The XENON1T experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso is the most sensitive direct detection experiment for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting particles (WIMPs) with masses ...above 6 GeV/c2 scattering off nuclei. The detector employs a dual-phase time projection chamber with 2.0 metric tons of liquid xenon in the target. A one metric ton×year exposure of science data was collected between October 2016 and February 2018. This article reports on the performance of the detector during this period and describes details of the data analysis that led to the most stringent exclusion limits on various WIMP-nucleon interaction models to date. In particular, signal reconstruction, event selection, and calibration of the detector response to nuclear and electronic recoils in XENON1T are discussed.
Two-neutrino double electron capture (2νECEC) is a second-order weak-interaction process with a predicted half-life that surpasses the age of the Universe by many orders of magnitude. Until now, ...indications of 2νECEC decays have only been seen for two isotopes, 78Kr and 130Ba, and instruments with very low background levels are needed to detect them directly with high statistical significance. The 2νECEC half-life is an important observable for nuclear structure models and its measurement represents a meaningful step in the search for neutrinoless double electron capture-the detection of which would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino and would give access to the absolute neutrino mass. Here we report the direct observation of 2νECEC in 124Xe with the XENON1T dark-matter detector. The significance of the signal is 4.4 standard deviations and the corresponding half-life of 1.8 × 1022 years (statistical uncertainty, 0.5 × 1022 years; systematic uncertainty, 0.1 × 1022 years) is the longest measured directly so far. This study demonstrates that the low background and large target mass of xenon-based dark-matter detectors make them well suited for measuring rare processes and highlights the broad physics reach of larger next-generation experiments.

This paper details the first application of a software tagging algorithm to reduce radon-induced backgrounds in liquid noble element time projection chambers, such as XENON1T and XENONnT. The ...convection velocity field in XENON1T was mapped out using Rn 222 and Po 218 events, and the rms convection speed was measured to be 0.30 ± 0.01 cm / s . Given this velocity field, Pb 214 background events can be tagged when they are followed by Bi 214 and Po 214 decays, or preceded by Po 218 decays. This was achieved by evolving a point cloud in the direction of a measured convection velocity field, and searching for Bi 214 and Po 214 decays or Po 218 decays within a volume defined by the point cloud. In XENON1T, this tagging system achieved a Pb 214 background reduction of 6.2 − 0.9 + 0.4 % with an exposure loss of 1.8 ± 0.2 % , despite the timescales of convection being smaller than the relevant decay times. We show that the performance can be improved in XENONnT, and that the performance of such a software-tagging approach can be expected to be further improved in a diffusion-limited scenario. Finally, a similar method might be useful to tag the cosmogenic Xe 137 background, which is relevant to the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

The graphics accelerator structure determines the criterion of the optimal sequence of triangles in the mapping object such that the result of transformation (of transform and lighting, T&L) of the ...vertexes common for several triangles is used repeatedly as frequently as possible. The traditional procedures for progressive detailing dictate an absolutely difference sequence of triangles, which decreases the efficiency and sometimes the decrease is more sufficient than the effect from progressive detailing. A way to expand the traditional algorithm of progressive detailing that makes it possible to have a suboptimal (in terms of T&L) triangle sequence is described in the present paper.
In this work, we expand on the XENON1T nuclear recoil searches to study the individual signals of dark matter interactions from operators up to dimension eight in a chiral effective field theory ...(ChEFT) and a model of inelastic dark matter (iDM). We analyze data from two science runs of the XENON1T detector totaling 1 t × yr exposure. For these analyses, we extended the region of interest from 4.9 , 40.9 keV NR to 4.9 , 54.4 keV NR to enhance our sensitivity for signals that peak at nonzero energies. We show that the data are consistent with the background-only hypothesis, with a small background overfluctuation observed peaking between 20 and 50 keV NR , resulting in a maximum local discovery significance of 1.7 σ for the Vector ⊗ Vector strange ChEFT channel for a dark matter particle of 70 GeV / c 2 and 1.8 σ for an iDM particle of 50 GeV / c 2 with a mass splitting of 100 keV / c 2 . For each model, we report 90% confidence level upper limits. We also report upper limits on three benchmark models of dark matter interaction using ChEFT where we investigate the effect of isospin-breaking interactions. We observe rate-driven cancellations in regions of the isospin-breaking couplings, leading to up to 6 orders of magnitude weaker upper limits with respect to the isospin-conserving case. The predictions from the emanation measurements were compared to data of the 222Rn activity concentration in XENON1T. The final 222Rn activity concentration of (4.5 +/- 0.1) mu Bq/kg in the target of XENON1T is the lowest ever achieved in a xenon dark matter experiment.
We perform a blind search for particle signals in the XENON1T dark matter detector that occur close in time to gravitational-wave signals in the LIGO and Virgo observatories. No particle signal is ...observed in the nuclear recoil and electronic recoil channels within ±500 seconds of observations of the gravitational-wave signals GW170104, GW170729, GW170817, GW170818, and GW170823. We use this null result to constrain monoenergetic neutrinos and axion-like particles emitted in the closest coalescence GW170817, a binary neutron star merger. We set new upper limits on the fluence (time-integrated flux) of coincident neutrinos down to 17 keV at the 90% confidence level. Furthermore, we constrain the product of the coincident fluence and cross section of axion-like particles to be less than 10 −29 cm 2 /cm 2 in the 5.5–210 keV energy range at the 90% confidence level.
