Recent measurements of the positron energy spectrum obtained from inverse beta decay interactions of reactor electron antineutrinos show an excess in the 4 to 6 MeV region relative to current ...predictions. First-principles calculations of fission and beta decay processes within a typical pressurized water reactor core identify prominent fission daughter isotopes as a possible origin for this excess. These calculations also predict percent-level substructures in the antineutrino spectrum due to Coulomb effects in beta decay. Precise measurement of these substructures can elucidate the nuclear processes occurring within reactors. These substructures can be a systematic issue for measurements utilizing the detailed spectral shape.
We report on a terrestrial gamma ray flash (TGF) that occurred on 15 August 2014 coincident with an altitude‐triggered lightning at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing (ICLRT) ...in North Central Florida. The TGF was observed by a ground‐level network of gamma ray, close electric field, distant magnetic field, Lightning Mapping Array (LMA), optical, and radar measurements. Simultaneous gamma ray and LMA data indicate that the upward positive leader of the triggered lightning flash induced relativistic runaway electron avalanches when the leader tip was at about 3.5 km altitude, resulting in the observed TGF. Channel luminosity and electric field data show that there was an initial continuous current (ICC) pulse in the lightning channel to ground during the time of the TGF. Modeling of the observed ICC pulse electric fields measured at close range (100–200 m) indicates that the ICC pulse current had both a slow and fast component (full widths at half maximum of 235 μs and 59 μs) and that the fast component was more or less coincident with the TGF, suggesting a physical association between the relativistic runaway electron avalanches and the ICC pulse observed at ground. Our ICC pulse model reproduces moderately well the measured close electric fields at the ICLRT as well as three independent magnetic field measurements made about 250 km away. Radar and LMA data suggest that there was negative charge near the region in which the TGF was initiated.

Recent measurements of reactor-produced antineutrino fluxes and energy spectra are inconsistent with models based on measured thermal fission beta spectra. In this paper, we examine the dependence of ...antineutrino production on fission neutron energy. In particular, the variation of fission product yields with neutron energy has been considered as a possible source of the discrepancies between antineutrino observations and models. In simulations of low-enriched and highly-enriched reactor core designs, we find a substantial fraction of fissions (from 5% to more than 40%) are caused by nonthermal neutrons. Using tabulated evaluations of nuclear fission and decay, we estimate the variation in antineutrino emission by the prominent fission parents U235, Pu239, and Pu241 versus neutron energy. The differences in fission neutron energy are found to produce less than 1% variation in detected antineutrino rate per fission of U235, Pu239, and Pu241. Corresponding variations in the antineutrino spectrum are found to be less than 10% below 7 MeV antineutrino energy, smaller than current model uncertainties. We conclude that insufficient modeling of fission neutron energy is unlikely to be the cause of the various reactor anomalies. Our results also suggest that comparisons of antineutrino measurements at low-enriched and highly-enriched reactors can safely neglect the differences in the distributions of their fission neutron energies.
Feeding conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) reduces milk fat synthesis in lactating dairy cows, and the effect has been shown to be specific for the trans-10, cis-12 CLA isomer. Our objectives were to ...examine potential mechanisms by which trans-10, cis-12 CLA inhibits milk fat synthesis. Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 4) in late lactation were used in a balanced 2 x 2 crossover design. Treatments consisted of a 5 d abomasal infusion of either skim milk (control) or purified trans-10, cis-12 CLA (13.6 g/d) emulsified in skim milk. On d 5 of infusion, mammary gland biopsies were performed and a portion of the tissue analyzed for mRNA expression of acetyl CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthetase, delta 9-desaturase, lipoprotein lipase, fatty acid binding protein, glycerol phosphate acyltransferase and acylglycerol phosphate acyltransferase. Lipogenic capacity was evaluated with another portion of the tissue. Infusion of trans-10, cis-12 CLA decreased milk fat content and yield 42 and 48%, respectively and increased the trans-10, cis-12 CLA content in milk fat from < 0.1 to 4.9 mg/g. Reductions in milk fat content of C4 to C16 fatty acids contributed 63% to the total decrease in milk fat yield (molar basis). Analysis of the ratios of specific fatty acid pairs indicated trans-10, cis-12 CLA also shifted fatty acid composition in a manner consistent with a reduction in delta 9-desaturase. Mammary explant incubations with radiolabeled acetate established that lipogenic capacity was decreased 82% and acetate oxidation to CO2 was reduced 61% when cows received trans-10, cis-12 CLA. Infusing trans-10, cis-12 CLA also decreased the mRNA expression of all measured enzymes by 39 to 54%. Overall, data demonstrated the mechanism by which trans-10, cis-12 CLA inhibits milk fat synthesis includes decreasing expression of genes that encode for enzyme involved in circulating fatty acid uptake and transport, de novo fatty acid synthesis, desaturation of fatty acids and triglyceride synthesis.
Nuclear reactors are the most intense man-made source of antineutrinos, providing a useful tool for the study of these particles. Oscillation due to the neutrino mixing angle is revealed by the ...disappearance of reactor over ∼km distances. Use of additional identical detectors located near nuclear reactors reduce systematic uncertainties related to reactor emission and detector efficiency, significantly improving the sensitivity of oscillation measurements. The Double Chooz, RENO, and Daya Bay experiments set out in search of using these techniques. All three experiments have recently observed reactor disappearance, and have estimated values for of 9.3◦ 2.1°, 9.2◦ 0.9°, and 8.7◦ 0.4° respectively. The energy-dependence of disappearance has also allowed measurement of the effective neutrino mass difference, . Comparison with from accelerator measurements supports the three-flavor model of neutrino oscillation. The current generation of reactor experiments are expected to reach ∼3% precision in both and . Precise knowledge of these parameters aids interpretation of planned measurements, and allows future experiments to probe the neutrino mass hierarchy and possible CP-violation in neutrino oscillation. Absolute measurements of the energy spectra of deviate from existing models of reactor emission, particularly in the range of 5-7 MeV.
Under certain dietary situations, rumen biohydrogenation results in the production of unique fatty acids that inhibit milk fat synthesis. The first of these to be identified was trans-10, cis-12 ...conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), but others are postulated to contribute to diet-induced milk fat depression (MFD). Our objective was to examine the potential role of trans-9, cis-11 CLA in the regulation of milk fat. In a preliminary study, we used gas-liquid and high-performance liquid chromatography techniques to examine milk fat samples from a diet-induced MFD study and found that an increase in trans-9, cis-11 CLA corresponded to the decrease in milk fat yield. We investigated this further using a CLA enrichment of 9, 11 isomers to examine the biological effect of trans-9, cis-11 CLA on milk fat synthesis. Four rumen-fistulated Holstein cows were randomly assigned in a 4 x 4 Latin square experiment involving 5-d treatment periods and abomasal infusion of 1) ethanol (control), 2) a 9, 11 CLA mix (containing 32% trans-9, cis-11, 29% cis-9, trans-11, and 17% trans-9, trans-11), 3) a trans-9, trans-11 CLA supplement, and 4) a trans-10, cis-12 CLA supplement (positive control). The trans-9, trans-11 CLA and trans-10, cis-12 CLA supplements were of high purity (>90%), and all supplements were infused at a rate to provide 5 g/d of the CLA isomer of interest. Milk yield and dry matter intake did not differ among treatments. Compared with the control treatment, milk fat yield was reduced by 15% for the 9, 11 CLA mixture and by 27% for the trans-10, cis-12 CLA treatment. We also found that trans-9, trans-11 CLA had no effect on milk fat yield, and previous research has shown that milk fat yield is unaltered when cows are infused with cis-9, trans-11 CLA. When all treatments were considered, results suggested that trans-9, cis-11 was the CLA isomer in the 9, 11 CLA mix responsible for the reduction in milk fat synthesis, although the magnitude was less than that observed for trans-10, cis-12 CLA. Interestingly, trans-9, trans-11 CLA altered the milk fat desaturase index, further demonstrating that alterations in desaturase can occur independently of effects on milk fat synthesis. Overall, our investigations identified that an increase in milk fat content of trans-9, cis-11 CLA was associated with diet-induced MFD and provided evidence of a role for this isomer in MFD based on the 15% reduction in milk fat yield with abomasal infusion of a CLA enrichment that supplied 5 g/d of trans-9, cis-11 CLA.
We report a measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment with nearly 4 million reactor νover ¯_{e} inverse β decay candidates observed over 1958 days ...of data collection. The installation of a flash analog-to-digital converter readout system and a special calibration campaign using different source enclosures reduce uncertainties in the absolute energy calibration to less than 0.5% for visible energies larger than 2 MeV. The uncertainty in the cosmogenic ^{9}Li and ^{8}He background is reduced from 45% to 30% in the near detectors. A detailed investigation of the spent nuclear fuel history improves its uncertainty from 100% to 30%. Analysis of the relative νover ¯_{e} rates and energy spectra among detectors yields sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0.0856±0.0029 and Δm_{32}^{2}=(2.471_{-0.070}^{+0.068})×10^{-3} eV^{2} assuming the normal hierarchy, and Δm_{32}^{2}=-(2.575_{-0.070}^{+0.068})×10^{-3} eV^{2} assuming the inverted hierarchy.
A measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is described in detail. Six 2.9-GWth nuclear power reactors of the Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear power ...facilities served as intense sources of ν¯e’s. Comparison of the ν¯e rate and energy spectrum measured by antineutrino detectors far from the nuclear reactors (∼1500–1950 m) relative to detectors near the reactors (∼350–600 m) allowed a precise measurement of ν¯e disappearance. More than 2.5 million ν¯e inverse beta-decay interactions were observed, based on the combination of 217 days of operation of six antineutrino detectors (December, 2011–July, 2012) with a subsequent 1013 days using the complete configuration of eight detectors (October, 2012–July, 2015). The ν¯e rate observed at the far detectors relative to the near detectors showed a significant deficit, R=0.949±0.002(stat)±0.002(syst). The energy dependence of ν¯e disappearance showed the distinct variation predicted by neutrino oscillation. Analysis using an approximation for the three-flavor oscillation probability yielded the flavor-mixing angle sin22θ13=0.0841±0.0027(stat)±0.0019(syst) and the effective neutrino mass-squared difference of |Δmee2|=(2.50±0.06(stat)±0.06(syst))×10−3 eV2. Analysis using the exact three-flavor probability found Δm322=(2.45±0.06(stat)±0.06(syst))×10−3 eV2 assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy and Δm322=(−2.56±0.06(stat)±0.06(syst))×10−3 eV2 for the inverted hierarchy.
We examined the role of trans-octadecenoic acids in milk fat depression when low fiber diets were fed. The study consisted of four experimental periods with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of ...treatments to test the effects of dietary fat (saturated vs. unsaturated) and rumen fermentation (high fiber diets vs. low fiber diets) on milk fat depression. Dietary fiber concentration and type of fat had significant effects on milk fat. Effects were most pronounced when unsaturated fat was added to the low fiber diet. When the low fiber diet plus unsaturated fat was fed, milk fat percentage and yield were decreased by 30 and 35%, respectively, compared with the percentage and yield when the high fiber diet plus saturated fat was fed. Alterations in rumen fermentation caused by differences in dietary fiber concentrations had little effect on the amount of trans-octadecenoic acids in milk fat, and the total amount did not correlate with changes in milk fat percentage. Further examination of the isomeric profile of trans-octadecenoic acid revealed substantial differences among the dietary treatments. Although the addition of unsaturated fat resulted in marked increases in the milk fat content of trans-11-octadecenoic acid, regardless of dietary fiber concentration, the low fiber diet plus unsaturated fat increased the content of trans-10-octadecenoic acid. This combination was also associated with a significant decrease in milk fat content and yield. When the low fiber diets were fed, circulating insulin concentrations were elevated, regardless of the type of fat supplement. However, marked milk fat depression occurred only when the low fiber diet was supplemented with unsaturated fat
