Vitamin A (all-
-retinol) is a fat-soluble micronutrient which together with its natural derivatives and synthetic analogues constitutes the group of retinoids. They are involved in a wide range of ...physiological processes such as embryonic development, vision, immunity and cellular differentiation and proliferation. Retinoic acid (RA) is the main active form of vitamin A and multiple genes respond to RA signalling through transcriptional and non-transcriptional mechanisms. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a remarkable public health problem. An adequate vitamin A intake is required in early lung development, alveolar formation, tissue maintenance and regeneration. In fact, chronic VAD has been associated with histopathological changes in the pulmonary epithelial lining that disrupt the normal lung physiology predisposing to severe tissue dysfunction and respiratory diseases. In addition, there are important alterations of the structure and composition of extracellular matrix with thickening of the alveolar basement membrane and ectopic deposition of collagen I. In this review, we show our recent findings on the modification of cell-junction proteins in VAD lungs, summarize up-to-date information related to the effects of chronic VAD in the impairment of lung physiology and pulmonary disease which represent a major global health problem and provide an overview of possible pathways involved.
Aim
This study aimed to summarise the views and experiences of the participants in the workshop of the XIII International Conference on Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC).
Methods
The results of the ...discussions held during the workshop of the XIII International Conference on KMC were summarised. There were 152 participants from 47 countries. Four main KMC topics were discussed: good practices, immediate implementation, nutrition and basic ventilation.
Results
Several agreements were reached, namely that professional societies and governments should develop official recommendations to promote KMC as standard care for preterm and low birth weight infants and that parents should be involved as active caregivers in neonatal care units. Moreover, the criteria for referring community‐born infants to KMC require standardisation.
Important inequalities in resource availability among high‐, middle‐ and low‐income countries were recognised for all topics. Specific needs were identified for parenteral nutrition and fortifiers, nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) and oxygen blenders, which are rarely available in low‐ and middle‐income countries.
Immediate implementation of KMC was discussed as a new concept. Its benefits were recognised, but its application has some variability.
Conclusion
Adequate preterm care requires a basic neonatal package, including KMC, nCPAP, immediate management protocols and adequate nutrition and feeding strategies. The differences in resources among high‐, middle‐ and low‐income countries highlight the wide disparities in neonatal care according to the place of birth.
The objective of this research is to study the use in the construction industry of recycled slag (SL) and fly ash (FA) using from 0.1 to 5% calcium sulfate (wCS¯). These wastes have been used to make ...ternary mixture systems and evaluated in terms of technological properties as cementitious materials for building applications. Studying their micro-structure as hydration products, setting times and mechanical properties shows a way to develop new mixtures from high proportion of waste, which are alternatives to the traditional nature ternary systems: Portland cement (PC), calcium aluminate cement (CAC) and calcium sulphate (CS¯). Based on previous work with natural products, the selected SL/FA ratios were 9 and 2.3 and the sulphate contents were 0, 1 and 5%. The water/binder ratio used for these cementitious mixes was 0.4. The specimens prepared for strength determination were prisms of 10 × 10 × 60 mm. The pastes were prepared and cured at 20 °C and 98% relative humidity for 1 day and then either stored at 20 °C at 98% humidity (dry) or immersed in distilled water (wet) for 14 and 28 days. The results showed that both FA and SL mixed with CS¯ produce ettringite after 28 days of setting, and this phase was the main crystalline hydrated product in all mixes. Calcium sulphate stimulates the hydration reactions of the mixes and the strength increases when the CS¯ content is higher due to ettringite formation, while the setting time decreases, as happened in the systems prepared with natural materials.
Atremorine is a novel bioproduct obtained by nondenaturing biotechnological processes from a genetic species of Vicia faba. Atremorine is a potent dopamine (DA) enhancer with powerful effects on the ...neuronal dopaminergic system, acting as a neuroprotective agent in Parkinson's disease (PD). Over 97% of PD patients respond to a single dose of Atremorine (5 g, p.o.) 1 h after administration. This response is gender‐, time‐, dose‐, and genotype‐dependent, with optimal doses ranging from 5 to 20 g/day, depending upon disease severity and concomitant medication. Drug‐free patients show an increase in DA levels from 12.14 ± 0.34 pg/ml to 6463.21 ± 1306.90 pg/ml; and patients chronically treated with anti‐PD drugs show an increase in DA levels from 1321.53 ± 389.94 pg/ml to 16,028.54 ± 4783.98 pg/ml, indicating that Atremorine potentiates the dopaminergic effects of conventional anti‐PD drugs. Atremorine also influences the levels of other neurotransmitters (adrenaline, noradrenaline) and hormones which are regulated by DA (e.g., prolactin, PRL), with no effect on serotonin or histamine. The variability in Atremorine‐induced DA response is highly attributable to pharmacogenetic factors. Polymorphic variants in pathogenic (SNCA, NUCKS1, ITGA8, GPNMB, GCH1, BCKDK, APOE, LRRK2, ACMSD), mechanistic (DRD2), metabolic (CYP2D6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP3A4/5, NAT2), transporter (ABCB1, SLC6A2, SLC6A3, SLC6A4) and pleiotropic genes (APOE) influence the DA response to Atremorine and its psychomotor and brain effects. Atremorine enhances DNA methylation and displays epigenetic activity via modulation of the pharmacoepigenetic network. Atremorine is a novel neuroprotective agent for dopaminergic neurons with potential prophylactic and therapeutic activity in PD.
In this work, the dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) of melatonin using graphene (G) mixtures with sepiolite (SEP) and bentonite (BEN) clays as sorbents combined with fluorescence detection has ...been investigated. The retention was found to be quantitative for both G/SEP and G/BEN 4/96 and 10/90 w/w mixtures. G/clay 4/96 w/w mixtures were selected to study the desorption process since the retention was weaker, thus leading to easier desorption. MeOH and aqueous solutions of the nonionic surfactant Brij L23 were tested as desorbents. For both clays and an initial sample volume of 25 mL, a percentage of melatonin recovery close to 100% was obtained using 10 or 25 mL of MeOH as desorbent. Further, using a G/SEP mixture, 25 mL as the initial sample volume and 5 mL of MeOH or 60 mM Brij L23 solution as the desorbent, recoveries of 98.3% and 90% were attained, respectively. The whole method was applied to herbal tea samples containing melatonin, and the percentage of agreement with the labeled value was 86.5%. It was also applied to herbal samples without melatonin by spiking them with two concentrations of this compound, leading to recoveries of 100 and 102%.
Reading acquisition is based on a set of preliteracy skills that lay the foundation for future reading abilities. Phonological awareness-the ability to identify and manipulate the sound units of oral ...language-has been reported to play a central role in reading acquisition. However, current evidence is mixed with respect to its universal contribution to reading acquisition across orthographies. This longitudinal study examines the development and contribution of phonological awareness to early reading skills in Spanish, a transparent orthography. The results of a comprehensive battery of phonological awareness skills in a large sample of children (Time 1 n = 616, 296 females, mean age 5.6, from middle to high socioeconomic backgrounds; Time 2 n = 397) with no reading experience at study onset suggest that the development of phonological awareness is delayed in Spanish. Furthermore, our results show that phonological awareness does not contribute to the prediction of reading acquisition above and beyond other preliteracy skills. Letter knowledge indexes children's ability to identify phonemes and thus takes a more central role in the prediction of early reading skills. Therefore, we underscore the need to thoughtfully address the distinctive features of the reading acquisition process across orthographies, which should be taken into account in models of reading and learning to read.
Natural killer group 2D (NKG2D) is a natural killer (NK) cell-activating receptor that recognizes different stress-induced ligands that are overexpressed in a variety of childhood and adult tumors. ...NKG2D chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have shown potent anticancer effects against different cancer types. A second-generation NKG2D CAR was generated by fusing full-length human NKG2D to 4-1BB costimulatory molecule and CD3ζ signaling domain. Patient-derived CAR T cells show limitations including inability to manufacture CAR T cells from the patients' own T cells, disease progression, and death prior to return of engineered cells. The use of allogeneic T cells for CAR therapy could be an attractive alternative, although undesirable graft vs. host reactions may occur. To avoid such adverse effects, we used CD45RA
memory T cells, a T-cell subset with less alloreactivity, as effector cells to express NKG2D CAR. In this study, we developed a protocol to obtain large-scale NKG2D CAR memory T cells for clinical use by using CliniMACS Prodigy, an automated closed system compliant with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines. cells were cultured in TexMACS media supplemented with 100 IU/mL IL-2 and activated at day 0 with T Cell TransAct. Then, we used NKG2D-CD8TM-4-1BB-CD3ζ lentiviral vector for cell transduction (MOI = 2). NKG2D CAR T cells expanded between 10 and 13 days. Final cell products were analyzed to comply with the specifications derived from the quality and complementary controls carried out in accordance with the instructions of the Spanish Regulatory Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) for the manufacture of investigational advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs). We performed four validations. The manufacturing protocol here described achieved large numbers of viable NKG2D CAR memory T cells with elevated levels of NKG2D CAR expression and highly cytotoxic against Jurkat and 531MII tumor target cells. CAR T cell final products met release criteria, except for one showing
overexpression and another with viral copy number higher than five. Manufacturing of clinical-grade NKG2D CAR memory T cells using CliniMACS Prodigy is feasible and reproducible, widening clinical application of CAR T cell therapies.
The purpose of this paper is to compare disagreement in two different WhatsApp groups: one for members of the same family, and another for work colleagues. After the analysis, 427 instances of ...disagreement were identified in the family group, and 161 in the interactions between work colleagues. The most common strategy in both corpora is ‘Giving opposite opinions’. Nevertheless, the rest of the results present very significant dissimilarities, most notably the higher presence of disagreement in the family WhatsApp group. This higher tolerance for disagreement is corroborated by the choice of linguistic strategies made. Whereas the family members tended to give emotional or personal reasons for disagreement, as well as negative comments on the topic, the colleagues preferred to express their disagreement with mitigating expressions and token agreement. Thus, in the corpora studied, the expression of disagreement seems to be less face threatening for family members than for work colleagues.
Throughout history, humans have consistently developed strategies to prevent food-associated illnesses. However, despite our multiple technological advances, food safety is still an issue of concern. ...Moreover, there is a demand for gaining access to less processed and naturally preserved food. Food biopreservation, understood as the use of natural antimicrobials already present in food with a long history of safe consumption, is seen as a plausible strategy to reduce the intensity of current preservation technologies (e.g., presence of chemically synthesized food preservatives). In that sense, the combined use of several antimicrobial strategies, known as hurdle technology, has been often chosen as a means to improve the efficacy of food biopreservation. This review intends to summarize the most recent examples of the combined use of bacteriocins and bacteriophages to extend food shelf-life and reduce the risks associated with the presence of foodborne bacteria along the food chain. However, while the efficacy of bacteriocins has been extensively documented, bacteriophages have only started to be assessed as potential food biopreservatives more recently. Within this context, we would like to consider whether these two types of natural antimicrobials would help each other to overcome bottlenecks in food biopreservation.
•Bacteriocins and bacteriophages are natural antimicrobials commonly present in food.•They allow inhibiting the growth of several pathogenic bacteria along the food chain.•The hurdle technology combining bacteriocins and bacteriophages would overcome some drawbacks of their individual use.•The application of these biopreservatives is dependent on their acceptability and approval.

SiC varistors are employed as surge arrestors in high power/high energy niche applications. Using a model formulation based on 50 % SiC and 50 % clay plus graphite, the effects of SiC grain size, composition and graphite content were investigated. Disc and toroidal samples were sintered at 1130 °C under a reducing atmosphere; products were ∼70–75 % dense. The main phases detected by SEM and XRD were SiC, SiO2 (quartz), mullite, graphite and porosity. With increasing graphite content (zero to 11 wt%) the non-linear coefficient (α) decreased from 5.9 to 2.7, the breakdown field Eb decreased from 3346 to 36 V cm−1, and bulk electrical resistivity fell by three orders of magnitude. As SiC grain size reduced from 120 μm to 10 μm, non-linear coefficients (α) almost doubled (3.7–6.3) and breakdown field (Eb) increased by an order of magnitude (226–2656 V cm−1) as a result of increasing numbers of resistive grain boundaries between the device electrodes. The impurity content of SiC grains had a modest impact on electrical properties. The resistance of grain boundary regions was typically one to two orders of magnitude larger than that of grain cores.
