The cancer stem cells (CSCs) represent a minority of tumor cells that are able to proliferate and self-renew and might be responsible for tumor initiation and maintenance. The CD133 and CD117 are the ...most commonly used markers for putative CSCs, especially for ovarian CSCs, but its clinical significance remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to compare the immunohistochemical expression of CD133 and CD117 in 69 primary ovarian serous carcinoma and peritoneal metastasis, and to examine their potential clinical role. CD133 expression was mainly seen in the apical/endoluminal cell surface of tumor cells and was found in 58% of carcinoma samples and 42% of metastasis. The median of CD133 positive cells in tumors was 1 (0.1-7) %, and in metastases was 0.55 (0.1-6) %. CD117 expression appeared as a cytoplasmic and/or membranous stain and was found in 81% of carcinoma samples and 77% of metastasis. The median of CD117 positive cells in tumors was 1 (0.1-8) %, and in metastases was 0.1 (0.1-6) %. Multivariate analysis showed that patients with high CD133 expression in tumor have significantly shorter time to progression and time to survival (P=0.004 and P=0.016, respectively). Patients with high CD117 expression in tumor have significantly shorter time to progression (P=0.034). Cox´s proportional hazards model identified expression of CD133 protein in tumor as independent prognostic factor. Our study indicates that the immunohistochemical assessment of CD133 and CD117 expression may have potential clinical value in predicting disease progression and prognosis in serous ovarian cancer. CD133 proved to be an independent prognostic factor in serous ovarian cancer patients.
The aim of this study was to test a combination of automated headspace solid phase‐microextraction gas chromatography (GC) with chemometrical data treatment for the rapid differentiation of ...enzyme‐inactivated homogenates of new apple cultivars. The four cultivars Pinova, Piflora, Renora and Florina are characterized by different volatile patterns. Differences in the contents of volatiles were especially found for butyl acetate, ethyl butanoate, 2‐methyl butanol, ethyl acetate and 6‐methyl‐5‐hepten‐2‐ol. The used sample preparation method for GC coupled with pattern recognition of chromatograms is a useful tool for rapid and reliable determination of large numbers of samples.

In this contribution, the impact of slits on reference planes of microstrip lines in thin-film polymer layers is studied. The return-currents of the microstrip lines excite the slits, causing them to ...behave like slot transmission lines that are short-circuited at both ends. Consequently, strong electromagnetic coupling occurs, especially when the slits are resonant within the frequency range of interest. We realized that the intensity of this coupling and hence, the amount of power lost from the microstrip lines depends on whether the fields that are coupled away from the lines through the slits penetrate into the silicon on which the thin film polymer layers are developed. For example, a resonant 5 mm long slit causes approximately 55% of power to be lost from a non-resonant 2.5 mm long microstrip line, when the fields penetrate into silicon. When the fields are shielded by a copper layer, the power lost from the line reduces to 15%. To experimentally validate the modeling approach, test structures were designed, fabricated and measured. A very good correlation was obtained between measurement and simulation results. Finally, guidelines to minimize power lost from microstrip lines in the presence of slits were deduced.
Rak vrata maternice, u odnosu na malignome drugih ginekoloških sijela, jest bolest mlađih žena koja se može redovitim kontrolama i zdravstvenim odgojem prevenirati, a u slučaju pojave bolesti ...učinkovito liječiti. Metode liječenja uključuju kirurgiju, radioterapiju i kemoterapiju, ovisno o stadiju bolesti i općem stanju bolesnica. Odluku o liječenju donosi multidisciplinarni tim. S obzirom na važnost ove bolesti, potrebno je definirati i provoditi standardizirani pristup u dijagnostici, liječenju i praćenju ovih bolesnica. U tekstu koji slijedi iznesene su kliničke smjernice s ciljem implementacije standardiziranih postupaka u radu s bolesnicama s rakom vrata maternice u Republici Hrvatskoj.
Objective. To investigate the role of interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF β1) in the regulation of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases—1 (TIMP‐1) synthesis in human ...articular chondrocytes.
Methods. Articular cartilage was obtained from human knee joints 24 hours after death. Chondrocytes were isolated by collagenase digestion and embedded in low‐gelling‐temperature agarose. After stimulation by cytokines, total RNA was isolated and analyzed by Northern blotting. TIMP‐1 protein levels were determined using a competitive enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay.
Results. Human chondrocytes in agarose culture expressed messenger RNA (mRNA) for the IL‐6 receptor (gp80) and its signal‐transducing subunit gp130. In contrast to the findings in a previous study, IL‐6 did not stimulate TIMP‐1 expression in these cells, whereas TGF β1 was an important inducer of TIMP‐1 mRNA and protein synthesis.
Conclusion. Our findings suggest that TGF β1 has a protective effect on the extracellular matrix of human articular chondrocytes.

Our hope is that its ...contents will be a useful overview of some of the problems that present themselves in real clinical practice and of some of the techniques that have proven to fulfill the challenging requirements of these problems in terms of speed and robustness, and that have become properly validated products.
