Background: A limited number of studies suggest a higher prevalence of periodontal disease among individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA); however, results have been inconsistent. Further, it is ...unclear to what extent poor oral hygiene among patients with RA may account for this association.
Methods: The association between RA and periodontitis was examined in 57 subjects with RA and 52 healthy controls, matched by age and gender. Oral examination included plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), and clinical attachment loss (CAL). Potential risk factors for periodontal disease, such as smoking, education, alcohol consumption, and body mass index (BMI), as well as chronic diseases associated with RA and periodontal disease were assessed through questionnaires.
Results: In a stepwise logistic regression, including RA status, age, gender, education, smoking, alcohol consumption, and BMI, only RA status and age remained significant predictors of periodontal disease. Subjects with RA had a significant 8.05‐fold increased odds (95% confidence interval: 2.93 to 22.09) of periodontitis compared to controls. The strength of the association was attenuated but remained statistically significant after further adjustment for PI, GI, or both. PI alone accounted for 12.4%, GI alone accounted for 11.1%, and PI and GI combined accounted for 13.4% of the association between RA and periodontitis.
Conclusions: Subjects with RA have significantly increased periodontal attachment loss compared to controls. Oral hygiene may only partially account for this association.
•MPV is significantly elevated in the patients with VN.•Elevated MPV indicates the possible role of the thrombosis in the etiology of VN.•NLR and PLR are significantly higher in patients with VN than ...healthy controls.•The elevation of the markers, NLR and PLR, supports the role of inflammation in VN.
To evaluate the alterations in inflammatory markers, NLR and PLR, as well as mean platelet volume (MPV) and the other parameters of complete blood counts (CBC) in adult patients with vestibular neuritis (VN).
Designed as a case control study. The records of the patients, who were hospitalized due to an acute onset vertigo, and diagnosed as VN, were analysed retrospectively. The complete blood count (CBC) measures of the patients were statistically compared with the measures of healthy subjects. The correlations between the length of hospitalization and the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were also analysed.
One hundred four patients with VN and 138 healthy controls were included. MPV, white blood cell and neutrophil counts, NLR and PLR were significantly higher; while lymphocyte count was significantly lower in the VN group (p < 0.001). There were no correlations between the length of hospitalization and NLR or PLR.
The elevations of NLR and PLR support the role of inflammation in VN. The high level of MPV indicates the possible role of the vascular thrombosis in the etiology of VN.
We investigated the darkening of two high

Background
Findings have shown that dipyrone has a beneficial effect on skin flap survival. A pharmacologic explanation for this effect points to its vascular smooth muscle-relaxing effect. This ...study evaluated the effect of dipyrone on blood flow and thus survival of rat random dorsal skin flaps.
Methods
For this study, 27 male Wistar albino rats were randomly assigned to control (treated with sterile saline) and treatment (treated with dipyrone 100 mg/kg) groups. A random dorsal skin flap measuring 4 × 10 cm was raised in each animal. The edges of the flap were sutured back into their original place. Dipyrone treatment continued at 100 mg/kg per day during the 7-day observation period. Blood flow was recorded by laser Doppler preoperatively (baseline), immediately after the flap was sutured back to its original position (acute), and on postoperative day 7. The degree of necrosis was evaluated by the grid method on day 7. Mean percentage necrosis and minimum laser Doppler readings were compared between the two groups.
Results
A significant increase in blood flow was observed in the dipyrone group at the acute phase but not on postoperative day 7. The percentage of the necrotic area was lower in the treatment group. However, it did not reach the significance level (
p
= 0.09).
Conclusion
Dipyrone significantly decreases skin blood flow at the acute phase of flap elevation although the necrotic area does not reach the significance level.
Approximately 2000 PMTs will be used to detect the Cherenkov light generated in quartz fibers embedded in the CMS-HF Forward Calorimeter. The Hamamatsu R7525HA PMT was chosen for this purpose. We ...measured the transit time, transit time spread, pulse width, rise time, anode dark current, and relative gain for each tube in the test station at the University of Iowa. Life-time, gain versus high voltage, and single photoelectron spectrum measurements were also done on a small sample of PMTs. All the tubes were tested to verify that they conform to the HF requirements.
We report the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600GeV/cΣ−, π− and 540GeV/cp beams from the SELEX (E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. K±K± ...correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, kT, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, R, and the correlation strength, λ, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types.
