This paper presents the case for how students can be helped to increase their scientific vocation by experimental work and the introduction of particle physics into pre-university studies. These two ...ideas are the two main lines of work of the ADMIRA initiative, which has been created by individuals belonging to different and complementary educational and research institutions. The initiative consists of a network of schools that share Minipix devices, a readout system for the Timepix detector designed at CERN in the framework of the Medipix2 Collaboration. The schools receive logistical and technical support from the local University (the University of Barcelona) and from CERN. The centres involved and the objectives, as well as the characteristics of the project are presented. The technical and didactic materials available are also shown. Finally, some initiative data has been analysed to show its rapid growth, and some students' research is presented showing the diversity of tasks that can be done with such detectors.
The effort at the UB and CNM to study the feasibility of using standard CMOS technology Geiger avalanche photo-diodes (GAPDs) for pixel tracking detectors is reported. Generally APDs are used as ...photon detector devices. The possibility of using APDs in Geiger mode (that is reverse-biased above breakdown) for direct particle detection is the purpose of the ongoing R&D program, which tries to exploit GAPDs’ features suitable for particle detection.

A Monte Carlo simulation to study the signal temporal shape of the LHCb Scintillator Pad Detector (SPD) and the Preshower (PRS) subdetectors is presented. Being a full simulation too slow to tune the ...free parameters related to some unknown properties of the detector, a fast Monte Carlo simulation is introduced. The pulseshape information is needed for the LHCb experiment general Monte Carlo simulation (Gauss) and it is extracted from this fast simulation. The approach presented here can be easily extended and used over similar geometrical configurations.

The final choice as the photomultiplier solution for both the LHCb Pre-Shower (PS) and the Scintillator Pad Detector (SPD) are the R7600-00-M64MOD Hamamatsu 64 channel photomultiplier tubes (MaPMT). ...A total of 220 units have been purchased to the manufacturer and around 100 units, the part corresponding to the SPD, have been characterized at the photon detection test bench facility in the University of Barcelona (UB) high energy physics group laboratory. There, the crucial features of the tubes such as linearity, gain, channel cross-talk and anode uniformity of response have been measured to ensure the compliance with the specifications agreed with the manufacturer.
We study the processes (ProQuest: Formulae and/or non-USASCII text omitted) using a data sample of 519fb super(-1) recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e ...super(+)e super(-) collider at center-of-mass energies at and near the Upsilon(nS) (n=2, 3, 4) resonances. We observe eta super(c) decays to both final states and perform Dalitz plot analyses using a model-independent partial wave analysis technique. This allows a model-independent measurement of the mass-dependence of the I=1/2 KpiS-wave amplitude and phase. A comparison between the present measurement and those from previous experiments indicates similar behavior for the phase up to a mass of 1.5GeV/c super(2). In contrast, the amplitudes show very marked differences. The data require the presence of a new a0(1950) resonance with parameters m=1931+ or -14+ or -22MeV/c super(2) and Gamma=271+ or -22+ or -29MeV.
