flavonoids, phenolic acids, d‐fagomine, fagopyritols, and fagopyrins are posing significant health benefits. This study highlights the current knowledge about buckwheat and its characteristics, nutritional constituents, bioactive components, and their potential for developing gluten‐free products to target celiac people (1.4% of the world population) and other health‐related diseases.
Buckwheat is one of the functional pseudocereals with nutraceutical components to target health‐related diseases, malnutrition, and celiac. In recent years, buckwheat‐related food products with good sensory and techno‐functional qualities attractive the food market with health benefits and suitable food for people with gluten intolerance. Incorporating buckwheat in product formulation would help mitigate various health‐related problems and gluten‐free products with nutrient‐dense ingredients.
Several studies have suggested an association between poor oral health and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We conducted a case-control study in Kashmir, a region with relatively high ...incidence of ESCC in north India, to investigate the association between oral hygiene and ESCC risk.
We recruited 703 histologically confirmed ESCC cases, and 1664 controls individually matched to the cases for age, sex, and district of residence. Conditional logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
We found an inverse association between teeth cleaning and ESCC risk. As compared with never cleaning teeth, the OR (95% CI) was 0.41 (0.28-0.62) for cleaning less than daily and 0.44 (0.25-0.77) for cleaning at least once a day (P for trend=0.026) in models adjusted for multiple potential confounders, including several indicators of socioeconomic status. This association persisted after we limited our analyses to never tobacco users. The inverse association between cleaning teeth and ESCC was stronger with using brushes than with using sticks/fingers. We also found an association between the number of decayed, filled, and missing teeth and ESCC risk, but the trend of the associations was not statistically significant. Avoiding solid food and cold beverages because of teeth and oral problems were also associated with ESCC risk.
We found an association between poor oral hygiene indicators and ESCC risk, supporting the previous studies that showed the same associations.
Although cigarette smoking is an established risk factor for oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), there is little information about the association between other smoking and smokeless tobacco ...products, including hookah and nass, and ESCC risk. We conducted a case-control study in Kashmir Valley, India, where hookah smoking, nass chewing, and ESCC are common, to investigate the association of hookah smoking, nass use, and several other habits with ESCC.
We recruited 702 histologically confirmed ESCC cases and 1663 hospital-based controls, individually matched to the cases for age, sex, and district of residence from September 2008 to January 2012. Conditional logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs).
Ever-hookah smoking (OR=1.85; 95% CI, 1.41-2.44) and nass chewing (OR=2.88; 95% CI, 2.06-4.04) were associated with ESCC risk. These associations were consistent across different measures of use, including intensity, duration, and cumulative amount of use, and after excluding ever users of the other product and cigarette smokers. Our results also suggest an increased risk of ESCC associated with ever-gutka chewing and -bidi smoking. However, the latter associations were based on small number of participants.
This study shows that hookah and nass use are associated with ESCC risk. As prevalence of hookah use seems to be increasing among young people worldwide, these results may have relevance not only for the regions in which hookah use has been a traditional habit, but also for other regions, including western countries.
Tibial bicondylar fractures are difficult fractures to treat and are usually associated with complications.
Thirty-five patients with Schatzker type V and VI fractures were managed from June 2016 to ...July 2018 with Ilizarov technique. The mean age of the patients was 46.5 ± 8.9 years, with 28 male and seven female patients. Sixteen patients had Schatzker type V fracture and the remaining had type VI. The functional outcome was assessed by using Modified functional evaluation system by Karlstrom - Olerud and the radiological outcome by Rasmussen's Radiological Score (RRS).
All patients achieved radiological union at a mean duration of 16 weeks for type 5 and 17 weeks for type 6 however, full weight-bearing was allowed at a mean of 18 weeks (14 - 22 weeks). Functional results were excellent in 24 cases, good in 10 and poor in one. Most patients achieved functional range of motion at the knee joint (average flexion 1280) except one, who had a flexion of less than 1100. One patient with a delayed union united after bone marrow injection. Other complications included pin tract infections in 9 cases, axial malalignment of less than 10
in 4 cases and a prominent screw in one.
Percutaneous restoration of articular anatomy and a ring external fixation with or without minimal internal fixation is an excellent method of treatment in this group of fractures caused by high energy trauma and with a usual association of severe comminution and a poor soft tissue envelope.

This paper reports a very simple, reliable and facile methodology to fabricate ultra-high sensitive liquid ammonia chemical sensor using well-crystalline hexagonal-shaped ZnO nanopencils as an efficient electron mediator. A low-temperature facile hydrothermal technique was used to synthesize ZnO nanopencils. The synthesized nanopencils were characterized in detail in terms of their morphological, structural and optical properties which confirmed that the synthesized nanomaterial is well-crystalline, possessing wurtzite hexagonal phase and possess very good optical properties. A very high sensitivity of ∼26.58μAcm−2mM−1 and detection limit of ∼5nM with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.9965 and a response time of less than 10s were observed for the fabricated liquid ammonia by I–V technique. To the best of our knowledge, by comparing the literature, it is confirmed that the fabricated sensor based on ZnO nanopencils exhibits highest sensitivity and lowest detection limit for liquid ammonia. This research opens a way that simply synthesized nanomaterials could be used as efficient electron mediators for the fabrication of efficient liquid ammonia chemical sensors.
Growing human population is a solemn risk to biodiversity at a global level. Massive anthropogenic pressure and invasion in the natural habitats initiated the human-wildlife conflict in rural areas. ...Present study aimed to assess human-wildlife conflict in Musk Deer National Park (MDNP) from 2013 to 2018. Results revealed an estimated 241784 nomadic and 5589 residential livestock heads grazed in different areas of MDNP during the summer season. A total of 126 heads were depredated by carnivores during the study period. Majority (n=39) of livestock heads were killed in May (n=29). Livestock depredation resulted in economic losses worth 3.115 million PKRs (25744 US$) to the herder community while farmers received 1.629 million PKRs (13466 US$) losses due to crop raiding. Most (64%) of the respondents believed human-wildlife conflict heightened due to scarcity of food or prey in the natural habitats of carnivores. Majority (92%) of the respondents did not like the presence of predators in MDNP. Loss compensation schemes could turn this negative attitude into the positive one and increase tolerance about the presence of carnivores in their vicinity. This study provides an insight into the human-wildlife conflict in MDNP and paves a way for understanding the conflict and conservation of carnivore species in the study area.
