The global reach of human activities affects all natural ecosystems, so that the environment is best viewed as a social-–ecological system. Consequently, a more integrative approach to environmental ...science, one that bridges the biophysical and social domains, is sorely needed. Although models and frameworks for social-–ecological systems exist, few are explicitly designed to guide a long-term interdisciplinary research program. Here, we present an iterative framework, "“Press-–Pulse Dynamics"” (PPD), that integrates the biophysical and social sciences through an understanding of how human behaviors affect "“press"” and "“pulse"” dynamics and ecosystem processes. Such dynamics and processes, in turn, influence ecosystem services -–thereby altering human behaviors and initiating feedbacks that impact the original dynamics and processes. We believe that research guided by the PPD framework will lead to a more thorough understanding of social-–ecological systems and generate the knowledge needed to address pervasive environmental problems.
Urban ecological studies, including focus on cities, suburbs, and exurbs, while having deep roots in the early to mid 20th century, have burgeoned in the last several decades. We use the state factor ...approach to highlight the role of important aspects of climate, substrate, organisms, relief, and time in differentiating urban from non-urban areas, and for determining heterogeneity within spatially extensive metropolitan areas. In addition to reviewing key findings relevant to each state factor, we note the emergence of tentative “urban syndromes” concerning soils, streams, wildlife and plants, and homogenization of certain ecosystem functions, such as soil organic carbon dynamics. We note the utility of the ecosystem approach, the human ecosystem framework, and watersheds as integrative tools to tie information about multiple state factors together. The organismal component of urban complexes includes the social organization of the human population, and we review key modes by which human populations within urban areas are differentiated, and how such differentiation affects environmentally relevant actions. Emerging syntheses in land change science and ecological urban design are also summarized. The multifaceted frameworks and the growing urban knowledge base do however identify some pressing research needs.
The Gamma‐ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on the Fermi Gamma‐ray Space Telescope detected 12 intense terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) during its first year of observation. Typical maximum energies for ...most of the TGFs are ∼30 MeV, with one TGF having a 38 MeV photon; two of the TGFs are softer and longer than the others. After correcting for instrumental effects, a representative bright TGF is found to have a fluence of ∼0.7 photons cm−2. Pulses are either symmetrical or have faster risetimes than fall times; they are well fit with Gaussian or lognormal functions. The fastest risetime observed was 7 μs, constraining the source radius to be less than about 2 km from the velocity of light. TGFs with multiple pulses separated in time have been known since their discovery; the GBM sample also includes clear cases of partially overlapping pulses. Four TGFs are associated with lightning locations from the World Wide Lightning Location Network. With the several μs absolute time accuracy of GBM, the time order can be confidently identified: one TGF occurred before the lightning, two were simultaneous, and one TGF occurred after the lightning.
We report on a terrestrial gamma ray flash (TGF) that occurred on 15 August 2014 coincident with an altitude‐triggered lightning at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing (ICLRT) ...in North Central Florida. The TGF was observed by a ground‐level network of gamma ray, close electric field, distant magnetic field, Lightning Mapping Array (LMA), optical, and radar measurements. Simultaneous gamma ray and LMA data indicate that the upward positive leader of the triggered lightning flash induced relativistic runaway electron avalanches when the leader tip was at about 3.5 km altitude, resulting in the observed TGF. Channel luminosity and electric field data show that there was an initial continuous current (ICC) pulse in the lightning channel to ground during the time of the TGF. Modeling of the observed ICC pulse electric fields measured at close range (100–200 m) indicates that the ICC pulse current had both a slow and fast component (full widths at half maximum of 235 μs and 59 μs) and that the fast component was more or less coincident with the TGF, suggesting a physical association between the relativistic runaway electron avalanches and the ICC pulse observed at ground. Our ICC pulse model reproduces moderately well the measured close electric fields at the ICLRT as well as three independent magnetic field measurements made about 250 km away. Radar and LMA data suggest that there was negative charge near the region in which the TGF was initiated.

The Integrative Psychiatric Research (iPSYCH) consortium has established a large Danish population-based Case-Cohort sample (iPSYCH2012) aimed at unravelling the genetic and environmental ...architecture of severe mental disorders. The iPSYCH2012 sample is nested within the entire Danish population born between 1981 and 2005, including 1 472 762 persons. This paper introduces the iPSYCH2012 sample and outlines key future research directions. Cases were identified as persons with schizophrenia (N=3540), autism (N=16 146), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (N=18 726) and affective disorder (N=26 380), of which 1928 had bipolar affective disorder. Controls were randomly sampled individuals (N=30 000). Within the sample of 86 189 individuals, a total of 57 377 individuals had at least one major mental disorder. DNA was extracted from the neonatal dried blood spot samples obtained from the Danish Neonatal Screening Biobank and genotyped using the Illumina PsychChip. Genotyping was successful for 90% of the sample. The assessments of exome sequencing, methylation profiling, metabolome profiling, vitamin-D, inflammatory and neurotrophic factors are in progress. For each individual, the iPSYCH2012 sample also includes longitudinal information on health, prescribed medicine, social and socioeconomic information, and analogous information among relatives. To the best of our knowledge, the iPSYCH2012 sample is the largest and most comprehensive data source for the combined study of genetic and environmental aetiologies of severe mental disorders.

A visually apparent but scientifically untested outcome of land-use change is homogenization across urban areas, where neighborhoods in different parts of the country have similar patterns of roads, ...residential lots, commercial areas, and aquatic features. We hypothesize that this homogenization extends to ecological structure and also to ecosystem functions such as carbon dynamics and microclimate, with continental-scale implications. Further, we suggest that understanding urban homogenization will provide the basis for understanding the impacts of urban land-use change from local to continental scales. Here, we show how multi-scale, multi-disciplinary datasets from six metropolitan areas that cover the major climatic regions of the US (Phoenix, AZ; Miami, FL; Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Minneapolis-St Paul, MN; and Los Angeles, CA) can be used to determine how household and neighborhood characteristics correlate with land-management practices, land-cover composition, and landscape structure and ecosystem functions at local, regional, and continental scales.
We present the first Fermi Space Telescope Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) catalog of 4,144 terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs), detected since launch in 11 July 2008 through 31 July 2016. We discuss ...the updates and improvements to the triggered data and off‐line search algorithms, comparing this improved detection rate of ∼800 TGFs per year with event rates from previously published TGF catalogs from other missions. A Bayesian block algorithm calculated the temporal and spectral properties of the TGFs, revealing a delay between the hard (>300 keV) and soft (≤300 keV) photons of around 27 μs. Detector count rates of “low‐fluence” events were found to have average rates exceeding 150 kHz. Searching the World‐Wide Lightning Location Network data for radio sferics within ±5 min of each TGF revealed a clean sample of 1,314 World‐Wide Lightning Location Network locations, which were used to to accurately locate TGF‐producing storms. It also revealed lightning and storm activity for specific regions, as well as seasonal and daily variations of global lightning patterns. Correcting for the orbit of Fermi, we quantitatively find a marginal excess of TGFs being produced from storms over land near oceans (i.e., narrow isthmuses and small islands). No difference was observed between the duration of TGFs over the ocean and land. The distribution of TGFs at a given local solar time for predefined American, Asian, and African regions were confirmed to correlate well with known regional lightning rates.

CONTEXT: The urban heat island (UHI) is a well-documented pattern of warming in cities relative to rural areas. Most UHI research utilizes remote sensing methods at large scales, or climate sensors ...in single cities surrounded by standardized land cover. Relatively few studies have explored continental-scale climatic patterns within common urban microenvironments such as residential landscapes that may affect human comfort. OBJECTIVES: We tested the urban homogenization hypothesis which states that structure and function in cities exhibit ecological “sameness” across diverse regions relative to the native ecosystems they replaced. METHODS: We deployed portable micrometeorological sensors to compare air temperature and humidity in residential yards and native landscapes across six U.S. cities that span a range of climates (Phoenix, AZ; Los Angeles, CA; Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN; Boston, MA; Baltimore, MD; and Miami, FL). RESULTS: Microclimate in residential ecosystems was more similar among cities than among native ecosystems, particularly during the calm morning hours. Maximum regional actual evapotranspiration (AET) was related to the morning residential microclimate effect. Residential yards in cities with maximum AET <50–65 cm/year (Phoenix and Los Angeles) were generally cooler and more humid than nearby native shrublands during summer mornings, while yards in cities above this threshold were generally warmer (Baltimore and Miami) and drier (Miami) than native forests. On average, temperature and absolute humidity were ~6 % less variable among residential ecosystems than among native ecosystems from diverse regions. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that common residential land cover and structural characteristics lead to microclimatic convergence across diverse regions at the continental scale.
The delivery of autologous cells to increase angiogenesis is emerging as a treatment option for patients with cardiovascular disease but may be limited by the accessibility of sufficient cell ...numbers. The beneficial effects of delivered cells appear to be related to their pluripotency and ability to secrete growth factors. We examined nonadipocyte stromal cells from human subcutaneous fat as a novel source of therapeutic cells.
Adipose stromal cells (ASCs) were isolated from human subcutaneous adipose tissue and characterized by flow cytometry. ASCs secreted 1203+/-254 pg of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) per 10(6) cells, 12 280+/-2944 pg of hepatocyte growth factor per 10(6) cells, and 1247+/-346 pg of transforming growth factor-beta per 10(6) cells. When ASCs were cultured in hypoxic conditions, VEGF secretion increased 5-fold to 5980+/-1066 pg/10(6) cells (P=0.0016). The secretion of VEGF could also be augmented 200-fold by transfection of ASCs with a plasmid encoding VEGF (P<0.05). Conditioned media obtained from hypoxic ASCs significantly increased endothelial cell growth (P<0.001) and reduced endothelial cell apoptosis (P<0.05). Nude mice with ischemic hindlimbs demonstrated marked perfusion improvement when treated with human ASCs (P<0.05).
Our experiments delineate the angiogenic and antiapoptotic potential of easily accessible subcutaneous adipose stromal cells by demonstrating the secretion of multiple potentially synergistic proangiogenic growth factors. These findings suggest that autologous delivery of either native or transduced subcutaneous ASCs, which are regulated by hypoxia, may be a novel therapeutic option to enhance angiogenesis or achieve cardiovascular protection.
We report the detection of pulsed gamma-ray emission from the fast millisecond pulsars (MSPs) B1937+21 (also known as J1939+2134) and B1957+20 (J1959+2048) using 18 months of survey data recorded by ...the Fermi Large Area Telescope and timing solutions based on radio observations conducted at the Westerbork and Nancay radio telescopes. In addition, we analyzed archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and XMM-Newton X-ray data for the two MSPs, confirming the X-ray emission properties of PSR B1937+21 and finding evidence (~4 Delta *s) for pulsed emission from PSR B1957+20 for the first time. In both cases the gamma-ray emission profile is characterized by two peaks separated by half a rotation and are in close alignment with components observed in radio and X-rays. These two pulsars join PSRs J0034--0534 and J2214+3000 to form an emerging class of gamma-ray MSPs with phase-aligned peaks in different energy bands. The modeling of the radio and gamma-ray emission profiles suggests co-located emission regions in the outer magnetosphere.
