Abstract concepts differ from concrete concepts in several ways. Here, we focus on what we refer to as situational systematicity: The objects and relations that constitute an abstract concept (e.g., ...justice) are more dispersed through space and time than are those that typically constitute a concrete concept (e.g., chair); a larger set of objects and relations constitute an abstract concept than a concrete one; and exactly which objects and relations constitute a concept is more context-dependent for abstract concepts. We thus refer to abstract concepts as having low situational systematicity. We contend that situational systematicity, rather than abstractness per se, is a critical determinant of the cognitive, behavioural, and neural phenomena associated with concepts. Further, viewing concepts as schema provides insight into (i) the situation-based dynamics of concept learning and representation and (ii) the functional significance of the brain regions and their interactions that comprise the schema control network.
Abstract Deployment of stent-grafts, derived from synthetic biomaterials, is an established minimally invasive approach for effectively treating abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). However, a notable ...disadvantage associated with this surgical technique is migration of the deployed stent-graft due to poor biocompatibility and inadequate integration in vivo. Recently, tissue-engineered extracellular matrices (ECMs) have shown early promise as integrating stabilisation collars in this setting due to their ability to induce a constructive tissue remodelling response after in vivo implantation. In the present study the effects of stent loading on an ECM׳s mechanical properties were investigated by characterising the compression and loading effects of endovascular stents on porcine urinary bladder matrix (UBM) scaffolds. Results demonstrated that the maximum stress was induced when the stent force was 8-times higher than a standard commercially available stent-graft and this represented about 20% of the failure strength of the UBM material. In addition, the influence of stent shape was also investigated. Findings demonstrated that the stress induced was higher for circular stents at low forces and a higher stress was induced on square stents when increased force was applied. Our findings demonstrate that porcine UBM possesses sufficient mechanical strength to withstand the compression and loading effects of commercially available stent-grafts in the setting of endovascular aneurysm repair.
Aims/hypothesis Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of dementia but the reasons for this association are unclear because there are many potential mechanisms. We explored the relative ...contribution of diabetes-related variables as predictors of dementia in older individuals with diabetes. Methods Survivors, aged >=70 or more, were recruited from an existing observational cohort study 7.6 ± 1.0 years after baseline, when they underwent a comprehensive assessment of diabetes, complications and cardiovascular risk factors. Dementia, probable Alzheimer's disease and cognitive impairment without dementia were diagnosed clinically. Logistic regression modelling determined independent predictors of cognitive diagnoses. Results Of 302 participants, aged 75.7 ± 4.6 years, 28 (9.3%) had dementia (16 with probable Alzheimer's disease) and 60 (19.9%) had cognitive impairment without dementia. The major independent longitudinal predictors of dementia were older age (per decade; odds ratio 4.0, 95% CI 1.59-10.10), diabetes duration (for each 5 years; odds ratio 1.69, 95% CI 1.24-2.32), peripheral arterial disease (odds ratio 5.35, 95% CI 2.08-13.72) and exercise (which was protective; odds ratio 0.26, 95% CI 0.09-0.73). For Alzheimer's disease, diabetes duration was an independent predictor in addition to age and diastolic blood pressure. The results of the cross-sectional analyses were similar with respect to diabetes duration and peripheral arterial disease. Conclusions/interpretation Peripheral arterial disease is a strong independent risk factor for dementia in diabetes. After adjustment for a wide range of potential risk factors, diabetes duration remains independently associated with dementia and probable Alzheimer's disease, indicating that factors not measured in this study may be important in the pathogenesis of dementia in diabetes.
Summary Background Laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy is often associated with visual field reduction and other ocular side-effects. Our aim was to assess whether long-term lipid-lowering ...therapy with fenofibrate could reduce the progression of retinopathy and the need for laser treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods The Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes (FIELD) study was a multinational randomised trial of 9795 patients aged 50–75 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to receive fenofibrate 200 mg/day (n=4895) or matching placebo (n=4900). At each clinic visit, information concerning laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy—a prespecified tertiary endpoint of the main study—was gathered. Adjudication by ophthalmologists masked to treatment allocation defined instances of laser treatment for macular oedema, proliferative retinopathy, or other eye conditions. In a substudy of 1012 patients, standardised retinal photography was done and photographs graded with Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) criteria to determine the cumulative incidence of diabetic retinopathy and its component lesions. Analyses were by intention to treat. This study is registered as an International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial, number ISRCTN64783481. Findings Laser treatment was needed more frequently in participants with poorer glycaemic or blood pressure control than in those with good control of these factors, and in those with a greater burden of clinical microvascular disease, but the need for such treatment was not affected by plasma lipid concentrations. The requirement for first laser treatment for all retinopathy was significantly lower in the fenofibrate group than in the placebo group (164 3·4% patients on fenofibrate vs 238 4·9% on placebo; hazard ratio HR 0·69, 95% CI 0·56–0·84; p=0·0002; absolute risk reduction 1·5% 0·7–2·3). In the ophthalmology substudy, the primary endpoint of 2-step progression of retinopathy grade did not differ significantly between the two groups overall (46 9·6% patients on fenofibrate vs 57 12·3% on placebo; p=0·19) or in the subset of patients without pre-existing retinopathy (43 11·4% vs 43 11·7%; p=0·87). By contrast, in patients with pre-existing retinopathy, significantly fewer patients on fenofibrate had a 2-step progression than did those on placebo (three 3·1% patients vs 14 14·6%; p=0·004). An exploratory composite endpoint of 2-step progression of retinopathy grade, macular oedema, or laser treatments was significantly lower in the fenofibrate group than in the placebo group (HR 0·66, 95% CI 0·47–0·94; p=0·022). Interpretation Treatment with fenofibrate in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus reduces the need for laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy, although the mechanism of this effect does not seem to be related to plasma concentrations of lipids.
Under a theory of event representations that defines events as dynamic changes in objects across both time and space, as in the proposal of Intersecting Object Histories (Altmann & Ekves, 2019), the ...encoding of changes in state is a fundamental first step in building richer representations of events. In other words, there is an inherent dynamic that is captured by our knowledge of events. In the present study, we evaluated the degree to which this dynamic was inferable from just the linguistic signal, without access to visual, sensory, and embodied experience, using recurrent neural networks (RNNs). Recent literature exploring RNNs has largely focused on syntactic and semantic knowledge. We extend this domain of investigation to representations of events within RNNs. In three studies, we find preliminary evidence that RNNs capture, in their internal representations, the extent to which objects change states; for example, that chopping an onion changes the onion by more than just peeling the onion. Moreover, the temporal relationship between state changes is encoded to some extent. We found RNNs are sensitive to how chopping an onion and then weighing it, or first weighing it, entails the onion that is being weighed being in a different state depending on the adverb. Our final study explored what factors influence the propagation of these rudimentary event representations forward into subsequent sentences. We conclude that while there is much still to be learned about the abilities of RNNs (especially in respect of the extent to which they encode objects as specific tokens), we still do not know what are the equivalent representational dynamics in humans. That is, we take the perspective that the exploration of computational models points us to important questions about the nature of the human mind.
We present griz light curves of 251 SNe Ia from the first 3 years of the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program's (DES-SN) spectroscopically classified sample. The photometric pipeline described in ...this paper produces the calibrated fluxes and associated uncertainties used in the cosmological parameter analysis by employing a scene modeling approach that simultaneously models a variable transient flux and temporally constant host galaxy. We inject artificial point sources onto DECam images to test the accuracy of our photometric method. Upon comparison of input and measured artificial supernova fluxes, we find that flux biases peak at 3 mmag. We require corrections to our photometric uncertainties as a function of host galaxy surface brightness at the transient location, similar to that seen by the DES Difference Imaging Pipeline used to discover transients. We describe catalog-level simulations of Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) light curves in the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN), and in low-redshift samples from the Center for Astrophysics ...(CfA) and the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP). These simulations are used to model biases from selection effects and light curve analysis, and to determine bias corrections for SN Ia distance moduli that are used to measure cosmological parameters. To generate realistic light curves the simulation uses a detailed SN Ia model, incorporates information from observations (PSF, sky noise, zero point), and uses summary information (e.g., detection efficiency vs. signal to noise ratio) based on 10,000 fake SN light curves whose fluxes were overlaid on images and processed with our analysis pipelines. The quality of the simulation is illustrated by predicting distributions observed in the data. Averaging within redshift bins, we find distance modulus biases up to 0.05 mag over the redshift ranges of the low-z and DES-SN samples. For individual events, particularly those with extreme red or blue color, distance biases can reach 0.4 mag. Therefore, accurately determining bias corrections is critical for precision measurements of cosmological parameters. We present the analysis underpinning the measurement of cosmological parameters from 207 spectroscopically classified SNe Ia from the first 3 years of the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program ...(DES-SN), spanning a redshift range of 0.017 < z < 0.849. We combine the DES-SN sample with an external sample of 122 low-redshift (z < 0.1) SNe Ia, resulting in a "DES-SN3YR" sample of 329 SNe Ia. Our cosmological analyses are blinded: after combining our DES-SN3YR distances with constraints from the Cosmic Microwave Background, our uncertainties in the measurement of the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, w, are 0.042 (stat) and 0.059 (stat+syst) at 68% confidence. We provide a detailed systematic uncertainty budget, which has nearly equal contributions from photometric calibration, astrophysical bias corrections, and instrumental bias corrections. We also include several new sources of systematic uncertainty. While our sample is less than one-third the size of the Pantheon sample, our constraints on w are only larger by 1.4×, showing the impact of the DES-SN Ia light-curve quality. We find that the traditional stretch and color standardization parameters of the DES-SNe Ia are in agreement with earlier SN Ia samples such as Pan-STARRS1 and the Supernova Legacy Survey. However, we find smaller intrinsic scatter about the Hubble diagram (0.077 mag). Interestingly, we find no evidence for a Hubble residual step (0.007 0.018 mag) as a function of host-galaxy mass for the DES subset, in 2.4 tension with previous measurements. We also present novel validation methods of our sample using simulated SNe Ia inserted in DECam images and using large catalog-level simulations to test for biases in our analysis pipelines.
We present angular diameter measurements obtained by measuring the position of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in an optimized sample of galaxies from the first three years of Dark Energy Survey ...data (DES Y3). The sample consists of 7 million galaxies distributed over a footprint of 4100 deg2 with 0.6<zphoto<1.1 and a typical redshift uncertainty of 0.03(1+z). The sample selection is the same as in the BAO measurement with the first year of DES data, but the analysis presented here uses three times the area, extends to higher redshift, and makes a number of improvements, including a fully analytical BAO template, the use of covariances from both theory and simulations, and an extensive preunblinding protocol. We used two different statistics; angular correlation function and power spectrum, and validate our pipeline with an ensemble of over 1500 realistic simulations. Both statistics yield compatible results. We combine the likelihoods derived from angular correlations and spherical harmonics to constrain the ratio of comoving angular diameter distance DM at the effective redshift of our sample to the sound horizon scale at the drag epoch. We obtain DM(zeff=0.835)/rd=18.92±0.51, which is consistent with, but smaller than, the Planck prediction assuming flat ΛCDM, at the level of 2.3σ. The analysis was performed blind and is robust to changes in a number of analysis choices. It represents the most precise BAO distance measurement from imaging data to date, and is competitive with the latest transverse ones from spectroscopic samples at z>0.75. When combined with DES 3x2pt+SNIa, they lead to improvements in H0 and Ωm constraints by ∼20%.
Abstract
A major challenge in modeling the circulation over coral reefs is uncertainty in the drag coefficient because existing estimates span two orders of magnitude. Current and pressure ...measurements from five coral reefs are used to estimate drag coefficients based on depth-average flow, assuming a balance between the cross-reef pressure gradient and the bottom stress. At two sites wind stress is a significant term in the cross-reef momentum balance and is included in estimating the drag coefficient. For the five coral reef sites and a previous laboratory study, estimated drag coefficients increase as the water depth decreases consistent with open channel flow theory. For example, for a typical coral reef hydrodynamic roughness of 5 cm, observational estimates, and the theory indicate that the drag coefficient decreases from 0.4 in 20 cm of water to 0.005 in 10 m of water. Synthesis of results from the new field observations with estimates from previous field and laboratory studies indicate that coral reef drag coefficients range from 0.2 to 0.005 and hydrodynamic roughnesses generally range from 2 to 8 cm. While coral reef drag coefficients depend on factors such as physical roughness and surface waves, a substantial fraction of the scatter in estimates of coral reef drag coefficients is due to variations in water depth.
