We report the first results of AS2UDS, an 870 m continuum survey with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) of a total area of ∼50 arcmin2 comprising a complete sample of 716 ...submillimeter sources drawn from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS) map of the UKIDSS/UDS field. The S2CLS parent sample covers a 0.96 degree2 field at 850 = 0.90 0.05 mJy beam−1. Our deep, high-resolution ALMA observations with 870 ∼ 0.25 mJy and a 0 15-0 30 FWHM synthesized beam, provide precise locations for 695 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) responsible for the submillimeter emission corresponding to 606 sources in the low-resolution, single-dish map. We measure the number counts of SMGs brighter than S870 ≥ 4 mJy, free from the effects of blending and show that the normalization of the counts falls by 28% 2% in comparison with the SCUBA-2 published counts, but that the shape remains unchanged. We determine that 44 − 14 + 16 % of the brighter single-dish sources with S850 ≥ 9 mJy consist of a blend of two or more ALMA-detectable SMGs brighter than S870 ∼ 1 mJy (corresponding to a galaxy with a total-infrared luminosity of LIR 1012 L ), in comparison with 28% 2% for the single-dish sources at S850 ≥ 5 mJy. Using the 46 single-dish submillimeter sources that contain two or more ALMA-detected SMGs with photometric redshifts, we show that there is a significant statistical excess of pairs of SMGs with similar redshifts (<1% probability of occurring by chance), suggesting that at least 30% of these blends arise from physically associated pairs of SMGs.
Myocardial infarction (MI) produces acute changes in strain and stiffness within the infarct that can affect remote areas of the left ventricle (LV) and drive pathological remodeling. We hypothesized ...that intramyocardial delivery of a hydrogel within the MI region would lower wall stress and reduce adverse remodeling in Yorkshire pigs (n = 5). 99mTc-Tetrofosmin SPECT imaging defined the location and geometry of induced MI and border regions in pigs, and in vivo and ex vivo contrast cine computed tomography (cineCT) quantified deformations of the LV myocardium. Serial in vivo cineCT imaging provided data in hearts from control pigs (n = 3) and data from pigs (n = 5) under baseline conditions before MI induction, post-MI day 3, post-MI day 7, and one hour after intramyocardial delivery of a hyaluronic acid (HA)-based hydrogel with shear-thinning and self-healing properties to the central infarct area. Isolated, excised hearts underwent similar cineCT imaging using an ex vivo perfused heart preparation with cyclic LV pressurization. Deformations were evaluated using nonlinear image registration of cineCT volumes between end-diastole (ED) and end-systole (ES), and 3D Lagrangian strains were calculated from the displacement gradients. Post-MI day 3, radial, circumferential, maximum principal, and shear strains were reduced within the MI region (p < 0.04) but were unchanged in normal regions (p > 0.6), and LV end diastolic volume (LV EDV) increased (p = 0.004), while ejection fraction (EF) and stroke volume (SV) decreased (p < 0.02). Post-MI day 7, radial strains in MI border zones increased (p = 0.04) and dilation of LV EDV continued (p = 0.052). There was a significant negative linear correlation between regional radial and maximum principal/shear strains and percent infarcted tissue in all hearts (R2 > 0.47, p < 0.004), indicating that cineCT strain measures could predict MI location and degree of injury. Post-hydrogel day 7 post-MI, LV EDV was significantly reduced (p = 0.009), EF increased (p = 0.048), and radial (p = 0.021), maximum principal (p = 0.051), and shear strain (p = 0.047) increased within regions bordering the infarct. A smaller strain improvement within the infarct and normal regions was also noted on average along with an improvement in SV in 4 out of 5 hearts. CineCT provides a reliable method to assess regional changes in strains post-MI and the therapeutic effects of intramyocardial hydrogel delivery.

ABSTRACT
We present a new determination of the galaxy stellar-mass function (GSMF) over the redshift interval 0.25 ≤ z ≤ 3.75, derived from a combination of ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope ...(HST) imaging surveys. Based on a near-IR-selected galaxy sample selected over a raw survey area of 3 deg2 and spanning ≥4 dex in stellar mass, we fit the GSMF with both single and double Schechter functions, carefully accounting for Eddington bias to derive both observed and intrinsic parameter values. We find that a double Schechter function is a better fit to the GSMF at all redshifts, although the single and double Schechter function fits are statistically indistinguishable by z = 3.25. We find no evidence for significant evolution in M⋆, with the intrinsic value consistent with $\log _{10}(M^{\star }/\hbox{$\rm \, M_{\odot }$})=10.55\pm {0.1}$ over the full redshift range. Overall, our determination of the GSMF is in good agreement with recent simulation results, although differences persist at the highest stellar masses. Splitting our sample according to location on the UVJ plane, we find that the star-forming GSMF can be adequately described by a single Schechter function over the full redshift range, and has not evolved significantly since z ≃ 2.5. In contrast, both the normalization and the functional form of the passive GSMF evolve dramatically with redshift, switching from a single to a double Schechter function at z ≤ 1.5. As a result, we find that while passive galaxies dominate the integrated stellar-mass density at z ≤ 0.75, they only contribute ≲10 per cent by z ≃ 3. Finally, we provide a simple parametrization that provides an accurate estimate of the GSMF, both observed and intrinsic, at any redshift within the range 0 ≤ z ≤ 4.
Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is characterized by myoclonic jerks of the upper limbs, often triggered by cognitive stressors. Here we aim to reconcile this particular seizure phenotype with the ...known frontal lobe type neuropsychological profile, photosensitivity, hyperexcitable motor cortex, and recent advanced imaging studies that identified abnormal functional connectivity of the motor cortex and supplementary motor area (SMA).
We acquired fMRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a cohort of 29 patients with JME and 28 healthy control subjects. We used fMRI to determine functional connectivity and DTI-based region parcellation and voxel-wise comparison of probabilistic tractography data to assess the structural connectivity profiles of the mesial frontal lobe.
Patients with JME showed alterations of mesial frontal connectivity with increased structural connectivity between the prefrontal cognitive cortex and motor cortex. We found a positive correlation between DTI and fMRI-based measures of structural and functional connectivity: the greater the structural connectivity between these 2 regions, the greater the observed functional connectivity of corresponding areas. Furthermore, connectivity was reduced between prefrontal and frontopolar regions and increased between the occipital cortex and the SMA.
The observed alterations in microstructural connectivity of the mesial frontal region may represent the anatomic basis for cognitive triggering of motor seizures in JME. Changes in the mesial frontal connectivity profile provide an explanatory framework for several other clinical observations in JME and may be the link between seizure semiology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, and imaging findings in JME.
The dismal outcome of gastric cancer patients highlights the need for diagnostic biomarkers and effective therapeutic targets, such as microRNAs. We sought to discover microRNAs involved in gastric ...cancer, and to elucidate their downstream target mechanisms. Both cultured gastric epithelial cells (HFE145 and NCI-N87) and primary human gastric tissues (31 non-neoplastic stomach (NS) and 25 gastric carcinomas (GC)) were studied. MicroRNA microarrays and quantitative RT-PCR were applied to discover and verify differentially expressed microRNAs. in vitro cell migration and invasion, cell proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis assays were executed to elucidate biological effects of microRNA-192 and -215. Western blotting and luciferase assays were performed to confirm direct messenger RNA targeting by microRNA-192 and -215. MicroRNA microarray analyses revealed that 25 and 20 microRNAs were upregulated and downregulated in GC vs NS, respectively. Expression levels of both microRNA-192 and -215 were significantly higher in GC than in NS (P<0.05). Luciferase assays suggested that microRNA-215 inhibits activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM) expression at the posttranscriptional level. In addition, expression levels of ALCAM were significantly lower in GC than in NS. Mimics and inhibitors, respectively, of microRNA-192 or -215 exerted no effect on cell cycle or apoptosis in the immortalized normal gastric cell line HFE145 or the gastric cancer cell line NCI-N87. However, mimics of microRNA-192 or -215 significantly increased growth rates in HFE145 cells, whereas inhibitors of microRNA-192 or -215 caused significant decreases in growth rates in NCI-N87 cells. ALCAM knockdown by an ALCAM-specific siRNA significantly increased cell growth in HFE145 cells. Both transfection of mimics of microRNA-192 or -215 and ALCAM knockdown by an ALCAM-specific siRNA significantly increased the migration of HFE145 cells. In conclusion, in gastric cancer, both microRNA-192 and -215 are overexpressed in vivo and exert cell growth and migration-promoting effects in vitro, thus representing potential microRNAs with a role in cancer in the human stomach.
Exosomes are nano‐sized, membrane‐bound vesicles released from cells that transport cargo including DNA, RNA, and proteins, between cells as a form of intercellular communication. In addition to ...their role in intercellular communication, exosomes are beginning to be appreciated as agents of immunoregulation that can modulate antigen presentation, immune activation, suppression, and surveillance. This article summarizes how these multifaceted functions of exosomes may promote development and/or progression of chronic inflammatory lung diseases including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary fibrosis. The potential of exosomes as a novel therapeutic is also discussed.
The aim of this study was to determine if there were focal cortical abnormalities in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) using neuropsychological investigations and MRI.
Twenty-eight patients with JME ...and a large sample of healthy controls were assessed using a series of neuropsychological tests as well as structural and diffusion tensor MRI (DTI). DTI measures assessed fractional anisotropy (FA) within a white matter skeleton.
Neuropsychological testing indicated subtle dysfunctions in verbal fluency, comprehension, and expression, as well as nonverbal memory and mental flexibility. Utilizing whole-brain voxel-based morphometry for gray matter MRI data and tract-based spatial statistics for white matter diffusion MRI data, we found reductions in gray matter volume (GMV) in the supplementary motor area and posterior cingulate cortex and reductions in FA in underlying white matter of the corpus callosum. Supplementary motor area FA predicted scores in word naming tasks and expression scores. Posterior cingulate cortex GMV and FA predicted cognitive inhibition scores on the mental flexibility task.
The neuropsychological, structural, and tractography results implicate mesial frontal cortex, especially the supplementary motor area, and posterior cingulate cortex in JME.
