This case study, conducted at a large suburban high school with two sections of a contemporary literature class for struggling 12th grade students, sought to understand how repurposing a ...non-educational technology such as Goodreads might impact adolescents' academic literacy practices and events. Incorporating Goodreads in a high school classroom allowed the researcher to examine how the design of this learning environment affected students' views of themselves as readers and writers, as well as their academic products. The three research questions addressed were: (1) How does the use of Goodreads affect the literacy practices of adolescents in a high school class? (2) How does the use of Goodreads affect the literacy events in a high school class? (3) How can Goodreads be effectively integrated with the existing curriculum in an English language arts classroom? While there was no significant change in the students' literacy practices, there were changes in the observable literacy events. The students wrote more text when reviewing books on Goodreads as compared to in-class worksheets. The teacher also expressed surprise that students who typically did not complete assignments did complete the activities using Goodreads. The study also demonstrated the use of the Social Infrastructure Framework proposed by Bielaczyc (2006) as a useful guide for planning the use of Goodreads in the classroom. This research provides a baseline for future exploration into ways teachers can use Goodreads to reach students in ELA classrooms. Quantitative evaluations of the aromaticity (antiaromaticity) of neutral exocyclic substituted cyclopropenes (HC)2CX (X = BH to InH (group 13), CH2 to SnH2 (group 14), NH to SbH (group 15), O to Te ...(group 16)) by their computed extra cyclic resonance energies (ECRE, via the block-localized wave function method) and by their aromatic stabilization energies (ASEs, via energy decomposition analyses) correlate satisfactorily (R 2 = 0.974). Electronegative X-based substituents increase the aromaticity of the cyclopropene rings, whereas electropositive substituents have the opposite effect. For example, (HC)2CO is the most aromatic (ECRE = 10.3 kcal/mol), and (HC)2CInH is the most antiaromatic (ECRE = −15.0 kcal/mol). The most refined dissected nucleus-independent chemical shift magnetic aromaticity index, NICS(0)πzz , also agrees with both energetic indexes (R 2 = 0.968, for ECRE; R 2 = 0.974, for ASE), as do anisotropy of the induced current density plots.
The nature of the bonding and the aromaticity of the heavy Group14 homologues of cyclopropenylium cations E3H3+ and E2H2E'H+ (E, E'=C-Pb) have been investigated systematically at the BP86/TZ2P DFT ...level by using several methods. Aromatic stabilization energies (ASE) were evaluated from the values obtained from energy decomposition analysis (EDA) of charged acyclic reference molecules. The EDA-ASE results compare well with the extra cyclic resonance energy (ECRE) values given by the block localized wavefunction (BLW) method. Although all compounds investigated are Huckel 4n+2 π electron species, their ASEs indicate that the inclusion of Group14 elements heavier than carbon reduces the aromaticity; the parent C3H3+ ion and Si2H2CH+ are the most aromatic, and Pb3H3+ is the least so. The higher energies for the cyclopropenium analogues reported in 1995 employed an isodesmic scheme, and are reinterpreted by using the BLW method. The decrease in the strength of both the π cyclic conjugation and the aromaticity in the order CSi>Ge>Sn>Pb agrees reasonably well with the trends given by the refined nucleus-independent chemical shift NICS(0)πzz index.
This thesis is a study of common practices and unique challenges of theatrical prop shop management in universities and how this compares to professional theaters and other prop producing ...organizations. The following pages will identify the commonalities and differences between prop shops in terms of management of budgets, schedules and personnel and will offer examples of common current practices. Also reproduced here is a survey of prop managers and its results, which was developed to produce facts and figures which are used as evidence. A direct comparison of educational and professional theater institutions has not been published. The evidence presented by the survey and a study of existing literature suggests that the two types of institutions are not as different as anecdotal evidence might suggest. This survey and the concussions drawn here will serve as a starting point for an academic discussion about how prop shops are managed and how the subject is taught.
We present a variety of new compositing techniques using Multi-plane Images (MPI's) Zhou et al. 2018 derived from footage shot with an inexpensive and portable light field video camera array. The ...effects include camera stabilization, foreground object removal, synthetic depth of field, and deep compositing. Traditional compositing is based around layering RGBA images to visually integrate elements into the same scene, and often requires manual 2D and/or 3D artist intervention to achieve realism in the presence of volumetric effects such as smoke or splashing water. We leverage the newly introduced DeepView solver Flynn et al. 2019 and a light field camera array to generate MPIs stored in the DeepEXR format for compositing with realistic spatial integration and a simple workflow which offers new creative capabilities. We demonstrate using this technique by combining footage that would otherwise be very challenging and time intensive to achieve when using traditional techniques, with minimal artist intervention.
We present a portable multi-camera system for recording panoramic light field video content. The proposed system captures wide baseline (0.8 meters), high resolution (>15 pixels per degree), large ...field of view (>220°) light fields at 30 frames per second. The array contains 47 time-synchronized cameras distributed on the surface of a hemispherical, 0.92 meter diameter plastic dome. We use commercially available action sports cameras (Yi 4k) mounted inside the dome using 3D printed brackets. The dome, mounts, triggering hardware and cameras are inexpensive and the array itself is easy to fabricate. Using modern view interpolation algorithms we can render objects as close as 33-cm to the surface of the array.
We present a novel approach to view synthesis using multiplane images (MPIs). Building on recent advances in learned gradient descent, our algorithm generates an MPI from a set of sparse camera ...viewpoints. The resulting method incorporates occlusion reasoning, improving performance on challenging scene features such as object boundaries, lighting reflections, thin structures, and scenes with high depth complexity. We show that our method achieves high-quality, state-of-the-art results on two datasets: the Kalantari light field dataset, and a new camera array dataset, Spaces, which we make publicly available.

This Immersive Pavilion installation introduces our new system for capturing, reconstructing, compressing, and rendering light field video content. By leveraging DeepView, a recently introduced view ...synthesis algorithm, our system can reconstruct challenging scenes with view-dependent reflections, semi-transparent surfaces, and near-field objects as close as 34 cm to the surface of our 46 camera capture rig. Improving upon past light field video systems that required specialized storage and graphics hardware for playback, our compressed videos can be rendered in a web browser or on mobile VR headsets while being streamed over a gigabit network connection. This makes ours the first system to encode high quality light field video at sufficiently low bandwidth for internet streaming.
A model describing the motion of a magnetized sphere in a fluid medium subject to an applied field is developed. The inspiration for this system is rooted in technologies and procedures being ...explored in the biomedical community. In these systems, the accepted approximation of Stokes' flow about the sphere is discussed and limitations to this are identified with drag force relations accounting for wall effects presented. For this system, the sphere is approximated as a point dipole and the resulting electromagnetic force model is presented. For motion of the sphere using static electromagnets, a reduced coil set technique is proposed. The technique consists of utilizing the minimum number of coils for generation of the desired force on the sphere. This approach is in contrast to the existing solutions which use the full coil set for parallel and anti-parallel motion and single out a solution for the underdetermined system. A technique for determining the proper coil combination is developed from examining the definiteness of the geometric field functions. A coil array configuration consisting of a four coil assembly is investigated to facilitate planar motion of a magnetized spherical particle in a fluid medium. For this configuration, the reduced coil set consists of only two adjacent coils being active at any given time. The exact inverse current solution for the minimized coil set is derived and presented. The system dynamic model is formulated and represented in a nonlinear state space system. This study also derives analytical expressions describing the magnetic field and field gradient terms generated by an assembly of four coils grouped about a coordinate origin with the central axes of the coils all residing in the same plane. This model will prove to be quite useful for optimal design of an apparatus to serve as an experimental platform for such a system. The model predicts the magnetic field produced by an elliptically shaped coil, approximated as a finite number of rectangularly shaped loops. The law of Biot-Savart is utilized to calculate the magnetic field and field gradient terms for each loop. The loops are then used to approximate each turn of a wound coil and are superposed to calculate the total field generated by a single coil. Homogenous coordinate transforms are utilized to describe the field generated by the quad coil configuration. An analytical formulation based on finite loops for calculation of self inductance, mutual inductance, and resistance is also derived and presented. Magnetic field measurements of wound coils are performed and compared to the predictive model, with satisfactory results being demonstrated. The technique of representing the wound coils as an assemblage of finite loops is found sufficient to formulate a model which may be used for predictive modeling of a system to facilitate two dimensional motion of a magnetized sphere. A minimization routine based on discrete steepest descent gradient method is developed and presented. The functional used for the minimization routine has been developed and is established as the norm of instantaneous power applied to an adjacent set of coils. This allows for summary of the power in two coils by one calculation. The routine calculates the required coil spacing and coil geometry necessary to achieve motion of the magnetized sphere along a given circular trajectory with minimal power dissipation. Control of a small magnetized spherical particle in 2D space using a square arrangement of electromagnets is presented. A classical controller with and without feedforward is implemented in concert with a novel switching approach. A sample of the experimental results for motion of the particle along a desired trajectory in a fluid medium are presented and discussed. Further, the experimental results are compared with computer simulation results to get insights into the accuracy of the dynamic model.
