We determined if total prostate volume, transition zone volume or transition zone index is correlated with the severity of clinical benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
A total of 93 men 52 to 85 ...years old, who were referred to a urology outpatient facility for treatment of clinical BPH, elevated serum prostate specific antigen or abnormal digital rectal examination, underwent measurement of total prostate and transition zone volume at transrectal ultrasonography. All men were requested to undergo uroflowmetry and complete the American Urological Association (AUA) symptom score.
The pairwise correlations between AUA symptom score, versus total prostate and transition zone volumes and transition zone index were not statistically or clinically significant. A weak pairwise relationship was observed between peak flow rate versus total prostate volume (r
2 = 0.160), transition zone volume (r
2 = 0.156) and transition zone index (r (
2) = 0.147). The pairwise relationships between AUA symptom scores versus all prostate volumes were not statistically significant for subjects with mild (score 8 or less) or moderate to severe (score more than 8) symptoms.
Total prostate and transition zone volumes, and transition zone index are not directly related to AUA symptom score and only weakly related to peak flow rate. These findings provide further evidence that the total prostate, total BPH and relative BPH volumes are not useful determinants of the severity of clinical BPH.
This paper deals with the possibilities of noise suppression in partial discharge (PD) measurement under on-site conditions. After the presentation of previous work, a new concept of designing a ...digital FIR filter with a fixed order to suppress narrow-band disturbances will be presented. The method will be compared to a design using adaptive filters. A filter device, which was developed as an extension for a conventional PD detector, will be presented. In the second part of the paper, a method for suppressing pulse shaped noise synchronous to the test voltage will be discussed. The distributing pulses are detected automatically in a PD signal by comparing several recorded cycles of the test voltage. There are two possibilities to suppress the pulses. The first one is an off-line method that allows attenuation degrees up to 30 dB, the second one works on line, and can process continuous PD signals. For the latter case a suppression of 14 dB for worst case pulses is possible with the developed hardware. In order to demonstrate the abilities of the filters, several measurements will be shown.
The major auxin-binding protein (ZmERabp1) from maize (
Zea mays L.) has been structurally characterized. We determined the position of a disulfide bridge in ZmERabp1 by mass-spectrometric analysis. ...We show that Cys2 and Cys61 are covalently linked and that residue Cys155 bears the free sulfhydryl group. By making use of electrospray mass spectrometry, the molecular mass of ZmERabp1 was determined to be 20 243 Da comprising a sugar moiety of 1865 Da, corresponding to a high mannose-type glycan structure. Due to the high homology among all characterized ABPs, the information on the disulfide bonds will be important for functional analysis of recombinantly expressed ABP1.

Volatile markets can be distracting. The latest statistical data release, report on China or reading of the Federal Reserve tea leaves can cause the markets to fluctuate - and send institutional ...investors scurrying for cover or hunting to seize perceived opportunities. Staying on top of current market developments is important. But having a long-term, cohesive view of the critical secular global economic trends and their implications for asset valuations is essential for reaching ultimate investment objectives. Basing a portfolio's strategic asset allocation on a realistic and comprehensive 10- to 15-year perspective of what markets are likely to deliver can help investors build resilient portfolios and remain focused on their long-term goals.
We present the LATE algorithm, an asynchronous variant of the Earley algorithm for parsing context-free grammars. The Earley algorithm is naturally task-based, but is difficult to parallelize because ...of dependencies between the tasks. We present the LATE algorithm, which uses additional data structures to maintain information about the state of the parse so that work items may be processed in any order. This property allows the LATE algorithm to be sped up using task parallelism. We show that the LATE algorithm can achieve a 120x speedup over the Earley algorithm on a natural language task.
Optimizing the physical data storage and retrieval of data are two key database management problems. In this paper, we propose a language that can express a wide range of physical database layouts, ...going well beyond the row- and column-based methods that are widely used in database management systems. We use deductive synthesis to turn a high-level relational representation of a database query into a highly optimized low-level implementation which operates on a specialized layout of the dataset. We build a compiler for this language and conduct experiments using a popular database benchmark, which shows that the performance of these specialized queries is competitive with a state-of-the-art in memory compiled database system.
