We report on the ultrafast dynamics of magnetic order in a single crystal of CuO at a temperature of 207 K in response to strong optical excitation using femtosecond resonant x-ray diffraction. In ...the experiment, a femtosecond laser pulse induces a sudden, nonequilibrium increase in magnetic disorder. After a short delay ranging from 400 fs to 2 ps, we observe changes in the relative intensity of the magnetic ordering diffraction peaks that indicate a shift from a collinear commensurate phase to a spiral incommensurate phase. These results indicate that the ultimate speed for this antiferromagnetic reorientation transition in CuO is limited by the long-wavelength magnetic excitation connecting the two phases.
The Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking In-beam Nuclear Array (GRETINA) is a new generation high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer consisting of electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. GRETINA is ...capable of reconstructing the energy and position of each γ-ray interaction point inside the crystal with high resolution. This enables γ-ray energy tracking which in turn provides an array with large photopeak efficiency, high resolution and good peak-to-total ratio. GRETINA is used for nuclear structure studies with demanding γ-ray detection requirements and it is suitable for experiments with radioactive-ion beams with high recoil velocities. The GRETINA array has a 1π solid angle coverage and constitutes the first stage towards the full 4π array GRETA. We present in this paper the main parts and the performance of the GRETINA system.
Phosvitin, the most highly phosphorylated metal-binding protein found in nature, binds more than 100 calcium ions, and has been identified as an agent that could be used to generate biomineralization ...scaffolds. Because of published reports describing phosvitin’s affinity for calcium and potential antibiotic activity, this study was undertaken in order to evaluate phosvitin for both antibiotic activity against common microorganisms and the ability to protect hydroxyapatite surfaces from acid damage. To more clearly define its antibiotic action, the effects of phosvitin on Micrococcus luteus, P. mirabilis, B. cereus, E. coli, and S. epidermidis were evaluated. In both Kirby–Bauer tests and liquid culture growth inhibition assays, phosvitin inhibited M. luteus, a microorganism that thrives in the human mouth, but not the other bacteria tested. The MIC of phosvitin was determined to be 31.3 μg/mL when delivered in 1 mM CaCl2 but was 0.5 mg/mL in the absence of added calcium. Expanding on the potential impacts of phosvitin on the mouth, its action was evaluated in a model of tooth decay represented by acid-damaged hydroxyapatite discs. SEM, AFM, and FAAS analyses revealed that pretreatment of discs with phosvitin modulated the damage-induced morphology and topography changes associated with acid-damaged discs.
Butyltins are widely used biocides and accumulate in the food chain. Tributyltin is an imposex-inducing endocrine disrupter in animals. Imposex is characterized by the development of additional male ...sex organs on females. In a previous study, we identified tributyltin as an inhibitor of human cytochrom P450 aromatase activity. The present work focuses on the impact of butyltins on human androgen metabolism. Activation of androgens is mediated by two human 5α-reductase isoenzymes. 5α-Reductase type 1 was completely inhibited by tributyltin chloride (IC
50=19.9
μM) and dibutyltin dichloride (IC
50=32.9
μM), whereas 5α-reductase type 2 was only inhibited by tributyltin chloride (IC
50=10.8
μM). Both isoenzymes were not affected by tetrabutyltin or monobutyltin indicating that at least two butyl groups bound to the positively charged Sn are required for the interaction of butyltins with the enzymes. Tributyltin inhibited 5α-reductase type 1 competitively whereas an irreversible inhibition was evident for the type 2 isoenzyme. In contrast to the distinct effects on 5α-reductases, reductive brain 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity was not inhibited by any butyltin. Insufficient activation of androgens is responsible for developmental disorders of the male reproductive system such as hypospadias. At pharmacologic levels butyltins might contribute to the onset of developmental disorders of the male reproductive system. At present, however, it is unknown whether these levels are reached after acute or chronic exposure to butyltins.
CMOS monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) have demonstrated excellent performance as tracking detectors for charged particles. They provide an outstanding spatial resolution (a few μm), a detection ...efficiency of ≳99.9%, very low material budget (0.05%X0) and good radiation tolerance (≳1Mrad, ≳1013neq/cm2) (Deveaux et al. 1). This makes them an interesting technology for various applications in heavy ion and particle physics. Their tolerance to bulk damage was recently improved by using high-resistivity (∼1kΩcm) epitaxial layers as sensitive volume (Deveaux et al. 1, Dorokhov et al. 2).
The radiation tolerance of conventional MAPS is known to depend on the pixel pitch. This is as a higher pitch extends the distance, which signal electrons have to travel by thermal diffusion before being collected. Increased diffusion paths turn into a higher probability of loosing signal charge due to recombination. Provided that a similar effect exists in MAPS with high-resistivity epitaxial layer, it could be used to extend their radiation tolerance further. We addressed this question with MIMOSA-18AHR prototypes, which were provided by the IPHC Strasbourg and irradiated with reactor neutrons. We report about the results of this study and provide evidences that MAPS with 10μm pixel pitch tolerate doses of ≳3×1014neq/cm2.
This multi-method study used a participatory action research approach to examine the complex net of socio-cultural factors that influenced behaviour related to tuberculosis (TB) prevention and ...treatment in the 10 highest risk cultural groups consisting of immigrant and Aboriginal populations in the province of Alberta, Canada. Trained community research associates collected qualitative interview data and helped with interpretation and evaluation. A community advisory committee established foundation principles and monitored the ethical and cultural appropriateness of the research process. A key finding is that although patients with active disease learn about TB from health professionals, people in high-risk populations need to learn more about TB transmission and prevention prior to contact. This is particularly important given that lack of knowledge of TB was strongly associated with negative attitudes towards TB and a worse experience of the disease. The study results underline the need for accessible and culturally appropriate health education about TB in the high risk groups. This can be accomplished in collaboration with lay people, particularly those who have recovered from active TB, their family members and health workers from the community.
The Gamma Ray Energy Tracking In-Beam Nuclear Array (GRETINA), capable of determining the energy and position (within 2 mm) of each gamma-ray interaction point and tracking multiple gamma-ray ...interactions, has been designed. GRETINA will be composed of seven detector modules, each with four highly pure germanium crystals. Each crystal has 36 segments and one central contact instrumented by charge sensitive amplifiers. Two custom designed modules, the Digitizer/Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and the Trigger Timing and Control, compose the electronics of this system. The digitizer/DSP converts the analog information with 14-bit analog to digital converters operating at 100 MS/s, and digitally processes the data to determine the energy and timing information of the gamma interactions with the crystal. Each Digitizer/DSP is controlled by and sends trigger information to the Trigger Timing & Control system through a bidirectional Gbit link. Presently four different trigger algorithms are planned for the trigger system and can be selected for trigger decision. In this paper the details of the electronics and algorithms of the GRETINA data acquisition and trigger system are presented and the performance is reviewed.
Abstract Background Impedance threshold device technology harnesses the patient's normal physiological mechanisms to increase circulation during hypotensive crises. We report the first clinical use ...of one version of this device on a spontaneously breathing hypotensive pregnant woman. Objective The objective of our study was to report this case to help Emergency Medical Service rescue personnel to noninvasively treat hypotensive but conscious spontaneously breathing patients. Case Report A 28-year-old woman who was 21 weeks pregnant developed frank syncope at home but recovered spontaneously. When Emergency Medical Service paramedics arrived, her initial blood pressure and heart rate were 115/80 mm Hg and 125 beats/min, respectively. She suddenly complained of feeling anxious and developed profound bradycardia and hypotension, followed by 20 s of asystole. An impedance threshold device (ResQGARDTM ) with −7 cmH2 O resistance to inspiration was rapidly applied using a facemask. After four spontaneous breaths, blood pressure increased from 62/40 mm Hg to 106/66 mm Hg. She was hemodynamically stable thereafter. Conclusions In this case report, the multiple physiological effects of inspiration through −7 cmH2 O resistance helped this pregnant hypotensive patient to rapidly and noninvasively restore adequate perfusion and reduced the duration of her hypotensive episode. To our knowledge, this is the first report of this technology in a pregnant hypotensive but spontaneously breathing patient.
