The shower simulation code CORSIKA has been used to investigate the electron energy and angular distributions in high-energy showers. Based on the universality of both distributions, we develop an ...analytical description of Cherenkov light emission in extensive air showers, which provides the total number and angular distribution of photons. The parameterisation can be used e.g. to calculate the contribution of direct and scattered Cherenkov light to shower profiles measured with the air fluorescence technique.

New Cherenkov photon detectors are being developed for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The detectors are based on THGEMs, arranged in a three layer architecture, with a CsI film on the first layer ...acting as a reflective photocathode. The response of THGEMs with various geometries under different conditions has been studied and photon detector prototypes have been built, tested in laboratory and operated during test beam runs providing a typical gain of 105 and a time resolution of better than 10ns. A photon detector prototype with 300×300mm2 active area, operated at the CERN PS T10 test beam in November 2012, has confirmed the validity of this novel technology and has allowed further studies of the detector response.
•The COMPASS THGEM R&D team has performed systematic studies and parameter optimization for THGEMs to be used in RICH applications.•A triple-THGEM photon detector with 300×300mm2 active area has been successfully tested at the CERN PS T10 test-beam.•A photon detector prototype based on coupling THGEM and Micromegas has provided encouraging results in laboratory tests.•For the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1 a set of THGEM-based photon detectors will be produced.

We are developing a single photon detector for Cherenkov imaging counters. This detector is based on the use of THGEM electron multipliers in a multilayer design. The major goals of our project are ...ion feedback suppression down to a few per cent, large gain, fast response, insensitivity to magnetic fields, and a large detector size.
We report about the project status and perspectives. In particular, we present a systematic study of the THGEM response as a function of geometrical parameters, production techniques and the gas mixture composition. The first figures obtained from measuring the response of a CsI coated THGEM to single photons are presented.

The novel and robust Thick GEM (THGEM) electron multiplier, coupled to a solid state photon converter, represents a promising option for instrumenting, at affordable costs, large areas with photon ...detectors, in particular, in Cherenkov imaging counters where single photons must be detected with high efficiency. The main goal of our project is to demonstrate the feasibility of reliable gaseous detector of single photons based on the use of THGEM multipliers, able to stably operate at high gain and high rate and to build and validate a large size prototype of such a detector. The project status and perspectives are reported; in particular attention is dedicated to the simulation and laboratory studies performed to understand the photo-electron extraction performance attainable using a solid state coated photo-cathode film onto a THGEM substrate.
We report a study of the processes of e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}D_{s}^{-}D^{*0} and K^{+}D_{s}^{*-}D^{0} based on e^{+}e^{-} annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five ...center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb^{-1}. An excess of events over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the D_{s}^{-}D^{*0} and D_{s}^{*-}D^{0} mass thresholds in the K^{+} recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at sqrts=4.681 GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as (3982.5_{-2.6}^{+1.8}±2.1) MeV/c^{2} and (12.8_{-4.4}^{+5.3}±3.0) MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 σ over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate for a charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into D_{s}^{-}D^{*0} and D_{s}^{*-}D^{0}. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.
Particles directly produced at electron–positron colliders, such as the J/ψ meson, decay with relatively high probability into a baryon–antibaryon pair1. For spin-1/2 baryons, the pair can have the ...same or opposite helicites. A non-vanishing phase ΔΦ between the transition amplitudes to these helicity states results in a transverse polarization of the baryons2–4. From the joint angular distribution of the decay products of the baryons, this phase as well as the parameters characterizing the baryon and the antibaryon decays can be determined. Here, we report the measurement of ΔΦ = 42.4 ± 0.6 ± 0.5° using Λ → pπ− and Λ¯→p¯π+,n¯π0 decays at BESIII. We find a value for the Λ → pπ− decay parameter of α− = 0.750 ± 0.009 ± 0.004, 17 ± 3% higher than the current world average, which has been used as input for all Λ polarization measurements since 19785,6. For Λ¯→p¯π+ we find α+ = −0.758 ± 0.010 ± 0.007, giving ACP = (α− + α+)/(α− − α+) = −0.006 ± 0.012 ± 0.007, a precise direct test of charge–parity symmetry (CP) violation in Λ decays.The decay asymmetry and helicity phase of polarized baryon–antibaryon pairs are measured at the BESIII experiment, testing charge–parity symmetry and revealing a discrepancy of the Λ → pπ− decay asymmetry with respect to the current world average.
The cross section for the process e^{+}e^{-}→π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ is measured precisely at center-of-mass energies from 3.77 to 4.60 GeV using 9 fb^{-1} of data collected with the BESIII detector operating ...at the BEPCII storage ring. Two resonant structures are observed in a fit to the cross section. The first resonance has a mass of (4222.0±3.1±1.4) MeV/c^{2} and a width of (44.1±4.3±2.0) MeV, while the second one has a mass of (4320.0±10.4±7.0) MeV/c^{2} and a width of (101.4_{-19.7}^{+25.3}±10.2) MeV, where the first errors are statistical and second ones are systematic. The first resonance agrees with the Y(4260) resonance reported by previous experiments. The precision of its resonant parameters is improved significantly. The second resonance is observed in e^{+}e^{-}→π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ for the first time. The statistical significance of this resonance is estimated to be larger than 7.6σ. The mass and width of the second resonance agree with the Y(4360) resonance reported by the BABAR and Belle experiments within errors. Finally, the Y(4008) resonance previously observed by the Belle experiment is not confirmed in the description of the BESIII data.
We report on the measurement of the γp→J/ψp cross section from E_{γ}=11.8 GeV down to the threshold at 8.2 GeV using a tagged photon beam with the GlueX experiment. We find that the total cross ...section falls toward the threshold less steeply than expected from two-gluon exchange models. The differential cross section dσ/dt has an exponential slope of 1.67±0.39 GeV^{-2} at 10.7 GeV average energy. The LHCb pentaquark candidates P_{c}^{+} can be produced in the s channel of this reaction. We see no evidence for them and set model-dependent upper limits on their branching fractions B(P_{c}^{+}→J/ψp) and cross sections σ(γp→P_{c}^{+})×B(P_{c}^{+}→J/ψp).
