Up to 27 May 2022, Portugal has detected 96 confirmed cases of monkeypox. We describe 27 confirmed cases (median age: 33 years (range: 22-51); all males), with an earliest symptom onset date of 29 ...April. Almost all cases (n = 25) live in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley health region. Most cases were neither part of identified transmission chains, nor linked to travel or had contact with symptomatic persons or with animals, suggesting the possible previously undetected spread of monkeypox.
Background: Epidemic intelligence (EI) ensures early detection, assessment, and communication of public health threats. Threat reporting defines priorities and mobilize resources for surveillance, ...prevention, and control. In Portugal, the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) is responsible for EI and publishes a weekly public health threat report (RONDA). Changes in threats in regular threat reports since COVID-19 have not been previously described. We analysed changes in non-COVID threat reporting in the weekly threat report. Methods: Using the DGS Emergency Operations Centre’s threat reporting database, we compared threats reported in RONDAs from 2016 to 2022 in three sequential periods: P1 before COVID-19 (January 2016–March 2020), P2 during acute COVID-19 restrictions (April 2020–February 2022), and P3 in post-acute COVID-19 phase (February 2022–September 2022). We described the monthly average frequency of reports on non-COVID-19 threats in those periods considering different disease groups, geographical focus, and information sources. We estimated expected non-COVID-19 reports on threats using a forecast model fitted to the time series until March 2020 and compared observed and expected values. Results: Non-COVID-19 threats had a decrease in the monthly average frequency of reporting in period 2 (<mml:math id="m1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mover accent="true"><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">x</mml:mi>¯</mml:mover>1</mml:math>: 4.7 vs. <mml:math id="m2" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mover accent="true"><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">x</mml:mi>¯</mml:mover></mml:math>: 2.3, p < 0.001) compared to period 1. Using the forecast methods, there were 114 fewer non-COVID threats than the 162 expected (−70%) in period 2. In period 3, there were 105 more threats than expected (+256%). The ECDC and the WHO were the most frequent sources of information followed by national Public Health sources. Conclusions: During COVID-19, there was a decrease in reports on non-COVID threats in Portugal. COVID-19 possibly affected global EI, by shifting attention and resources from other threats to the pandemic. However, the number of threats that warrant follow-up and communication is increasing. Further research is necessary to inform the EI research and development agenda, to ensure that all relevant threats are detected, accessed, and communicated according to evolving EI objectives and priorities while resources and preparedness are guaranteed.
In September 2023, the UK Health Security Agency identified cases of Salmonella Saintpaul distributed across England, Scotland, and Wales, all with very low genetic diversity. Additional cases were ...identified in Portugal following an alert raised by the United Kingdom. Ninety-eight cases with a similar genetic sequence were identified, 93 in the United Kingdom and 5 in Portugal, of which 46% were aged under 10 years. Cases formed a phylogenetic cluster with a maximum distance of six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and average of less than one SNP between isolates. An outbreak investigation was undertaken, including a case–control study. Among the 25 UK cases included in this study, 13 reported blood in stool and 5 were hospitalized. One hundred controls were recruited via a market research panel using frequency matching for age. Multivariable logistic regression analysis of food exposures in cases and controls identified a strong association with cantaloupe consumption (adjusted odds ratio: 14.22; 95% confidence interval: 2.83–71.43; p-value: 0.001). This outbreak, together with other recent national and international incidents, points to an increase in identifications of large outbreaks of Salmonella linked to melon consumption. We recommend detailed questioning and triangulation of information sources to delineate consumption of specific fruit varieties during Salmonella outbreaks.
On 5 April 2022, the United Kingdom reported an increase of cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology in children, several needing hospitalisation and some required liver transplant or ...died. Thereafter, 35 countries reported probable cases, almost half of them in Europe. Facing the alert, on 28 April, Portugal created a multidisciplinary Task Force (TF) for rapid detection of probable cases and response. The experts of the TF came from various disciplines: clinicians, laboratory experts, epidemiologists, public health experts and national and international communication. Moreover, Portugal adopted the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) case definition and recommendations. By 31 December 2022, 28 probable cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology were reported: 16 male and 17 aged under 2 years. Of these cases, 23 were hospitalised but none required liver transplant or died. Adenovirus was detected from nine of 26 tested cases. No association was observed between adenovirus infection and hospital admission after adjusting for age, sex and region in a binomial regression model. The TF in Portugal may have contributed to increase awareness among clinicians, enabling early detection and prompt management of the outbreak.
Num mundo globalizado onde os mercados se tornam competitivos, os colaboradores mais exigentes e insaciáveis, surgem novas necessidades do Homem no trabalho, a experiência pode ser fator ...diferenciador na sua jornada dentro da organização.Decorrente da tendência da economia da experiência, que tem ganho primazia nos negócios relativamente ao consumidor, procurou-se, nesta investigação, conhecer se esta tendência seria transversal ao público interno, motivada pela comunicação interna. Para determinar se é possível adotar o conceito de economia da experiência e as suas quatro dimensões (entretenimento, aprendizagem, evasão e estética), propostas por Pine e Gilmore (1998), realizou-se um estudo empírico, pela interpretação de entrevistas semiestruturadas aos responsáveis pela comunicação interna, de nove organizações, distinguidas no Top 20 do estudo “Empresas mais felizes para trabalhar em Portugal”, da Happiness Works,em 2021. Os resultados permitiram concluir que existe economia da experiência relacionada com o colaborador e da otimização da experiência resultam cinco formas de retorno financeiro: atração de talento e sua retenção, atração de clientes e sua retenção também, e aumento de produtividade. Desta forma, os responsáveis pela comunicação interna e gestão da felicidade dos colaboradores têm um papel preponderante no sucesso de uma organização. O contributo da amostra tornou possível a construção de um modelo de experiências diferenciadoras com resultados positivos comprovados.
O objetivo geral deste trabalho é apresentar as atividades do projeto de extensão Cidades-irmãs, da Universidade Federal de Pelotas, no mapeamento das ações já realizadas sob o amparo da irmandade ...internacional entre os municípios de Pelotas (Brasil) e Suzu (Japão). A irmandade entre Pelotas e Suzu foi formalizada no ano de 1963 e, diante da verificada ausência de sistematização dessas ações, o projeto empreendeu um mapeamento com finalidade exploratória, por meio da abordagem qualitativa e da consulta a fontes primárias e secundárias. Visando divulgar informações sobre as iniciativas já realizadas junto à sociedade, bem como o aprofundamento das relações entre as cidades-irmãs, o mapeamento realizado permite considerar que diversas iniciativas já ocorreram entre os municípios, envolvendo tanto instituições públicas quanto privadas. Todavia, há pouca informação pública e acessível para a sociedade, tanto acerca das iniciativas já desenvolvidas quanto da própria cidade-irmã.
Caffeine consumption by academics, especially those in medical school, is done indiscriminately due to the need to reduce fatigue during their activities and, consequently, increasing their ...performance. Although it seems to be a harmless practice, it can be related to some health problems. Among these other damages are: arrhythmias, urinary incontinence, loss of appetite, nausea, increased blood pressure, insomnia and sudden death. In this context, this work evaluated cardiovascular damage associated to long-term use of caffeine based on clinical evaluation of students aged 18 years or older in a private medical college in Espírito Santo. Analysis was performed through a brief questionnaire followed by assessment of heart rate and blood pressure. The work was performed with 26 men and 69 women and an average of 70% of the population claimed to consume caffeine. It was also seen that among the students who had the greatest changes in relation to blood pressure were those who were in the 1st and 3rd years of the course. In short, no significant changes were observed in relation to caffeine consumption throughout graduation or cardiovascular impacts associated with its use. However, the evaluated individuals are mostly young and the study follow-up time was short.Keywords:Caffeine; Heart rate; Blood pressure; Chronic intoxication

based on a sample of eight males and 21 females from a population within the Cerrado. Sexual dimorphism was assessed using 15 morphometric measures; diet was calculated as an index of relative importance by prey item and tested for sex differences; fertility was tested for relations between body size and the number of eggs; and we also estimated the reproductive investment. Our results demonstrate that this population’s diet consisted mostly of ant species, with
Pheidole radoszkowskii
being the most important, followed by
Crematogaster
sp. and
Cyphomyrmex transversus
. Regarding sexual dimorphism, we observed that females were significantly larger than males, with a positive relationship between female size and the number of eggs. We did not find significant differences in the diets of males and females. Although the diet and reproductive aspects of
M. fulvoguttatus
are similar to those of its congeneric species, further studies are needed in order to address the relationship between the species diet and its chemical defenses.

Introdução: O choque séptico é uma das mais graves complicações da sepse, com elevada taxa de mortalidade entre os pacientes (SINGER et al., 2016). Foi responsável por 11 milhões de óbitos pelo mundo ...em 2017 (RUDD et al., 2020), sendo estimadas, no Brasil, cerca de 680 mil mortes por ano, principalmente nos departamentos de emergência (ILAS, 2017). Sendo assim, a identificação, bem como o manejo rápido e adequado, são fundamentais para melhores desfechos. Desse modo, muito tem sido questionado sobre os benefícios do uso da hidrocortisona em relação à mortalidade e ao tempo de internação nesse cenário. Objetivo: Objetivou-se avaliar o impacto do uso precoce de hidrocortisona na morbimortalidade do choque séptico. Para tanto, buscaram-se como objetivos específicos a compreensão sobre o uso precoce da hidrocortisona no choque séptico em serviços de saúde; a avaliação do impacto na morbimortalidade com uso de hidrocortisona; e a identificação de potenciais dificuldades no manejo da hidrocortisona no choque séptico. Materiais e métodos: Empregou-se como método a revisão integrativa de literatura, a qual possibilita a integração de conhecimentos obtidos em diversos estudos significativos sobre o tema mediante a pesquisa bibliográfica em bases de dados online (SOUZA et al., 2010). O trabalho iniciou-se a partir da pergunta norteadora “O uso precoce da hidrocortisona no choque séptico é capaz de reduzir a morbimortalidade dos pacientes internados em departamentos de emergência?”. Foram utilizadas as bases de dados PubMed, Scielo e MEDLINE, com artigos em inglês e em português dos últimos 5 anos. Foram selecionados 21 artigos dentre 54 que atendiam à questão norteadora. Ademais, foram excluídos os trabalhos referentes a pacientes pediátricos; os que não estavam nos idiomas propostos; e os que não abordaram o manejo do choque séptico com hidrocortisona. Resultados e discussão: Observou-se uma tendência de crescimento de pesquisas sobre o assunto nos últimos anos. Dentre os trabalhos, um terço avaliou pacientes em UTI, e mais de 60% dos estudos avaliaram pacientes com maior necessidade de cuidado prolongado, o que é interessante ao analisar os desfechos esperados com uma nova medicação em relação a tratamentos preconizados, mas pode limitar o entendimento do impacto do uso da hidrocortisona no tratamento precoce em indivíduos previamente hígidos. A maior parte dos trabalhos ressaltou não haver mudança de desfecho dos pacientes com o uso precoce de hidrocortisona, uma parcela importante mostrou resultados inconclusivos e apenas um trabalho evidenciou uma menor mortalidade. Entretanto, houve trabalhos que identificaram uma redução no tempo de internação. Considerações finais: Assim, é nítido que há uma incerteza sobre o assunto de acordo com os achados obtidos em diferentes estudos, carecendo, portanto, de conclusões definitivas acerca da corticoterapia precoce e corriqueira no manejo do choque séptico. Além disso, vê-se a demanda por mais critérios para a avaliação isolada da hidrocortisona, sobretudo, no tratamento precoce nos pacientes previamente hígidos provenientes dos serviços de emergência. Finalmente, são esperados mais estudos sobre o assunto para a melhor elucidação das contradições observadas em diferentes pesquisas e para a obtenção de um melhor consenso.
