Trypanosoma cruzi seroprevalence data and entomological sampling indicates that while the programme successfully reduced the annual incidence of infection from approximately ten per 1000 people in the 1950s to one per 1000 in the 1980s, in the susceptible population of endemic areas, transmission has not yet been interrupted and could now be increasing. Andean governments can expect control to be highly effective, but must maintain long-term vigilance and targeted control measures to consolidate these gains.

Phlebotomine sandflies were surveyed in two ecologically contrasted areas, the northern moist and southern wet tropical forests, of the Territorio Federal Amazonas, Venezuela. Three new taxa and ...twenty-one new records were added to the previously known species list for Venezuelan sandflies, which now totals eighty species. Both sexes of Lutzomyia (Psychodopygus) killicki sp.n., L. (Trichophoryomyia) bettinii sp.n., L. (Nyssomyia) olmeca reducta subsp.n. and and the females of L. bernalei Osorno et al., Brumptomyia pintoi Costa Lima and L. begonae (Ortiz & Torres) are described and illustrated.
The structure of the mature spermatozoa of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) (Diptera, Psychodidae) was examined by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The spermatozoon was found ...to have an elongated head and a tail. The head was characterized by an acrosomal complex with a plug containing fine, granular, presumably subacrosomal material constituting the perforatorium. The tail had a 9 + 9 + 0 axoneme and one partially crystallized mitochondrial derivative. The spermatozoon ultrastructure of L. longipalpis was compared with that of other Diptera, particularly Psychodidae.
Se analizan los factores que interfieren en la esterilidad inducida químicamente en R. Prolixus mediante aplicaciones tópicas en distintas dosis de metepa. Se sugiere profundizar el estudio de la ...susceptibilidad individual para conocer la composición de la población frente al quimioesterilizante y la probable aparición de resistencia. Se investiga además la acción del metepa sobre T. cruzi en triatominos infectados experimentalmente, obteniéndose resultados negativos.
The factors that interfere with the chemosterilization of R. prolixus, when metepa is applied topically, are analysed. It is suggested that similar studies, based on individual fertility of insects, be periodically made to detect the appearance of resistance in triatominae populations. Data with indicates that metepa has no effect on T. cruzi when R. prolixus were infected with the parasite after chemosterilization, are presented.
Analisaram-se os fatores que intervêm na esterilidade induzida quimicamente em R. prolixus, mediante aplicações tópicas de metepa em várias doses. Sugere-se a realização de investigações mais profundas sobre a suscetibilidade individual, objetivando o conhecimento da composição populacional em contato com o quimioesterilizante e o provável aparecimento da resistência. Investigou-se também a ação de metepa sobre T. cruzi em triatomineos infectados experimentalmente, com resultados negativos.
