Founded in Rochester, New York, in 1880, Eastman Kodak went on to become the second-largest chemical company in the United States, and they are said to have made 80 percent of all the filmstock in ...existence. For over a century, the company saturated every aspect of American visual culture—from family albums to advertisements and Hollywood films to technologies of war and state surveillance. Mass-mediated images shot on Kodak film gave visual form to national fantasies, with their archetype subjects and landscapes, while consumer products invited ordinary people to image themselves within these collective fantasies (Figures 1-5).1 Considered as a chemical process, a corporate infrastructure, and a medium of the imagination, Kodak film potentiated a specifically American vision of the “good life” that achieved a global monopoly in the twentieth century and that remade the world on the levels of fantasy, image, and molecule. For generations, the company functioned locally as a “total institution” (Goffman, 1961) and precursor and proxy for the welfare state. It distributed benefits and resources through workers’ households and in the process made the nuclear family a sociological reality in Rochester. Workers were promised a paycheck for 30 years and a pension after that, and their children could also assume they would also find jobs at “Eastman's.”
The decision to collaborate for companies in knowledge exchange processes has become more complex due to a greater diversity of innovation intermediaries from companies, universities, government and ...societal actors. The aim of this study is to uncover and conceptualize the role of innovation intermediaries in knowledge sharing. Specifically in tacit knowledge sharing, intermediaries function as boundary spanners between various stakeholders in the innovation process. Despite this potential, which has been discussed in a large strand of case studies, there is no comprehensive concept to determine factors that influence innovation intermediaries in knowledge sharing. This paper develops an analytical framework of innovation intermediaries for prospective empirical work building on factors influencing innovation intermediaries in knowledge sharing by systematically reviewing related literature. It specifically presents what are the determinants, factors and indicators discussed empirically innovation intermediaries in knowledge sharing. The first results is that the measurement of innovative outcome intermediaries enables a broader perspective in comparison to traditional innovation indicators. The second results that literature discusses indirect innovation that enhances clients’ innovative capabilities and their entrepreneurial activities. The third results demonstrates, that while the internal perspective varies with the heterogeneous actors, the development of contextual knowledge of intermediaries in networks and its transfer is central for empirical analysis. The conceptualization of this framework paves the path for further research needed to uncover the role of intermediaries.
We investigate whether a more concentrated regional industrial structure – the dominance of a few large firms in a given industry in a region – limits agglomeration economies and ultimately ...diminishes the economic performance of firms in that industry, especially small ones. In an application to three industries using establishment-level production functions and a combination of confidential and publicly available data sources, we find a consistently negative and substantial direct productivity effect associated with regional industrial structure concentration and only mixed and relatively weak evidence that agglomeration economies are a mediating factor in that effect.
► We investigate the effects of a concentrated regional industrial structure for the performance of manufacturing firms. ► Three industries are examined using establishment-level production functions constructed using confidential U.S. Census data. ► More concentrated industrial structures reduce economic performance, particularly for small firms. ► We do not find strong evidence that limits on agglomeration economies mediate the effect.
Innovation intermediaries provide support during innovation processes and contribute to clients’ innovativeness. In a growing body of literature, innovation intermediaries are considered as knowledge ...brokers and boundary spanners in regional innovation systems. While previous studies have highlighted insights into intermediaries’ impact on clients, observations of their internal policies and working mechanisms remain scarce. Based on a case study of Berlin-based innovation and creativity labs, this paper sheds light on the innovation strategies chosen by intermediaries. I find that a distinct dualism of cooperation and competition shapes the innovation strategies of innovation intermediaries. The growing number of competitors and a lack of transparency shape the role of regional policy that offers information and market coordination. I present policy recommendations based on the results.
The measurement of partial discharges (PD) is a non-destructive and sensitive diagnostic tool for the condition assessment of insulating systems. Two major tasks of PD measurements may be ...distinguished, (i) PD detection, hence providing evidence and the type of the PD and (ii) the location of the PD. The question "Where is the PD source?" is amongst others tremendously important for scheduling and starting maintenance/repair actions cost and time efficiently or to perform a risk analysis. Here the possibility to geometrically localize the flaw, by means of arrival times of acoustic PD signals, gets an extremely interesting option. Precise acoustic arrival times are consequently essential to accurately locate PD in a power transformer. The averaging of acoustic PD signals helps to enhance the acoustic sensitivity. The acoustic detection limit is lowered significantly and the determination of the arrival times is made possible for weaker PD. Supplementary steps, like automatic objective arrival time determination or additional wavelet-based de-noising further improve the overall location accuracy. A new location approach works with pseudo-times and allows for the use of robust direct solvers instead of the previously used iterative algorithms.
In his book ‘Is a Good God Logically Possible?’, James Sterba argues that the existence of much of the evil to be found in the world is logically incompatible with the existence of God. I defend the ...Thomistic view that when one properly understands the nature of God and of his relationship to the world, this so-called logical problem of evil does not arise. While Sterba has responded to the version of the Thomistic position presented by Brian Davies, I argue that his response fails.
