The measurements of the rare B0-meson decay processes performed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are reviewed. Particular attention is given to the measurement of the branching ratios of the Bs0 ...and B0d meson decays into a pair of muons with the full Run 1 dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb-1.
This paper discusses the potential of ATLAS to study supersymmetry in the “focus point” region of the parameter space of mSUGRA models. The potential to discover a deviation from standard model ...expectations with the first few fb-1 of LHC data was studied using the parametrized simulation of the ATLAS detector. Several signatures were considered, involving hard jets, large missing energy, and either b-tagged jets, opposite-sign isolated electron or muon pairs, or top quarks reconstructed exploiting their fully-hadronic decays. With only 1 fb-1 of data each of these signatures may allow for observing an excess of events over standard model expectations with a statistical significance exceeding five standard deviations. Furthermore, each of the two invariant mass distributions of the two leptons produced by the \(\tilde\chi^0_3\rightarrow\tilde\chi^0_1 l^+ l^-\) and the \(\tilde\chi^0_2\rightarrow\tilde\chi^0_1 l^+ l^-\) three-body decays has a kinematic endpoint that measures the difference between the masses of the parent and daughter neutralino. An analytical expression was derived for the shape of this distribution and was used to fit the simulated LHC data. A measurement of the \(\tilde\chi^0_2-\tilde\chi^0_1\) and \(\tilde\chi^0_3-\tilde\chi^0_1\) mass differences was obtained and this information was used to constrain the MSSM parameter space.
ATLAS data are distributed centrally to Tier-1 and Tier-2 sites. The first stages of data selection and analysis take place mainly at Tier-2 centres, with the final, iterative and interactive, stages ...taking place mostly at Tier-3 clusters. The Italian ATLAS cloud consists of a Tier-1, four Tier-2s, and Tier-3 sites at each institute. Tier-3s that are grid-enabled are used to test code that will then be run on a larger scale at Tier-2s. All Tier-3s offer interactive data access to their users and the possibility to run PROOF. This paper describes the hardware and software infrastructure choices taken, the operational experience after 10 months of LHC data, and discusses site performances.

Heterozygous, de novo, loss-of-function mutations in SOX2 have been shown to cause bilateral anophthalmia. Here we provide a detailed description of the clinical features associated with SOX2 ...mutations in the five individuals with reported mutations and four newly identified cases (including the first reported SOX2 missense mutation). The SOX2-associated ocular malformations are variable in type, but most often bilateral and severe. Of the nine patients, six had bilateral anophthalmia and two had anophthalmia with contralateral microphthalmia with sclerocornea. The remaining case had anophthalmia with contralateral microphthalmia, posterior cortical cataract and a dysplastic optic disc, and was the only patient to have measurable visual acuity. The relatively consistent extraocular phenotype observed includes: learning disability, seizures, brain malformation, specific motor abnormalities, male genital tract malformations, mild facial dysmorphism, and postnatal growth failure. Identifying SOX2 mutations from large cohorts of patients with structural eye defects has delineated a new, clinically-recognizable, multisystem disorder and has provided important insight into the developmental pathways critical for morphogenesis of the eye, brain, and male genital tract.
To evaluate long-term endothelial cell loss after traumatic dislocation and repositioning of an Artisan phakic intraocular lens (PIOL).
Traumatic PIOL dislocation occurred in the patient's left eye 4 ...months after uneventful implantation for unilateral congenital myopia. Using the Konan semi-automated analysis method, endothelial cell density was measured preoperatively, before Artisan repositioning, and 1, 2, and 4 years after primary implantation.
Endothelial cell density was 2770 cells/mm2 preoperatively and 2634 cells/mm2 before Artisan repositioning. After successful repositioning, endothelial cell density progressively decreased--1, 2, and 4 years from primary implantation, endothelial cell density was 2582, 2524, and 2538 cells/mm2, respectively, corresponding to losses of 6.8%, 8.9%, and 8.4%, respectively.
Progressive and long-term endothelial loss after traumatic dislocation and repositioning of the Artisan PIOL may be comparable to that reported after uneventful implantation.
Noncontact specular microscopes and semiautomated methods of endothelial analysis are widely used in the clinical practice and for research purposes. In this study, the interexaminer reproducibility ...between two noncontact specular microscopes using different semiautomated methods was assessed in normal corneas.
Average cell size (ACS), endothelial cell density (ECD), coefficient of variation (CV), and hexagonality values were independently calculated by two examiners with the Topcon SP 2000P Image-NET retraced method and the Konan CC7000 center method in 49 normal subjects. Interexaminer reproducibility and correlation between instruments/methods were assessed through 95% limits of agreement, intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), Pearson correlation coefficient, and Spearman rank test.
Interexaminer reproducibility was good for ACS and ECD measurements (ICC > 0.85) but weak for CV and hexagonality (ICC < 0.65). Significantly higher ACS and lower ECD values (P < 0.05) were obtained with the Topcon in comparison with the Konan method by both examiners. ACS and ECD mean differences were respectively, +26 microm2 and -184 cell/mm2 for examiner 1 and +36 microm2 and -228 cell/mm2 for examiner 2. No significant difference (P > 0.05) between instruments/methods was found in CV or hexagonality values; however, the correlation for these parameters was low (r < 0.20).
Either instrument or method allows reproducible and accurate ACS and ECD measurements on normal corneas, but the difference between the two instruments is systematic and significant. The difference found were not clinically meaningful however for research/longitudinal study purposes, the data collected with the two systems cannot be used interchangeably.

Blepharoptosis of the upper eyelid is a common condition among patients presenting for oculoplastic surgery. Although there are many types of ptosis, the two most frequent clinical cases are simple ...congenital ptosis in young patients and senile ptosis in adults. Patient examination is important to distinguish these from other more infrequent types of ptosis, such as those neurogenic, myogenic and posttraumatic. These latter cases may require specific therapeutic strategies. Ptosis can usually be corrected surgically. The article discusses guidelines for the choice of intervention. Various different surgical techniques are also presented, together with results and complications.

Quark contact interactions are an important signal of new physics. We introduce a model in which the presence of a symmetry protects these new interactions from giving large corrections in flavor ...changing processes at low energies. This minimal model provides the basic set of operators which must be considered to contribute to the high-energy processes. To discuss their experimental signature in jet pairs produced in proton-proton collisions, we simplify the number of possible operators down to two. We show (for a representative integrated luminosity of 200 pb super(-1) at radicals = 7 TeV) how the presence of two operators significantly modifies the bound on the characteristic energy scale of the contact interactions, which is obtained by keeping a single operator.
In the orbital region the variety of tumors is so vast that even an expert oculoplastic surgeon may be deceived. The various tumors may be classified as benign, precancerous and malignant. ...Approximately 5-10% of all skin cancers occur in the eyelids. Incidence studies indicate that basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent malignant eyelid tumor, followed by squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous gland carcinoma and malignant melanoma. Malignant neoplasms represent the leading cause of plastic reconstruction in orbital region, followed by cicatricial retraction, post-traumatic loss of tissue, congenital colobomas. Aim of this review is to classify benign and malignant lesions; to consider the surgical removal approach to the lesion (Mohs micrographic surgery, frozen sections, biopsy, immediate removal and reconstruction with permanent sections) and finally to consider reconstruction techniques with grafts and flaps.
