Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles provide powerful probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. baryons, selected from weak decays of charm baryons produced in
p
p
collisions at LHC, can be determined by studying the spin precession in the magnetic field of the detector tracking system. A test of
C
P
T
symmetry can be performed by measuring the magnetic dipole moment of
Λ
and
Λ
¯
baryons. For short-lived
Λ
c
+
and
Ξ
c
+
baryons, to be produced in a fixed-target experiment using the 7
TeV
LHC beam and channeled in a bent crystal, the spin precession is induced by the intense electromagnetic field between crystal atomic planes. The experimental layout based on the LHCb detector and the expected sensitivities in the coming years are discussed.
We propose a unique program of measurements of electric and magnetic dipole moments of charm, beauty and strange charged baryons at the LHC, based on the phenomenon of spin precession of channeled ...particles in bent crystals. Studies of crystal channeling and spin precession of positively- and negatively-charged particles are presented, along with feasibility studies and expected sensitivities for the proposed experiment using a layout based on the LHCb detector.
The Physics Beyond Colliders initiative is an exploratory study aimed at exploiting the full scientific potential of the CERN's accelerator complex and scientific infrastructures through projects ...complementary to the LHC and other possible future colliders. These projects will target fundamental physics questions in modern particle physics. This document presents the status of the proposals presented in the framework of the Beyond Standard Model physics working group, and explore their physics reach and the impact that CERN could have in the next 10-20 years on the international landscape.
One of the most important symmetries in nature is time reversal, namely, that the laws of physics remain dynamically invariant from moving forward to backward in time. Nevertheless, this symmetry can ...be broken in certain physical processes as observed in neutral B mesons by the BABAR Collaboration. Symmetry transformations have been proven a bedrock tool for understanding the nature of particle interactions, formulating, and testing fundamental theories. Based on the up to now unbroken CPT symmetry, the violation of the CP symmetry between matter and antimatter by weak interactions, discovered in the decay of kaons in 1964 and observed more recently in 2001 in mesons, strongly suggests that the behavior of these particles under weak interactions must also be asymmetric under time reversal T. The method allows a clear-cut separation of different transitions between flavor and eigenstates in the decay of neutral mesons. The results, presented in 2012, prove beyond any doubt the violation of time-reversal invariance in the time evolution between these two states of the neutral B meson.

A new vanguard–rearguard analytical method for determining 54 pesticide residues in different fruit juices (natural and commercial orange, peach and pineapple juices were tested) is proposed. For ...that, in a first step, a fast screening (vanguard) method is applied for detecting those samples containing pesticides at concentrations above a pre-established cut-off value. In a second step, those samples are re-analyzed by a conventional pesticide residue (rearguard) method that confirms the presence of the pesticides and quantifies them. The sample process is very simple, fast and semiautomatic and therefore, it reduces significantly the average time required per sample, increases precision and minimizing human mistakes. Only 1
mL of juice sample is required for analysis. Pesticides are quickly extracted with ethyl acetate in a test tube, transferred to a mixture water:acetone 9:1 (v/v), and isolated by solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The SPME screening method only requires 10
min of SPME extraction. The SPME confirming/quantifying method requires 55
min of SPME extraction. The instrumental determination is carried out by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) using a full scan acquisition mode for the screening method (less than 17
min of chromatographic run) and a tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) acquisition mode for the quantifying/confirming method (less than 70
min of chromatographic run). The use of full scan MS and tandem MS for the detection increase significantly the certainty of the results. Also, the combination of a solvent and SPME extractions and GC–MS/MS offers a significant selectivity and sensitivity with a proven reduction of false positive and negative cases. The use of a vanguard–rearguard strategy can reduce the 50% of the total time required for determining routinely juices in a laboratory by a traditional strategy (identification, confirmation and quantitation of the pesticides in the samples by a conventional analytical method).

The present study represents the first knowledge about ectoparasitic monogenoids of fishes in the Cayo Arcas reef from the Gulf of Mexico.
Helminth species of Neotropical bats are poorly known. In Mexico, few studies have been conducted on helminths of bats, especially in regions such as the Yucatan Peninsula where Chiroptera is the ...mammalian order with the greatest number of species. In this study, we characterized morphologically and molecularly the helminth species of bats and explored their infection levels and parasite–host interactions in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. One hundred and sixty-three bats (representing 21 species) were captured between 2017 and 2022 in 15 sites throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. Conventional morphological techniques and molecular tools were used with the 28S gene to identify the collected helminths. Host–parasite network analyses were carried out to explore interactions by focusing on the level of host species. Helminths were found in 44 (26.9%) bats of 12 species. Twenty helminth taxa were recorded (7 trematodes, 3 cestodes and 10 nematodes), including 4 new host records for the Americas. Prevalence and mean intensity of infection values ranged from 7.1 to 100% and from 1 to 56, respectively. Molecular analyses confirmed the identity of some helminths at species and genus levels; however, some sequences did not correspond to any of the species available on GenBank. The parasite–host network suggests that most of the helminths recorded in bats were host-specific. The highest helminth richness was found in insectivorous bats. This study increases our knowledge of helminths parasitizing Neotropical bats, adding new records and nucleotide sequences.
Extreme storms can trigger abrupt and often lasting changes in ecosystems by affecting foundational (habitat-forming) species. While the frequency and intensity of extreme events are projected to ...increase under climate change, its impacts on seagrass ecosystems remain poorly documented. In January 2020, the Spanish Mediterranean coast was hit by Storm Gloria, one of the most devastating recent climate events in terms of intensity and duration. We conducted rapid surveys of 42 Posidonia oceanica meadows across the region to evaluate the extent and type of impact (burial, unburial and uprooting). We investigated the significance of oceanographic (wave impact model), geomorphological (latitude, depth, exposure), and structural (patchiness) factors in predicting impact extent and intensity. The predominant impact of Storm Gloria was shoot unburial. More than half of the surveyed sites revealed recent unburial, with up to 40 cm of sediment removed, affecting over 50 % of the meadow. Burial, although less extensive, was still significant, with 10-80 % of meadow cover being buried under 7 cm of sediment, which is considered a survival threshold for P. oceanica. In addition, we observed evident signs of recently dead matte in some meadows and large amounts of detached drifting shoots on the sea bottom or accumulated as debris on the beaches. Crucially, exposed and patchy meadows were much more vulnerable to the overall impact than sheltered or continuous meadows. Given how slow P. oceanica is able to recover after disturbances, we state that it could take from decades to centuries for it to recoup its losses. Seagrass ecosystems play a vital role as coastal ecological infrastructure. Protecting vulnerable meadows from anthropogenic fragmentation is crucial for ensuring the resilience of these ecosystems in the face of the climate crisis.
Electromagnetic dipole moments of short-lived particles are sensitive to physics within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics but have not been accessible experimentally to date. To ...perform such measurements it has been proposed to exploit the spin precession of channeled particles in bent crystals at the LHC. Progress that enables the first measurement of charm baryon dipole moments is reported. In particular, the design and characterization on beam of silicon and germanium bent crystal prototypes, the optimization of the experimental setup, and advanced analysis techniques are discussed. Sensitivity studies show that first measurements of Λc+ and Ξc+ baryon dipole moments can be performed in two years of data taking with an experimental setup positioned upstream of the LHCb detector.
