We report the first APOGEE metallicities and -element abundances measured for 3600 red giant stars spanning a large radial range of both the Large (LMC) and Small Magellanic Clouds, the largest Milky ...Way (MW) dwarf galaxies. Our sample is an order of magnitude larger than that of previous studies and extends to much larger radial distances. These are the first results presented that make use of the newly installed southern APOGEE instrument on the du Pont telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. Our unbiased sample of the LMC spans a large range in metallicity, from Fe/H = −0.2 to very metal-poor stars with Fe/H −2.5, the most metal-poor Magellanic Cloud (MC) stars detected to date. The LMC /Fe-Fe/H distribution is very flat over a large metallicity range but rises by ∼0.1 dex at −1.0 < Fe/H −0.5. We interpret this as a sign of the known recent increase in MC star formation activity and are able to reproduce the pattern with a chemical evolution model that includes a recent "starburst." At the metal-poor end, we capture the increase of /Fe with decreasing Fe/H and constrain the " -knee" to Fe/H −2.2 in both MCs, implying a low star formation efficiency of ∼0.01 Gyr−1. The MC knees are more metal-poor than those of less massive MW dwarf galaxies such as Fornax, Sculptor, or Sagittarius. One possible interpretation is that the MCs formed in a lower-density environment than the MW, a hypothesis that is consistent with the paradigm that the MCs fell into the MW's gravitational potential only recently.
Malnutrition is associated with poor prognosis in a wide range of illnesses. However, its prognostic impact in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is not well known.
This study sought to ...report the prevalence, clinical associations, and prognostic consequences of malnutrition in patients with ACS.
In this study, the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score, the Nutritional Risk Index (NRI), and the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) was applied to 5,062 consecutive patients with ACS. The relationships between malnutrition risk and all-cause mortality and major cardiovascular events (MACEs) (cardiovascular mortality, reinfarction, or ischemic stroke) were examined.
According to the CONUT score, NRI, and PNI, 11.2%, 39.5%, and 8.9% patients were moderately or severely malnourished, respectively; 71.8% were at least mildly malnourished by at least 1 score. Although worse scores were most strongly related to lower body mass index, between 8.4% and 36.7% of patients with a body mass index of ≥25 kg/m
were moderately or severely malnourished, depending on the nutritional index used. During a median follow-up of 3.6 years (interquartile range: 1.3 to 5.3 years), 830 (16.4%) patients died, and 1,048 (20.7%) had MACEs. Compared with good nutritional status, malnutrition was associated with significantly increased risk for all-cause death (adjusted hazard ratio for moderate and severe degrees of malnutrition, respectively: 2.02 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.65 to 2.49 and 3.65 95% CI: 2.41 to 5.51 for the CONUT score, 1.40 95% CI: 1.17 to 1.68 and 2.87 95% CI: 2.17 to 3.79 for the NRI, and 1.71 95% CI: 1.37 to 2.15 and 1.95 95% CI: 1.55 to 2.45 for the PNI score; p values <0.001 for all nutritional indexes). Similar results were found for the CONUT score and PNI regarding MACEs. All risk scores improve the predictive ability of the GRACE (Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events) risk score for both all-cause mortality and MACEs.
Malnutrition is common among patients with ACS and is strongly associated with increased mortality and cardiovascular events. Clinical trials are needed to prospectively evaluate the efficacy of nutritional interventions on outcomes in patients with ACS.
Abstract Despite the great advances that have been made in osteosarcoma therapy during recent decades, recurrence and metastases are still the most common outcome of the primary disease. Current ...treatments include drugs such as doxorubicin (DOX) that produce an effective response during the initial exposure of tumor cells but sometimes induce drug resistance within a few cycles of chemotherapy. New therapeutic strategies are therefore needed to overcome this resistance. To this end, DOX was loaded into lipid nanoparticles (LN) and its efficacy was evaluated in commercial and patient-derived metastatic osteosarcoma cell lines. DOX efficacy was heavily influenced by passage number in metastatic cells, in which an overexpression of P-gp was observed. Notably, DOX-LN overcame the resistance associated with cell passage and improved DOX efficacy fivefold. Moreover, when DOX was co-administered with either free or encapsulated edelfosine (ET), a synergistic effect was observed. This higher efficacy of the combined treatment was found to be at least partially due to an increase in caspase-dependent cell death. The combination of DOX and ET is thus likely to be effective against osteosarcoma.

The purpose of this article is to analyse the available literature describing the economic burden of dementia and to compare costs between studies examining cost drivers. To shed light on this field, ...a systematic review is performed using PubMed, the Cochrane Library and Web of Science. An eight-year retrospective horizon was considered until 25 May 2018. Several papers were obtained from the database search (n = 23), being others (n = 3) identified through other sources (hand-searching) because we did not detect it through the three databases. The cost estimates were compared between three perspectives: state/publicly funded health services, third-party/private sector/not-for-profit organisations and patient and family and/or societal. The estimated total annual cost per person with dementia in Europe is on average €32,506.73 (n = 10), whereas for the United States, it gets €42,898.65 (n = 2). Furthermore, differences are appreciated by type of costs. Besides, differences by severity groups are also considered. Overall, the higher the severity the higher the associated costs. Dementia imposes a huge economic burden. The figures here presented provide a good framework to quantify these costs for both, economic experts and researchers, and policy decision makers.

One of the main challenges in simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is real-time processing. High-computational loads linked to data acquisition and processing complicate this task. This ...article presents an efficient feature extraction approach for mapping structured environments. The proposed methodology, weighted conformal LiDAR-mapping (WCLM), is based on the extraction of polygonal profiles and propagation of uncertainties from raw measurement data. This is achieved using conformal M bius transformation. The algorithm has been validated experimentally using 2-D data obtained from a low-cost Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) range finder. The results obtained suggest that computational efficiency is significantly improved with reference to other state-of-the-art SLAM approaches.

, i.p., or 50 μg kg
, oral gavage for 10 days), as well as in cultured hepatocytes.
In ob/ob mice, MaR1 reduced liver triglycerides (TG) content, fatty acid synthase (FAS) and stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 protein expression, while increased acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) phosphorylation and LC3II protein expression, in parallel with a drop in p62 levels. Similar effects on hepatic TG, ACC phosphorylation, p62 and LC3II were observed in DIO mice after MaR1 i.p. injection. Interestingly, oral gavage of MaR1 also decreased serum transaminases, reduced liver weight and TG content. MaR1-treated mice exhibited reduced hepatic lipogenic enzymes content (FAS) or activation (by phosphorylation of ACC), accompanied by upregulation of carnitine palmitoyltransferase (Cpt1a), acyl-coenzyme A oxidase (Acox1) and autophagy-related proteins 5 and 7 (Atg5-7) gene expression, along with increased number of autophagic vacuoles and reduced p62 protein levels. MaR1 also induced AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation in DIO mice and in primary hepatocytes, and AMPK inhibition completely blocked MaR1 effects on Cpt1a, Acox1, Atg5 and Atg7 expression.
MaR1 ameliorates liver steatosis by decreasing lipogenic enzymes, while inducing fatty acid oxidation genes and autophagy, which could be related to AMPK activation. Thus, MaR1 may be a new therapeutic candidate for reducing fatty liver in obesity.
Skin mucus is considered the first barrier against diseases in fish. The skin mucus protein profile of the greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and its changes due to experimental infection with ...Neobenedenia girellae were studied by combining 2-DE-MS/MS and gel-free LC-MS/MS proteomic approaches. The 2-DE results led to the identification of 69 and 55 proteins in noninfected and infected fish, respectively, and revealed that keratins were specifically cleaved in parasitized fish. Therefore, the skin mucus of the infected fish showed a higher protease activity due to, at least in part, an increase of metal-dependent protease and serine-type protease activities. Additionally, through a gel-free LC-MS/MS analysis, 1377 and 1251 different proteins were identified in the skin mucus of healthy and parasitized fish, respectively. The functional analysis of these proteins demonstrated a statistical overrepresentation of ribosomal proteins (a well-known source of antimicrobial peptides) in N. girellae-infected fish. In contrast, the components of membranes and protein transport GO categories were underrepresented after infection. Immune system process-related proteins constituted 2.5% of the total skin mucosal proteins. Among these skin mucosal proteins, 14 and 15 proteins exclusive to non-parasitized and parasitized fish were found, respectively, including specific serine-type proteases and metalloproteases in the parasitized fish. Moreover, the finding of tryptic peptides exclusive to some bacterial genera, obtained by gel-free LC-MS/MS, allowed us to construct a preliminary map of the microbiota living in the mucus of S. dumerili, with Pseudomonas and Paracoccus the most represented genera in both noninfected and infected fish.

In 2008, following its R&D strategy roadmap for Concentrated Solar Power, Abengoa designed, built and tested a unique Molten Salts pilot plant at the representative scale of 8 MWhth, coupled with a ...trough oil loop. The objectives of this project were based on evaluating the technology at a scale at which the results are sufficiently representative of the real circumstances facing a commercial plant that utilizes this storage technology. To this end, the MS-TES plant was brought into operation on January 19th, 2009, been the first demo plant of indirect double tank storage in operation in the world. Key points such a material corrosion, analysis of possible leakage points, calculation of performance or true efficiency of the storage (including a thorough assessment of thermal losses) and analysis of plant operation are the lines that have been analysed at this plant. Operational aspects such as the mechanical assembling, the pre-heating, the filling up and plant performance were deeply addressed. Key components as the storage tanks, the heat exchanger, the molten salts pumps, the heat-tracing systems or valves and instrumentation were tested. In this first paper, the description and commissioning of the plant is presented together a set of lessons learnt to be applied at the commercial plant scale.
