ECAL0 is a new electromagnetic calorimeter designed for studying generalized parton distributions at the COMPASS II experiment at CERN. It will be located next to the target and will cover larger ...photon angles (up to 30 degrees). It is a modular high-granularity Shashlyk device with total number of individual channels of approx. 1700 and readout based on wavelength shifting fibers and micropixel avalanche photodiodes. Characterization of the calorimeter includes tests of particular sub-components, tests of complete modules and module arrays, as well as a pilot run of a fully-functional, quarter-size prototype in the COMPASS experiment. The main goals of the tests on low-intensity electron beam at the ELSA accelerator in Bonn were: to provide energy calibration using electrons, to measure angular response of the calorimeter and to perform an energy scan to cross-check previously collected data. A dedicated measurement setup was prepared for the tests, including a 3x3 array of the ECAL0 modules, a scintillating-fibre hodoscope and a remotely-controlled motorized movable platform. The measurements were performed using three electron energies: 3.2 GeV, 1.6 GeV and 0.8 GeV. They include a calibration of the whole detector array with a straight beam and multiple angular scans.
The recoil proton polarization has been measured in the p(e-->,e'p-->)pi(0) reaction in parallel kinematics around W = 1232 MeV, Q2 = 0.121 (GeV/c)2, and epsilon = 0.718 using the polarized cw ...electron beam of the Mainz Microtron. All three proton polarization components, Px/P(e) = (-11.4+/-1.3+/-1.4)%, P(y) = (-43.1+/-1.3+/-2.2)%, and P(z)/P(e) = (56.2+/-1.5+/-2.6)%, could be measured simultaneously. The Coulomb quadrupole to magnetic dipole ratio, CMR = (-6.4+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.8(syst))%, was determined from Px in the framework of the Mainz Unitary Isobar Model. The consistency among the reduced polarizations and the extraction of the ratio of longitudinal-to-transverse response is discussed.
The array of 3 × 3 modules of the electromagnetic calorimeter ECAL0 of the COMPASS experiment at CERN has been tested with an electron beam of the ELSA (Germany) facility. The dependence of the ...response and the energy resolution of the calorimeter from the angle of incidence of the electron beam has been studied. A good agreement between the experimental data and the results of Monte Carlo simulation has been obtained. It will significantly expand the use of simulation to optimize event reconstruction algorithms.
To test the hypothesis that elevated plasma levels of natriuretic peptides may serve to identify patients with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, we assessed the predictive diagnostic value of ...natriuretic peptide levels, in addition to clinical and electrocardiographic risk factors, as noninvasive indicators of cardiac dysfunction. Plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide (cANP) (99-126), N-terminal fragment of proANP (nANP) (26-55), nANP(80-96), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP-32), proBNP(22-46), and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP-22) were measured in 211 subjects before cardiac catheterization. The strongest correlations with parameters of LV function were found for nANP(80-96) (up to
r = –0.55,
p < 0.0001), whereas there was no significant correlation with proBNP(22-46) or CNP-22. In patients with LV ejection fractions (LVEF) ≤45% (
n = 38) nANP(26-55), nANP(80-96), cANP(99-126), and BNP-32 were significantly increased (
p < 0.001). Partition values for elevated versus normal natriuretic peptide levels were obtained from normal controls and used to separate subjects with and without LV dysfunction. Receiver operating characteristic analysis for LVEF ≤45% indicated a significantly better diagnostic accuracy for high levels of nANP(80-96), nANP(22-56), cANP(99-126), and BNP-32 than for proBNP and CNP-22. Multivariate analysis by logistic regression identified Q waves and bundle branch block in the electrocardiogram as well as elevated plasma levels of cANP, nANP(80-96), and nANP(26-55) as the strongest independent predictors of low ejection fractions. The relative risk of LV dysfunction was raised up to tenfold in subjects with high natriuretic peptide levels (
p < 0.001). The addition of nANP(80-96) and nANP(26-55) to the combination of clinical and electrocardiographic risk factors did not further improve the diagnostic sensitivity for the detection of LVEF ≤45%, but it markedly increased the overall accuracy (59% to 81%,
p < 0.001) and specificity (55% to 81%,
p < 0.001). Among natriuretic peptides, elevated nANP(80-96) and nANP(26-55) levels have the strongest impact on the detection of LV dysfunction. They add to the diagnostic information contained in clinical and electrocardiographic factors. Plasma levels alone or in combination with clinical factors seem to be of value for a refined identification of abnormal LV function in the individual patient. (Am Heart J 1997;134:442-9.)
BGO-OD is a new meson photoproduction experiment at the ELSA facility of Bonn University. It aims at the investigation of non strange and strange baryon excitations, and is especially designed to be ...able to detect weekly bound meson-baryon type structures. The setup for the BGO-OD experiment is presented, the characteristics of the photon beam and the detector performances are shown and the initial experimental program is discussed.
The results obtained at the BGO-OD experiment with the BGO calorimeter, equipped with the new electronic readout based on sampling ADCs, during the tests performed with the beam time of March and ...June 2012 are presented. The proper functioning of the apparatus has allowed the reconstruction of the pseudo-scalar mesons π0 and η invariant masses. The simulation of the η' photoproduction reaction prepared for a proposal to the joint ELSA-MAMI Physics Advisory Committee is also presented.
