In our search for new neuroprotective agents for stroke therapy to improve the pharmacological profile of the compound quinolylnitrone QN23, we have prepared and studied sixteen new, related and ...easily available quinolylnitrones. As a result, we have identified compounds QN4 and QN15 as promising candidates showing high neuroprotection power in a cellular experimental model of ischemia. Even though they were found to be less active than our current lead compound QN23, QN4 and QN15 provide an improved potency and, particularly for QN4, an expanded range of tolerability and improved solubility compared to the parent compound. A computational DFT-based analysis has been carried out to understand the antioxidant power of quinolylnitrones QN23, QN4 and QN15. Altogether, these results show that subtle, simple modifications of the quinolylnitrone scaffold are tolerated, providing high neuroprotective activity and optimization of the pharmacological potency required for an improved design and future drug developments in the field.
This is the first study to empirically evaluate the mortality of Amblyomma mixtum larvae caused by native entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) from cattle farm soils and the impact of the physicochemical ...conditions of those soils on the ability of EPF to kill ticks. The efficacy of 25 EPF strains isolated from cattle farms soils in Veracruz, Mexico, against A. mixtum ticks was evaluated using a larval immersion test. Physicochemical analyses of the soils where the EPF were isolated were carried out, and the results were correlated with the obtained mortality. The MaV25 strain showed a mortality of 36.55% (P < 0.05), followed by MaV57 with 27.30%, MaV08 with 26.21%, and MaV31 with 24.32% (P < 0.05). Nitrogen and potassium are nutritional components of soils that seem to be associated with mortality caused by the evaluated fungal strains. This is the first study in Mexico where the effect of EPF against A. mixtum is evaluated and also is the first study in the world that uses native strains from livestock soils against larvae of this tick. It is necessary to determine the virulence characteristics of EPF on A. mixtum to improve knowledge of fungus–tick interactions (Metarhizium anisopliae–A. mixtum).

This work describes the development of a fully integrated Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) microreactor for the synthesis of carbon dots (CDots). The microreactor integrates fluidics, a heating resistor and an optical window for fluorescence imaging of the reaction progress in a monolithic, all ceramic device, ensuring homogeneous surface chemistry and physical properties. A pool of different CDots was synthesized at high temperature and pressure using a hydrothermal method, demonstrating the robustness of the microreactor. The synthesis was monitored by following the photoluminescence of the produced CDots, and the reaction conditions were optimized according to their Quantum Yield (QY) and the flow pattern inside the microchannel. The obtained CDots exhibited blue photoluminescence upon irradiation with UV light with QYs of up to 0.77. The CDots were screened as metal nanoprobes and bioimaging contrast agents.
Abstract
The radio galaxy M87 is the central dominant galaxy of the Virgo Cluster. Very high-energy (VHE, ≳0.1 TeV) emission from M87 has been detected by imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. Recently, ...marginal evidence for VHE long-term emission has also been observed by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory, a gamma-ray and cosmic-ray detector array located in Puebla, Mexico. The mechanism that produces VHE emission in M87 remains unclear. This emission originates in its prominent jet, which has been spatially resolved from radio to X-rays. In this paper, we construct a spectral energy distribution from radio to gamma rays that is representative of the nonflaring activity of the source, and in order to explain the observed emission, we fit it with a lepto-hadronic emission model. We found that this model is able to explain nonflaring VHE emission of M87 as well as an orphan flare reported in 2005.
We have previously reported the ability of chitosan nanocapsules to enhance and prolong the oral absorption of peptides. In the present work, our goal was to design a new type of nanocapsules, using ...chitosan chemically modified with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (0.5% and 1% pegylation degree) and to investigate the consequences of this modification on the in vitro and in vivo behaviour of the nanocapsules. Chitosan-PEG nanocapsules and the control PEG-coated nanoemulsions were obtained by the solvent displacement technique. Their size was in the range of 160-250 nm. Their zeta potential was greatly affected by the nature of the coating, being positive for chitosan-PEG nanocapsules and negative in the case of PEG-coated nanoemulsions. The presence of PEG, whether alone or grafted to chitosan, improved the stability of the nanocapsules in the gastrointestinal fluids. Using the Caco-2 model cell line it was observed that the pegylation of chitosan reduced the cytotoxicity of the nanocapsules. In addition, these nanocapsules did not cause a significant change in the transepithelial resistance of the monolayer. Finally, the results of the in vivo studies showed the capacity of chitosan-PEG nanocapsules to enhance and prolong the intestinal absorption of salmon calcitonin. Additionally, they indicated that the pegylation degree affected the in vivo performance of the nanocapsules. Therefore, by modulating the pegylation degree of chitosan, it was possible to obtain nanocapsules with a good stability, a low cytotoxicity and with absorption enhancing properties.
The corrosion behaviour of AZ31 magnesium alloy with different grain sizes immersed in simulated body fluids was compared in chloride solution (8

−1) and in phosphate-buffer solution (PBS). The ...influence of immersion time was also analyzed. Electrochemical techniques such as open circuit potential, polarization curves, transient currents and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, complemented with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, were used. Immediately after the immersion in the corrosive media the corrosion resistance was similar for both grain sizes of the AZ31 alloy and higher in NaCl solutions than in PBS. However, this corrosion behaviour was reversed after longer periods of immersion due to the stabilizing of the corrosion products of MgO by P-containing compounds. These P-compounds contribute to a higher level of protection by hindering the aggressive action of chloride ions. The best corrosion behaviour of the AZ31 alloy was obtained for the finest grain alloy associated with the highest transfer resistance value, after long periods of immersion in PBS.
We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess whether telomerase activity and telomere length are associated with breast cancer.
PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, LILACS, Scielo, Embase, ...and CNKI databases were searched to obtain relevant articles published through May 10, 2023, following PRISMA guidelines and a registered PROSPERO protocol (CRD42022335402). We included observational studies reporting telomerase activity or telomere length in patients with breast cancer compared with women with benign lesions or normal tissue (control women). The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate the quality of studies. Data were expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI). Random effects and inverse variance methods were used to meta-analyze associations. The I

The meta-analysis of telomerase shows significantly greater activity in patients with breast cancer than in those without malignancies (OR = 23.46, 95 % CI 14.07-39.11, p < 0.00001, I
= 72 %). There were non-significant differences in relative telomere length (OR = 1.16, 95 % CI = 0.90-1.49, p = 0.26, I
= 86 %) and leukocyte telomere length (OR = 2.32, 95 % CI = 0.89-6.08, p = 0.09, I
= 98 %) between women with and without breast cancer. In subgroup analyses by world regions of studies, both telomerase activity and telomere length displayed the same trends as in their respective meta-analyses. In sensitivity analyses, variables showed their respective same trends.
Telomerase activity is higher in patients with breast cancer than in women without malignancies. There were no significant differences in either relative telomere length or leukocyte telomere length in women with and without breast cancer. PROSPERO protocol CRD42022335402.
Purpose
The objective of this study is to analyse the relative survival with breast cancer in women diagnosed after new treatments were generalised and to ascertain the current effect that tumour ...characteristics such as grade, stage or subtype have on survival as well as the new AJCC-pathological prognostic score.
Methods
The breast cancer MCC-Spain follow-up study is a prospective cohort study of 1685 incident breast cancer cases. Women between 20 and 85 years old were recruited between the years 2008 and 2013 in 18 hospitals located in 10 Spanish provinces and they have been followed until 2017/2018. Relative survival was estimated after 3, 5 and 8 years of follow-up using Ederer II method. In addition, Weibull regression adjusted by age, hospital, grade and stage was used to investigate prognosis factors.
Results
Among components of TNM staging system, tumour size greater than 50 mm (i.e. T3 or T4) more than doubled the risk of dying, while N3 nodal involvement and presence of metastasis had a huge effect on mortality. The AJCC pathological prognostic score strongly correlated with survival; thus, hazard ratios increased as the score rose, being 2.31, 4.00, 4.94, 7.92, 2.26, 14.9 and 58.9 for scores IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IIIC and IV, respectively.
Conclusion
Both TNM staging and histological/molecular biomarkers are associated with overall survival in Spanish women with breast cancer; when both are combined in the AJCC pathological prognosis score, the prognostic value improved with risk indices that increased rapidly as the pathological prognosis score increased
This review analyzes the clinical associations between specific low genitourinary tract clinical circumstances in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women living with human immunodeficiency virus ...(WLHIV). Modern antiretroviral therapy (ART) improves survival and reduces opportunistic infections and HIV transmission. Despite appropriate ART, WLHIV may display menstrual dysfunction, risk of early menopause, vaginal microbiome alterations, vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, vasomotor symptoms and low sexual function as compared to women without the infection. They have increased risks of intraepithelial and invasive cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers. The reduced immunity capacity may also increase the risk of urinary tract infections, side-effects or toxicity of ARTs, and opportunistic infections. Menstrual dysfunction and early menopause may contribute to the early onset of vascular atherosclerosis and plaque formation, and increased osteoporosis risks requiring specific early interventions. On the other hand, the association between being postmenopausal and having a low sexual function is significant and related to low adherence to ART. WLHIV deserve a specific approach to manage different low genitourinary risks and complications related to hormone dysfunction and early menopause.
The acaricidal effect of 14 strains of Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato isolated from soil of livestock farms in the Mexican tropics was evaluated against larvae and engorged females, and during the ...laying and hatching of eggs of Rhipicephalus microplus (Ixodida: Ixodidae). For each fungal strain, the larvae mortality percentage was evaluated through a larval immersion test, while the reproductive efficiency indices in engorged females were measured using adult immersion tests at a dose of 1 × 108 conidia/ml. All strains of M. anisopliae (s.l.) proved to be highly effective against R. microplus larvae (66-100%) and engorged females (100%). The strains also showed a good effect in inhibiting egg laying (16.45-56.38%) and a moderate effect in decreasing egg hatching (5.24-32.68%). Two strains demonstrated to be effective against all development phases of R. microplus in an integrated manner.
