A novel antifungal protein with a molecular mass around 50 kDa was purified from seeds of Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. using ammonium sulfate fractionation followed by gel filtration on a Sephadex ...G-75 Superfine (Sigma) column and reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography on a C8 column. The protein, designated FP1-A, with a novel N-terminal sequence AMVHSPGG(S)FS(P), showed growth inhibitory activity of filamentous fungi Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Fusarium solani.
ABSTRACT Chondrosarcoma, an unusual malignant neoplasm, develops in cartilaginous tissue and presents low rate of metastasis, mainly affecting the axial skeleton from the adult to senile dogs. In the ...face of unusual occurrence of chondrosarcoma in the long bones of young dogs, the present report aimed to describe it in the right humerus of a two-and-a-half-year-old Siberian Husky, attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Franca, with limping of the right thoracic limb, for 20 days. The radiographic examination of the humerus showed bone lysis and periosteal proliferation. In the incisional biopsy, proliferation of atypical chondrocytes with diffuse distribution, interspersed with compact bone matrix, was observed. The amputation of the limb was performed, and the fragment histopathological analysis showed grade I chondrosarcoma. Periodic returns were made for neoplastic staging, and at 240 days after surgery lung metastases were detected, however, the tutor did not authorize chemotherapy and radiotherapy for financial reasons and due to the absence of respiratory symptoms so far (410 days after surgery). Although uncommon, chondrosarcoma can affect the long bones of young dogs, with clinical signs similar to other bone neoplasms, and, even with the radical limb amputation, can demonstrate systemic metastasis.
To identify the associations between MetS and its components and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a population with arterial hypertension (AH), or diabetes mellitus (DM) accompanied by the Primary ...Health Care (PHC).
A cross-sectional study with 788 individuals diagnosed with AH and/or DM followed by PHC of Viçosa, Brazil. Anthropometric, biochemical and clinical measures were performed for the diagnosis of MetS and CKD. MetS was identified using the NCEP-ATPIII criteria. CKD was identified by estimating the glomerular filtration rate using the CKD-EPI equation. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the chances of CKD associated with MetS and its components and specific combinations of components.
The prevalence of MetS reported in the population was 65.4%, that of hidden CKD was 15.4%. The prevalence of CKD among participants with MetS was 75.2%. The most prevalent component of MetS in the population was AH (96.7%). Elevated fasting blood glucose, central obesity, and reduced HDL-c were significantly associated with an increased chance of CKD (OR = 2.80, 95% CI 1.76-4.45, OR = 1.68, 95% CI, 05-2.71, OR = 1.61, CI 95% 1.03-2.50, respectively). For the multivariate adjustment, the participants with MetS were 2 times more likely to have CKD than those without MetS (OR = 2.07; 95% CI, 1.25-3.44). The combination of three components of MetS high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and elevated fasting blood glucose and the combination of four components of MetS high blood pressure, reduced HDL-c, high fasting blood glucose and abdominal obesity were associated with increased odds of CKD (OR = 2.67, CI 95% 1.70-4.20, OR = 2.50, CI 95% 1.55-4.02, respectively).
MetS, as well as its individual or combined components were independently associated with CKD in the population with AH and/or DM accompanied by PHC.
The risks of selenium (Se) water contamination to human and aquatic life make it important to develop and apply efficient Se removal methods. Selenium photocatalytic reduction is an effective ...technique for this purpose, but it still suffers from limitations related to the photocatalyst recovery at the end of the process. In the present work, magnetic particles were coated with a titanium dioxide (TiO

) layer, using a sol–gel process, in order to obtain a magnetic recoverable Fe/TiO
2
photocatalysts. The catalysts were prepared with different Fe concentrations and with or without thermal treatment, being then characterized by different techniques and applied in the Se photoreduction. Both calcined and non-calcined catalysts presented similar specific surface areas (19–29 m
2
g
− 1
), but the latter showed better results in the photocatalytic tests (100% of Se removal in 15 min using the non-calcined 8% Fe photocatalyst). The photostability test performed using the best catalyst (non-calcined 8% Fe photocatalyst) indicated a decrease in the photoactivity from the second photocatalytic cycle onwards. Besides, the catalysts lost their magnetic properties after being calcined.

Abstract
Background
During radiation therapy, unwanted scatter to healthy tissues outside the target field may occur. Children and adolescents are more sensitive to radiation injury, and the thyroid ...gland is particularly susceptible to these effects.
Purpose
To assess acute changes in thyroid function and volume in children and adolescents undergoing radiotherapy for a variety of non-thyroid cancers.
Materials and Methods
Thirty-one children and adolescents underwent radiation therapy of various body areas in which the thyroid was not included. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T4), free thyroxine (fT4), triiodothyronine (T3), anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies and thyroglobulin were measured before, on the last day and at 1 and 3 months after the end of radiotherapy. Ultrasound scans were taken and 6- and 24-hour
131
I uptake was measured before and after treatment. The scattered dose to the thyroid region was estimated with a treatment planning system or measured with thermoluminescent dosimeters.
Results
The median radiation dose scattered to the thyroid was 296·6 cGy (IQR 16·7–1,709·0). Levels of TSH (
p
= 0·575), T4 (
p
= 0·950), fT4 (
p
= 0·510), T3 (
p
= 0·842), thyroglobulin (
p
= 0·620) and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (
p
= 0·546) were statistically similar at all four time points. There were no differences between pre- and post-radiotherapy thyroid volume and
131
I uptake (
p
= 0·692 and 0·92, respectively).
Conclusion
More sensitive methods may be required to ascertain whether acute injury to the follicular epithelium occurs with lower radiation doses scattered to the thyroid.
From late May to early June 2022, 130 people died in catastrophic landslides and flash flood events triggered by exceptionally heavy rains in the states of Pernambuco, Alagoas, and Paraíba, along the ...coast of Northeast Brazil. Total rainfall in the city of Recife on May 25–30 was 551 mm, 140 mm higher than the average of the month of May. Rain was heaviest on May 25 and 28, with 100–200 mm and 151–250 mm, respectively. This coincided with easterly wave disturbances. May 28 saw the most rain, due to a significant cold front. Fourteen municipalities in the metropolitan region of Recife declared a state of emergency. According to the Civil Defense of Pernambuco state, the rain impacted 130,000 people there. Most of the heavy precipitation fell over areas with medium to very high geological vulnerability to landslides and extreme hydrological events. The loss of life and substantial economic impacts in Recife caused by the heavy precipitation of May 2022 and the disasters induced by it show that this city, like many others around the world, has limited capacity to cope with climate extremes. Urbanization has increased population density occupying hills and slopes of the city, contributing to the problem. To reduce the impact of such disasters, residents must be made aware of the risks of climate-related events, and they must be encouraged to heed alerts warning of natural disasters issued by state and federal institutions. Efficient monitoring of risk is also needed. Risk management will be viable only when everyone participates, which requires education and cultural change.

ABSTRACT Seminoma is a testicular neoformation originating from germ cells, commonly occurring in dogs. With higher prevalence in senile animals, the biological behavior of canine seminomas generally benign. This case reports seminoma with mestastasis in the orbital region in a 14-year-old dog. The animal was treated with a complaint of increased volume in the left orbit, and later a nodule in the testicle was discovered. Fine-needle aspiration of the orbit mass initially indicated a high-grade lymphoma. The definitive diagnosis of diffused seminoma was established by histopathological examination, resulting in poorly differentiated malignant neoplasia. Finally, the diagnosis was confirmed through immunohistochemistry, being the result compatible with diffused seminoma. Metastatic seminomas reported in dogs are quite uncommon. In this work we report a case of diffused anaplastic seminoma in dogs, where the main focus of metastasis was observed in the orbital region, and we also describe and discuss the difficulties encountered in the diagnostic.
