Charged-particle tracking in the international Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE) will be performed using two solenoidal spectrometers, each instrumented with a tracking detector based on ...350μm diameter scintillating fibres. The design and construction of the trackers is described along with the quality-assurance procedures, photon-detection system, readout electronics, reconstruction and simulation software and the data-acquisition system. Finally, the performance of the MICE tracker, determined using cosmic rays, is presented.
Recent evidence suggests that, for some, leaking urine may be a barrier to physical activity. Although important from a lifestyle point of view, bladder problems and incontinence also affect both men ...and women socially, psychologically and economically. For example, it can be particularly distressing when incontinence occurs post-prostate surgery, especially if these patients were continent before surgery. This case series outlines an aggressive, innovative, exercise-based approach to the management of stress incontinence post-prostatectomy. The program attempts to enhance neuromuscular and vascular systems associated with continence, with emphasis placed on the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. The program was undertaken by 14 incontinent post-prostatectomy patients (mean age 63.5 y, using a mean of 3.5 sanitary pads per day). The program was initiated a mean of two months post-op and had a mean duration of six months. Upon completion of the program, 10 patients were found to be completely dry with three retaining a small leakage (a few drops). The 14th could not comply with the program because of illness. The results of this study appear promising in this patient population. There are indications for further research.
Antiphospholipid syndrome is probably the most common acquired hypercoagulable state, but information on perioperative management is sparse. Minor alterations in anticoagulant therapy, infection, or ...a surgical insult may trigger widespread thrombosis. The perioperative course of a 31-yr-old woman with primary anticardiolipin antiphospholipid antibody syndrome requiring a mitral valve replacement is described. Postoperatively, she developed acute global biventricular failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support and plasmapheresis. The management of anticoagulation and cardiac surgery in this condition is reviewed.

+) — is given by a factor of close to ten. The experimental status of beauty lifetimes, while less complete, has still reached a new level of quality and is now better than 5% for the commoner states. New theoretical tools, based mainly on heavy quark expansions, have been developed; they incorporate as well as transcend earlier phenomenological descriptions. The observed pattern in the charm lifetime ratios is reproduced in a semi-quantitative manner as well as could be expected; as far as the beauty lifetime ratios are concerned some problems may well be emerging. The maturity level achieved in the measurements bodes quite well for future challenges where reliable and efficient tracking of the decay vertices will be crucial.
In exploring the implications of information and communication technologies (ICTs), Fitzpatrick has suggested the need for a new category of rights—virtual rights. To explore this claim, we consider ...how developments in information management and processing differentially impact on citizens. Using examples from the public and private sectors we explore the dangers posed by the emergent surveillance society and agree these may require new rights. But we suggest that the state has by no means been an exemplar and, moreover, that many of the “surveilling” practices employed by commercial organizations might be used by the state to pursue socially just ends. We argue against a criticalist perspective that narrowly focuses on the dangers posed by new ICTs. Indeed, from a realist perspective we argue that a positive cybercriticalism that seeks to tackle exclusion by harnessing and constraining the surveillance qualities of ICTs is a pressing policy priority.
