With changes in the political and economic world order as well as in the development of foreign commercial relations of Turkey, the country’s major cities entered a process of change during the ...1980s, most notably in the location and use of some of the residential areas of Istanbul. While these areas of middle and high-income groups moved to the periphery of the city, the residences in the older and more central settlements have been frequently changing hands. Some buildings in the central areas of the city have been restored and are now used by people of upper social classes, income groups, cultures and lifestyles. This process is known as gentrification.
In this study, the gentrification process and its effects on a number of different neighborhoods in Istanbul were investigated through a desk top study and the major developments in this process were highlighted in an attempt to understand how gentrification developed in a city like Istanbul, the capital of many empires in different eras of history, and home to many nationalities and cultures. This study acknowledges that political factors as well as the economic factors affect the location of the areas which are currently experiencing gentrification.
The aim of our study is to determine important honey resources and botanical characterisation of honey in a high-altitude region of Türkiye. Natural honey samples were collected from all possible ...locations in 2017. The melissopalynological analysis identified 14 unifloral honey samples, and many plants were also determined as important sources for multifloral honey. Principal component analysis separated honey samples from low-altitude regions while high-altitude regions form a tight cluster. Pollen diversity was found to be lower in honeys at low altitudes and higher pollen diversity was found in honeys at high altitudes. Altitude plays an important role in the pollen content of the honey, with Cornus mas, Asteraceae, and Hypericum being indicator pollen types above 1500 m; Castanea sativa and Myosotis pollen were found predominant or secondary under 1100 m altitude. This has allowed the altitude preferences of some plants, which are important for beekeeping, to be associated with the location of the apiaries and, therefore, the composition of the honey.
Over time, the residential areas close to city centres have experienced change in their function and social structure. In Istanbul a functional and social change is also observed, especially in the ...residential buildings near the historical city centre. This study investigated this process of transformation through a research project conducted in the southern part of the Istanbul Historical Peninsula (old city centre) and documents the recent functional changes in this district. It also considers the role of tourism in the process of inner city transformation. On the basis of the data collected during the study, proposals are forwarded for the future development of the area.
Objective. To evaluate musculoskeletal pain (MSP) in mothers of children with cerebral palsy (CP), and to determine the effects of zone of pain on health-related quality of life (QoL) and symptoms of ...depression.
Patients and methods. The study included a total of 81 children with CP, together with their mothers (group 1), and a total of 60 healthy children, together with their mothers (group 2). Presence of MSP, and the zone of pain in mothers were evaluated lower back pain (LBP), pain in other zones, without pain. Mothers' QoL was assessed with Short Form-36 (SF-36) scale, and presence of symptoms of depression was assessed with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Multivariate analysis of variance test analysis was performed to see the main effects of the factors mother having a child with CP (group 1, group 2) and zone of pain (LBP, other, no pain) on the BDI scores and SF-36 QoL sub parameters of mothers. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the parameters predicting the presence of LBP in mothers in group 1.
Results. MSP and LBP were found to be significantly higher in group 1. Main effect of the mother having a child with CP on BDI score and physical role (PR) and mental health (MH) parameters was found to be significant. Mean BDI scores of mothers in group 1 was found to be significantly higher as compared to the other group, and mean PR parameter and MH values were found to be significantly lower. Main effect of the zone of pain (arising from the group of mothers with LBP) was found to be significant on physical functioning, bodily pain, general health perception, MH parameters and BDI. Logistic regression analysis showed that MH and bodily pain parameters significantly predicted the presence of LBP.
Conclusion. Deterioration of MH in mothers with cerebral palsied child may be causing them to experience more LBP. Experience of increased LBP causes deterioration of health-related QoL.

In recent studies on urban safety, close relationships between physical and demographic characteristics have been found in crime levels in cities. In many countries social, political and economic ...turmoil have been the main reasons for the increase in urban crime and violence in the last 50 years. In physically deprived environments, the most important factors that increase urban crime are socially isolated communities, economic discrimination and lack of equality in political citizenship rights. In developing countries, it is difficult to obtain data about crime and safety. For this reason, there are very few studies on crime compared to developed countries. In the research in this paper, the similarities and differences of crime ratios against property and persons in Istanbul are compared with those in other countries. For this purpose, the spatial distribution of crimes committed were analysed on a comparative basis between 1998-2002 in 32 districts displaying different characteristics in terms of distance to the centre, use of land, value of land, physical and demographic features. The research revealed that the crime rates in Istanbul against property and persons were in parallel with developed countries. The districts which have mixed use (residential and commercial, residential and industrial), high population increase, high number of households, high density and high land value, property and personal crime levels are high; when date of becoming a district is recent and the size of the district is large, property and personal crime levels are low.
