The energies of silver (Ag) atoms in Ag nanoparticles supported on different cerium and magnesium oxide surfaces, determined from previous calorimetrìe measurements of metal adsorption energies, were ...analyzed with respect to particle size. Their stability was found to increase with particle size below 5000 atoms per particle. Silver nanoparticles of any given size below 1000 atoms had much higher stability (30 to 70 kilojoules per mole of silver atoms) on reduced CeO₂(111) than on MgO(100). This effect is the result of the very large adhesion energy (-2.3 joules per square meter) of Ag nanoparticles to reduced CeO₂(111), which we found to be a result of strong bonding to both defects and CeO₂(111) terraces, apparently localized by lattice strain. These results explain the unusual sinter resistance of late transition metal catalysts when supported on ceria.
When we read or listen to language, we are faced with the challenge of inferring intended messages from noisy input. This challenge is exacerbated by considerable variability between and within ...speakers. Focusing on syntactic processing (parsing), we test the hypothesis that language comprehenders rapidly adapt to the syntactic statistics of novel linguistic environments (e.g., speakers or genres). Two self-paced reading experiments investigate changes in readers' syntactic expectations based on repeated exposure to sentences with temporary syntactic ambiguities (so-called "garden path sentences"). These sentences typically lead to a clear expectation violation signature when the temporary ambiguity is resolved to an a priori less expected structure (e.g., based on the statistics of the lexical context). We find that comprehenders rapidly adapt their syntactic expectations to converge towards the local statistics of novel environments. Specifically, repeated exposure to a priori unexpected structures can reduce, and even completely undo, their processing disadvantage (Experiment 1). The opposite is also observed: a priori expected structures become less expected (even eliciting garden paths) in environments where they are hardly ever observed (Experiment 2). Our findings suggest that, when changes in syntactic statistics are to be expected (e.g., when entering a novel environment), comprehenders can rapidly adapt their expectations, thereby overcoming the processing disadvantage that mistaken expectations would otherwise cause. Our findings take a step towards unifying insights from research in expectation-based models of language processing, syntactic priming, and statistical learning.
The purpose of this review was to evaluate factors in early childhood (≤5 years of age) that are the most significant predictors of the development of obesity in adulthood. Factors of interest ...included exposures/insults in the prenatal period, infancy and early childhood, as well as other socio‐demographic variables such as socioeconomic status (SES) or birth place that could impact all three time periods. An extensive electronic and systematic search initially resulted in 8,880 citations, after duplicates were removed. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were set, and following two screening processes, 135 studies were retained for detailed abstraction and analysis. A total of 42 variables were associated with obesity in adulthood; however, of these, only seven variables may be considered as potential early markers of obesity based on the reported associations. Possible early markers of obesity included maternal smoking and maternal weight gain during pregnancy. Probable early markers of obesity included maternal body mass index, childhood growth patterns (early rapid growth and early adiposity rebound), childhood obesity and father's employment (a proxy measure for SES in many studies). Health promotion programmes/agencies should consider these factors as reasonable targets to reduce the risk of adult obesity.
A single, subanesthetic dose of (R,S)-ketamine (ketamine) exerts rapid and robust antidepressant effects. Several groups previously reported that (2S,6S;2R,6R)-hydroxynorketamine (HNK) had ...antidepressant effects in rodents, and that (2R,6R)-HNK increased cortical electroencephalographic gamma power. This exploratory study examined the relationship between ketamine metabolites, clinical response, psychotomimetic symptoms, and gamma power changes in 34 individuals (ages 18-65) with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) who received a single ketamine infusion (0.5 mg/kg) over 40 min. Plasma concentrations of ketamine, norketamine, and HNKs were measured at 40, 80, 120, and 230 min and at 1, 2, and 3 days post-infusion. Linear mixed models evaluated ketamine metabolites as mediators of antidepressant and psychotomimetic effects and their relationship to resting-state whole-brain magnetoencephalography (MEG) gamma power 6-9 h post-infusion. Three salient findings emerged. First, ketamine concentration positively predicted distal antidepressant response at Day 11 post-infusion, and an inverse relationship was observed between (2S,6S;2R,6R)-HNK concentration and antidepressant response at 3 and 7 days post-infusion. Norketamine concentration was not associated with antidepressant response. Second, ketamine, norketamine, and (2S,6S;2R,6R)-HNK concentrations at 40 min were positively associated with contemporaneous psychotomimetic symptoms; post-hoc analysis revealed that ketamine was the predominant contributor. Third, increased (2S,6S;2R,6R)-HNK maximum observed concentration (C
) was associated with increased MEG gamma power. While contrary to preclinical observations and our a priori hypotheses, these exploratory results replicate those of a recently published study documenting a relationship between higher (2S,6S;2R,6R)-HNK concentrations and weaker antidepressant response in humans and provide further rationale for studying gamma power changes as potential biomarkers of antidepressant response.
Background
Concerns have been raised that scores on standard measures of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms may differ as a function of sex. However, these findings are hindered by small female ...samples studied thus far. The current study evaluated if, after accounting for age, IQ, and language level, sex affects ASD severity estimates from diagnostic measures among children with ASD.
Methods
Data were obtained from eight sources comprising 27 sites. Linear mixed‐effects models, including a random effect for site, were fit for 10 outcomes (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule ADOS domain‐level calibrated severity scores, Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised ADI‐R raw scores by age‐based algorithm, and raw scores from the two indices on the Social Responsiveness Scale SRS). Sex was added to the models after controlling for age, NVIQ, and an indicator for language level.
Results
Sex significantly improved model fit for half of the outcomes, but least square mean differences were generally negligible (effect sizes ES < 0.20), increasing to small to moderate in adolescence (ES < 0.40). Boys received more severe RRB scores than girls on both the ADOS and ADI‐R (age 4 + algorithm), and girls received more severe scores than boys on both SRS indices, which emerged in adolescence.
Conclusions
This study combined several available databases to create the largest sample of girls with ASD diagnoses. We found minimal differences due to sex beyond other known influences on ASD severity indicators. This may suggest that, among children who ultimately receive a clinical ASD diagnosis, severity estimates do not systematically differ to such an extent that sex‐specific scoring procedures would be necessary. However, given the limitations inherent in clinically ascertained samples, future research must address questions about systematic sex differences among children or adults who do not receive clinical diagnoses of ASD. Moreover, while the current study helps resolve questions about widely used diagnostic instruments, we could not address sex differences in phenotypic aspects outside of these scores.

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory disease. Studies suggest that pro-inflammatory cytokines may be attenuated by the vagus nerve through the cholinergic ...anti-inflammatory pathway. We aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of short-term transcutaneous non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (n-VNS) applied to the cervical vagus nerve in patients with RA.
Method: We conducted a single-centre, open-label, preliminary proof-of-concept study of n-VNS in two cohorts of participants with RA: one with high disease activity (n = 16) and one with low disease activity (n = 20). Disease Activity Score based on 28-joint count-C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP), cardiac vagal tone, and pro-inflammatory cytokines were measured at baseline and after 1 and 4 days of n-VNS.
Results: In the high disease activity group, n-VNS resulted in reductions in DAS28-CRP (4.1 to 3.8, p = 0.02), CRP (8.2 to 6 mg/mL, p = 0.01), and interferon-γ (29.8 to 22.5 pg/mL, p = 0.02). In the low disease activity group, there was no effect on DAS28-CRP, and n-VNS was associated with a decrease in cardiac vagal tone (p = 0.03) and a reduction in interleukin-10 (0.8 to 0.6 pg/mL, p = 0.02). Participants with high disease activity had lower baseline cardiac vagal tone than those with low disease activity (3.6 ± 2 vs 4.9 ± 3 linear vagal scale, p = 0.03). Cardiac vagal tone was negatively associated with DAS28-CRP (r = −0.37, p = 0.03). Overall, n-VNS was well tolerated.
Conclusion: This study provides preliminary support for an anti-inflammatory effect of n-VNS in patients with RA. These findings warrant further investigation in larger placebo-controlled trials.
Queen conch are among the most economically, socially, and culturally important fishery resources in the Caribbean. Despite a multitude of fisheries management measures enacted across the region, ...populations are depleted and failing to recover. It is believed that queen conch are highly susceptible to depensatory processes, impacting reproductive success and contributing to the lack of recovery. We developed a model of reproductive dynamics to evaluate how variations in biological factors such as population density, movement speeds, rest periods between mating events, scent tracking, visual perception of conspecifics, sexual facilitation, and barriers to movement affect reproductive success and overall reproductive output. We compared simulation results to empirical observations of mating and spawning frequencies from conch populations in the central Bahamas and Florida Keys. Our results confirm that low probability of mate finding associated with decreased population density is the primary driver behind observed breeding behavior in the field, but is insufficient to explain observed trends. Specifically, sexual facilitation coupled with differences in movement speeds and ability to perceive conspecifics may explain the observed lack of mating at low densities and differences between mating frequencies in the central Bahamas and Florida Keys, respectively. Our simulations suggest that effective management strategies for queen conch should aim to protect high-density reproductive aggregations and critical breeding habitats.
Syntactic factors can rapidly affect behavioral and neural responses during language processing; however, the mechanisms that allow this rapid extraction of syntactically relevant information remain ...poorly understood. We addressed this issue using magnetoencephalography and found that an unexpected word category (e. g., "The recently princess . . . ") elicits enhanced activity in visual cortex as early as 120 ms after exposure, and that this activity occurs as a function of the compatibility of a word's form with the form properties associated with a predicted word category. Because no sensitivity to linguistic factors has been previously reported for words in isolation at this stage of visual analysis, we propose that predictions about upcoming syntactic categories are translated into form-based estimates, which are made available to sensory cortices. This finding may be a key component to elucidating the mechanisms that allow the extreme rapidity and efficiency of language comprehension.

Background
Irritable bowel syndrome is a widespread disorder with a marked socioeconomic burden. Previous studies support the proposal that a subset of patients with features compatible with ...diarrhoea‐predominant IBS (IBS‐D) have bile acid malabsorption (BAM).
Aim
To perform a systematic review and meta‐analysis to assess the prevalence of BAM in patients meeting the accepted criteria for IBS‐D.
Methods
MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched up to March 2015. Studies recruiting adults with IBS‐D, defined by the Manning, Kruis, Rome I, II or III criteria and which used 23‐seleno‐25‐homotaurocholic acid (SeHCAT) testing for the assessment of BAM were included. BAM was defined as 7 day SeHCAT retention of <10%. We calculated the rate of BAM and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using a random effects model. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated using the Quality Assessment for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS‐2).
Results
The search strategy identified six relevant studies comprising 908 individuals. The rate of BAM ranged from 16.9% to 35.3%. The pooled rate was 28.1% (95% CI: 22.6–34%). There was significant heterogeneity in effect sizes (Q‐test χ2 = 17.9, P < 0.004; I2 = 72.1%). The type of diagnostic criteria used or study country did not significantly modify the effect.
Conclusions
These data provide evidence that in excess of one quarter of patients meeting accepted criteria for IBS‐D have bile acid malabsorption. This distinction has implications for the interpretation of previous studies, as well as contemporaneous clinical practice and future guideline development.
