We have examined the effects of embedded pitch adapters on signal formation in n-substrate silicon microstrip sensors with data from beam tests and simulation. According to simulation, the presence ...of the pitch adapter metal layer changes the electric field inside the sensor, resulting in slowed signal formation on the nearby strips and a pick-up effect on the pitch adapter. This can result in an inefficiency to detect particles passing through the pitch adapter region. All these effects have been observed in the beam test data.
The LHCb experiment is preparing for a major upgrade in 2018–2019. One of the key components in the upgrade is a new silicon tracker situated upstream of the analysis magnet of the experiment. The ...Upstream Tracker (UT) will consist of four planes of silicon strip detectors, with each plane covering an area of about 2m2. An important consideration of these detectors is their performance after they have been exposed to a large radiation dose. In this paper we present test beam results of pre-prototype n-in-p and p-in-n sensors that have been irradiated with fluences up to 4.0×1014neq/cm2.
CERMINE is a comprehensive open-source system for extracting structured metadata from scientific articles in a born-digital form. The system is based on a modular workflow, whose loosely coupled ...architecture allows for individual component evaluation and adjustment, enables effortless improvements and replacements of independent parts of the algorithm and facilitates future architecture expanding. The implementations of most steps are based on supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, which simplifies the procedure of adapting the system to new document layouts and styles. The evaluation of the extraction workflow carried out with the use of a large dataset showed good performance for most metadata types, with the average

score of 77.5 %. CERMINE system is available under an open-source licence and can be accessed at

. In this paper, we outline the overall workflow architecture and provide details about individual steps implementations. We also thoroughly compare CERMINE to similar solutions, describe evaluation methodology and finally report its results.
The impact of heterogeneous catalytic systems, which are based on rare earth metals, on the properties of biodiesel produced via the transesterification process in a stationary reactor (autoclave) ...was thoroughly investigated. The physicochemical attributes, including the specific surface area, were analyzed employing the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. The basicity and acidity levels of the catalytic systems were evaluated through temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia and carbon dioxide (TPD-NHsub.3, TPD-COsub.2), respectively. Furthermore, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis facilitated the assessment of triglyceride conversion and the determination of methyl ester (FAME) selectivity within these processes. Our findings indicate that catalytic systems augmented with lanthanum showcased superior performance. A significant correlation was discerned between the conversion and selectivity to methyl esters and both the specific surface area and the acidity and basicity properties of the catalytic systems under study. These results underscore the crucial role that the physicochemical characteristics of catalytic systems play in optimizing the transesterification process, thereby enhancing the quality of the produced biodiesel. This study contributes valuable insights into the development of more efficient and effective biodiesel production methodologies, highlighting the potential of rare earth metal-based catalysts in renewable energy technologies.
The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic impact of baseline tumor burden and loci on the efficacy of first line renal cancer treatment with sunitinib. Baseline and on-treatment CT ...scans were evaluated. Both the Kaplan-Meier and Weibull modelling survival estimators have been used to describe sunitinib treatment response. Logistic regression was used to confirm associations between tumor site, burden and survival. Additionally, analysis of the metastases co-occurrence was conducted using the Bayesian inference on treated and external validation cohorts. 100 patients with metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma were treated with sunitinib in this study. Presence of metastases in the abdominal region (HR = 3.93), and the number of brain metastases correlate with shorter PFS, while the presence of thoracic metastases (HR = 0.47) with longer PFS. Localization of metastases in the abdominal region significantly impacts risk of metastases development in other locations including bone and brain metastases. Biology of metastases, in particular their localization, requires further molecular and clinical investigation.
Introduction: The life quality assessment in patients at the end of life constitutes an important issue in the palliative care. Learning about the patients' needs and investigating their opinions on ...the care they receive provides an opportunity to improve the work of the interdisciplinary team. The survey focused on the assessment of the life quality in patients, in the aspect of the somatic symptoms they suffer from. Material and methods: The survey comprised 100 patients, hospitalized at the Palliative Care Ward, in the period from October 2013 to March 2014. The patients described their condition in a survey, the participation was entirely voluntary and anonymous. The survey pertained to various aspects influencing the quality of life (QoL). The results obtained were subjected to the statistical analysis with the application of the Pearson's r correlation method. Results: The examined patients constituted a representative group in terms of gender and age. A vast majority of the patients had been under palliative care for more than 2 months. The assessment in Karnofsky scale provided data on the patients' general condition and their QoL. The results of the survey confirm that most investigated patients were satisfied with the care and with the effectiveness of the medical treatment applied. The patients report experiencing somatic symptoms in various degrees. Conclusions: A vast majority of the subjects declare their satisfaction with the effectiveness of the treatment applied, irrespective of the somatic symptoms they suffer from. Patients characterized by a higher QoL are more satisfied with the treatment applied.
Common Map of Academia (COMAC) is a system that keeps information about scientists and publications. It uses bibliographical information as a source of knowledge. In the article we show briefly this ...system. We present how we used that system for parts of Polish national CRIS: Polish national bibliography and newly created PolIndex – polish citation index. We present algorithms used for enhancing CRIS data: document deduplication, citations matching and authors identification. Finally we show performance statistics.
In this paper a new family of kernel functions for SVM classifiers, based on a statistically–induced measure of distance between observations in the pattern space, is proposed and experimentally ...evaluated in the context of binary classification problems. The application of the proposed approach improves the accuracy of results compared to the case of training without postulated enhancements.
Numerical results outperform those of the SVM with Gaussian and Laplace kernels.
