Recent data from phosphorus (P) feeding trials have demonstrated that P concentration in dairy feces is directly affected by P levels in diets and that farm P surpluses as well as potential ...environmental losses can be reduced through dietary manipulation. The current study was conducted to examine the variability of fecal P under farm conditions and to elucidate factors affecting the concentration and solubility of fecal P. Feed and fecal samples from >30 commercial dairies in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions were analyzed. Dietary P concentrations ranged from 3.45 to 5.78g/kg of feed DM (DM), and P determined in acid digests (TP) of feces from 5.84 to 12.84g/kg of fecal DM. On average, 50% of fecal TP was water soluble; of the latter, 83% was inorganic (Pi). Across-farm variability (n=33) had CV averaging 18.9% for fecal TP and >20% for Pi and total P (Pt) in water extracts. Within-farm variability based on multiple samples per herd had the same magnitude as across-farm and was independent of sample numbers from individual farms (n=7 to 30). Of all fecal parameters determined, pH and DM had the lowest variability (CV <10%), water-soluble Pi, Pt, and Ca the highest (CV of 20 to 30%), and total P, Ca, and Mg determined by acid digests were intermediate (CV 10 to 20%). Water-soluble Pi concentrations determined in dried-ground fecal samples were lower than in wet samples. The drying-grinding process changes Pi solubility and the change is not linear. This study confirms that dietary P concentration is the dominating factor affecting fecal P excretion; however, Ca concentration, DIM, and fecal pH also made small, but statistically significant contributions, although some of the mechanisms remain to be thoroughly investigated.
Cerulenin has been shown to reduce body weight and hepatic steatosis in murine models of obesity by inhibiting fatty acid synthase (FAS). We have shown that attenuating intrahepatocyte lipid content ...diminished the sensitivity of ob/ob mice to ischemia/reperfusion injury and improved survival after liver transplantation. The mechanism of action is by inhibition of fatty acid metabolism by downregulating PPARα, as well as mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2), with a concomitant increase in ATP. A short treatment course of cerulenin prior to I/R injury is ideal for protection of steatotic livers. Cerulenin opens the potential for expanding the use of steatotic livers in transplantation.
A preclinical insert for small animal simultaneous SPECT and MR imaging, in particular for imaging mouse brains, is presented. It consists of ten static magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-compatible ...gamma cameras based on tiles of silicon photomultipliers readout by a multichannel ASIC and coupled to 5 cm × 5 cm CsI(Tl) scintillators and to an MRI-compatible multipinhole collimator. Calibration and image reconstruction algorithm are illustrated. Mutual compatibility is demonstrated along with imaging performance that is comparable with other non-MR micro-SPECT systems: 0.9 mm tomographic spatial resolution across a transverse field of view of 15.6 mm, 12% energy resolution (at 140 keV), and 1105 cps/MBq sensitivity. Experimental results with phantoms (glass capillaries of 290 μm diameter and a mini Derenzo) are presented.

We report a study of the CUORE sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. We used a Bayesian analysis based on a toy Monte Carlo (MC) approach to extract the exclusion sensitivity to the ...0νββ decay half-life (T1/20ν) at 90% credibility interval (CI) – i.e. the interval containing the true value of T1/20ν with 90% probability – and the 3σ discovery sensitivity. We consider various background levels and energy resolutions, and describe the influence of the data division in subsets with different background levels. If the background level and the energy resolution meet the expectation, CUORE will reach a 90% CI exclusion sensitivity of 2·1025 year with 3 months, and 9·1025 year with 5 years of live time. Under the same conditions, the discovery sensitivity after 3 months and 5 years will be 7·1024 year and 4·1025 year, respectively.
The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN in Italy is an experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. Its main ...goal is to investigate this decay in ^{130}Te, but its ton-scale mass and low background make CUORE sensitive to other rare processes as well. In this Letter, we present our first results on the search for 0νββ decay of ^{128}Te, the Te isotope with the second highest natural isotopic abundance. We find no evidence for this decay, and using a Bayesian analysis we set a lower limit on the ^{128}Te 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}>3.6×10^{24} yr (90% CI). This represents the most stringent limit on the half-life of this isotope, improving by over a factor of 30 the previous direct search results, and exceeding those from geochemical experiments for the first time.
We measured two-neutrino double beta decay of 130Te using an exposure of 300.7 kg yr accumulated with the CUORE detector. Using a Bayesian analysis to fit simulated spectra to experimental data, it ...was possible to disentangle all the major background sources and precisely measure the two-neutrino contribution. The half-life is in agreement with past measurements with a strongly reduced uncertainty: T2ν1/2=7.71+0.08−0.06 (stat)+0.12−0.15 ( syst ) × 1020 yr . This measurement is the most precise determination of the 130Te 2 ν β β decay half-life to date.
Abstract The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) in the isotope $$\mathrm ...{^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te . In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te to the first $$0^{+}_2$$ 0 2 + excited state of $$\mathrm {^{130}Xe}$$ 130 Xe : the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ( $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β ). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg $$\times $$ × yr TeO $$_2$$ 2 exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $$\mathrm {S^{0\nu }_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 0 ν = 5.6 × 10 24 yr for the $${0\nu \beta \beta }$$ 0 ν β β decay and $$\mathrm {S^{2\nu }_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 2 ν = 2.1 × 10 24 yr for the $${2\nu \beta \beta }$$ 2 ν β β decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $$90\%$$ 90 % C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{0\nu }_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 0 ν > 5.9 × 10 24 yr for the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β mode and $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{2\nu }_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 2 ν > 1.3 × 10 24 yr for the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te to excited states and improve by a factor $$\sim 5$$ ∼ 5 the previous results on this process.
A clinical SPECT insert for a commercial MRI scanner has been developed within the INSERT project, allowing simultaneous SPECT/MRI studies of the human brain. Here we present preliminary experimental ...results. The reconstructed resolution was 6-11 mm and the sensitivity 280-440 s -1 /MBq. The INSERT is the first clinical SPECT prototype for simultaneous SPECT/MRI.
