The concept that superconductivity competes with other orders in cuprate superconductors has become increasingly apparent, but obtaining direct evidence with bulk-sensitive probes is challenging. We ...have used resonant soft x-ray scattering to identify two-dimensional charge fluctuations with an incommensurate periodicity of ∼3.2 lattice units in the copper-oxide planes of the superconductors (Y,Nd)Ba 2 Cu 3 O 6+x , with hole concentrations of 0.09 to 0.13 per planar Cu ion. The intensity and correlation length of the fluctuation signal increase strongly upon cooling down to the superconducting transition temperature (T c ); further cooling below T c abruptly reverses the divergence of the charge correlations. In combination with earlier observations of a large gap in the spin excitation spectrum, these data indicate an incipient charge density wave instability that competes with superconductivity.

In a broad class of gravity theories, the equations of motion for vacuum compactifications give a curvature bound on the Ricci tensor minus a multiple of the Hessian of the warping ...function. Using results in so-called Bakry-Émery geometry, we put rigorous general bounds on the KK scale in gravity compactifications in terms of the reduced Planck mass or the internal diameter. We reexamine in this light the local behavior in type IIA for the class of supersymmetric solutions most promising for scale separation. We find that the local O6-plane behavior cannot be smoothed out as in other local examples; it generically turns into a formal partially smeared O4.
In the present paper, an improved multiscale modeling aimed at describing membrane fouling in the UltraFiltration (UF) process was proposed. Some of the authors of this work previously published a ...multiscale approach to simulate ultrafiltration of Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) aqueous solutions. However, the noncovalent interactions between proteins and the membrane surface were not taken into account in the previous formulation. Herein, the proteins-surface interactions were accurately computed by first-principle-based calculations considering also the effect of pH. Both the effective surface of polysulfone (PSU) and the first layer of proteins adsorbed on the membrane surface were accurately modeled. Different from the previous work, the equilibrium distance between proteins was calculated and imposed as lower bound to the protein–protein distances in the compact deposit accumulated on the membrane surface. The computed BSA surface charges were used to estimate the protein potential and the charge density, both necessary to formulate a forces balance at microscopic scale. The protein surface potential was compared with Z-potential measurements of BSA aqueous solution, and a remarkable agreement was found. Finally, the overall additional resistance, as due to both the compact and loose layers of the deposit, was computed, thus allowing the final transition to a macroscopic scale, where an unsteady-state mass transfer model was formulated to describe the behavior of a typical dead-end UF process. A good agreement between simulated and experimental permeate flux decays was observed.
Tumor infiltration by T cells is paramount for effective anti-cancer immune responses. We hypothesized that the T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire of tumor infiltrating T lymphocytes could therefore be ...indicative of the functional state of these cells and determine disease course at different stages in cancer progression. Here we show that the diversity of the TCR of tumor infiltrating T cell at baseline is prognostic in various cancers, whereas the TCR clonality of T cell infiltrating metastatic melanoma pre-treatment is predictive for activity and efficacy of PD1 blockade immunotherapy.
We find four-dimensional de Sitter compactifications of type IIA supergravity by directly solving the 10-dimensional equations of motion. In the simplest examples, the internal space has the topology ...of a circle times an Einstein manifold of negative curvature. An orientifold acts on the circle with two fixed loci, at which an O8_{-} and an O8_{+} plane sit. These orientifold planes are fully backreacted and localized. While the solutions are numerical, the charge and tension of the orientifold planes can be verified analytically. Our solutions have moduli at tree level and can be made parametrically weakly coupled and weakly curved. Their fate in string theory depends on quantum corrections.

Since ...the initial reports of the association between hypovitaminosis D and COVID-19, Vitamin D has been pointed as a potentially interesting treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection. We provide an overview on the current status of vitamin D deficiency, the mechanisms of action of vitamin D and the current literature on the topic, with a special focus on the potential implications for COVID-19 pandemic.

Computational complexity is a quantum information concept that recently has found applications in the holographic understanding of the black hole interior. We consider quantum computational ...complexity for n qubits using Nielsen's geometrical approach. In the definition of complexity there is a big amount of arbitrariness due to the choice of the penalty factors, which parametrizes the cost of the elementary computational gates. In order to reproduce desired features in holography, such as ergodicity and exponential maximal complexity for large number of qubits n , negative curvatures are required. With the simplest choice of penalties, this is achieved at the price of singular sectional curvatures in the large n limit. We investigate a choice of penalties in which we can obtain negative curvatures in a smooth way. We also analyze the relation between operator and state complexities, framing the discussion with the language of Riemannian submersions. This provides a direct relation between geodesics and curvatures in the unitaries and the states spaces, which we also exploit to give a closed-form expression for the metric on the states in terms of the one for the operators. Finally, we study conjugate points for a large number of qubits in the unitary space and we provide a strong indication that maximal complexity scales exponentially with the number of qubits in a certain regime of the penalties space.
This paper presents an economic and energy feasibility analysis of a renewable energy system for a small city in southern Italy to convert it to zero greenhouse gas city by 2030. The proposed energy ...infrastructure utilises different technologies: wind turbine, photovoltaic panels and biogas cogeneration plants to produce electric energy, and thermal solar panels, cogeneration and heat pumps to meet the thermal energy demand of the city. The electrification of transport sector is also considered. The whole city energy system is analysed by the EnergyPLAN software to evaluate streams combination and potential synergies between the different sectors. In order to improve the analysis, PhotoVoltaic technology has been simulated in TRNSYS environment, to obtain detailed prediction of this component of the energy infrastructure. The system behaviour was analysed considering different time bases: daily, weekly and yearly. The EnergyPLAN outputs include the aggregated yearly production and demands of all modelled energy conversion systems, as well as hourly values useful to identify the measures to make Altavilla Silentina nearly zero carbon city. Every measure identified becomes a new input in EnergyPLAN to evaluate its effect on city energy balance. The economic analysis has been performed to evaluate the electricity and thermal energy costs.

This living systematic review aims to summarize evidence on the prevalence of oral signs and symptoms in patients with COVID-19. The review was reported per the PRISMA checklist, and the literature ...search was conducted in 6 databases and in gray literature. Studies published in any language mentioning oral symptoms and signs in patients with COVID-19 were included. The risk of bias was assessed by the Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal tools. The certainty of evidence was evaluated through GRADE assessment. After a 2-step selection, 40 studies were included: 33 cross-sectional and 7 case reports. Overall, 10,228 patients (4,288 males, 5,770 females, and 170 unknown) from 19 countries were assessed. Gustatory impairment was the most common oral manifestation, with a prevalence of 45% (95% CI, 34% to 55%; I2 = 99%). The pooled eligible data for different taste disorders were 38% for dysgeusia and 35% for hypogeusia, while ageusia had a prevalence of 24%. Taste disorders were associated with COVID-19 (odds ratio OR, 12.68; 95% CI, 6.41 to 25.10; I2 = 63%; P < 0.00001), mild/moderate severity (OR, 2.09; 95% CI, 1.25 to 3.49; I2 = 66%; P = 0.005), and female patients (OR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.23 to 2.17; I2 = 70%; P = 0.0007). Oral mucosal lesions presented multiple clinical aspects, including white and erythematous plaques, irregular ulcers, small blisters, petechiae, and desquamative gingivitis. Tongue, palate, lips, gingiva, and buccal mucosa were affected. In mild cases, oral mucosal lesions developed before or at the same time as the initial respiratory symptoms; however, in those who required medication and hospitalization, the lesions developed approximately 7 to 24 d after onset symptoms. Therefore, taste disorders may be common symptoms in patients with COVID-19 and should be considered in the scope of the disease’s onset and progression. Oral mucosal lesions are more likely to present as coinfections and secondary manifestations with multiple clinical aspects (PROSPERO CRD42020184468).
