Abstract
Habitat transitions are key potential explanations for why some lineages have diversified and others have not—from Anolis lizards to Darwin's finches. The ecological ramifications of ...marine-to-freshwater transitions for fishes suggest evolutionary contingency: some lineages maintain their ancestral niches in novel habitats (niche conservatism), whereas others alter their ecological role. However, few studies have considered phenotypic, ecological, and lineage diversification concurrently to explore this issue. Here, we investigated the macroevolutionary history of the taxonomically and ecologically diverse Neotropical freshwater river rays (subfamily Potamotrygoninae), which invaded and diversified in the Amazon and other South American rivers during the late Oligocene to early Miocene. We generated a time-calibrated, multi-gene phylogeny for Potamotrygoninae and reconstructed evolutionary patterns of diet specialization. We measured functional morphological traits relevant for feeding and used comparative phylogenetic methods to examine how feeding morphology diversified over time. Potamotrygonine trophic and phenotypic diversity are evenly partitioned (non-overlapping) among internal clades for most of their history, until 20–16 mya, when more recent diversification suggests increasing overlap among phenotypes. Specialized piscivores (Heliotrygon and Paratrygon) evolved early in the history of freshwater stingrays, while later trophic specialization (molluscivory, insectivory, and crustacivory) evolved in the genus Potamotrygon. Potamotrygonins demonstrate ecological niche lability in diets and feeding apparatus; however, diversification has mostly been a gradual process through time. We suggest that competition is unlikely to have limited the potamotrygonine invasion and diversification in South America.
Instances of convergent or parallel evolution provide a potent model system for exploring contingency and determinism in evolutionary biology. Likewise, the multiple, independent habitat transitions ...from saltwater to freshwater biomes offer opportunity for studying convergent evolution within and among different vertebrate lineages. For example, stingrays have invaded freshwater habitats multiple times across different continents, sometimes even several times within the same clade (e.g., Dasyatidae). We evaluated the frequency of saltwater-freshwater invasions in stingrays, compared ecological and phenotypic diversification among freshwater and saltwater lineages, and assessed the degree of convergence among freshwater species. Despite not being morphologically distinct from saltwater stingrays, freshwater stingrays do expand the margins of stingray morphological diversity. According to our data, trophic specialists occupied non-overlapping regions of morphospace, with piscivores and molluscivores being distinct from other diet guilds. Freshwater stingrays as a group did not strongly converge morphologically, neither did freshwater rays from different lineages which shared similar niches. These findings could be explained by there not being enough time for convergence to occur among more ancient and more recent freshwater lineages. Alternatively, the different ancestral bauplans of various freshwater ray lineages and weak selection on optimal phenotypes could promote contingency in the form of evolution along paths of least resistance.
Abstract Background To present the rationale for the new Obsessive–Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRD) grouping in the Mental and Behavioural Disorders chapter of the Eleventh Revision of the ...World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), including the conceptualization and essential features of disorders in this grouping. Methods Review of the recommendations of the ICD-11 Working Group on the Classification for OCRD. These sought to maximize clinical utility, global applicability, and scientific validity. Results The rationale for the grouping is based on common clinical features of included disorders including repetitive unwanted thoughts and associated behaviours, and is supported by emerging evidence from imaging, neurochemical, and genetic studies. The proposed grouping includes obsessive–compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, hypochondriasis, olfactory reference disorder, and hoarding disorder. Body-focused repetitive behaviour disorders, including trichotillomania and excoriation disorder are also included. Tourette disorder, a neurological disorder in ICD-11, and personality disorder with anankastic features, a personality disorder in ICD-11, are recommended for cross-referencing. Limitations Alternative nosological conceptualizations have been described in the literature and have some merit and empirical basis. Further work is needed to determine whether the proposed ICD-11 OCRD grouping and diagnostic guidelines are mostly likely to achieve the goals of maximizing clinical utility and global applicability. Conclusion It is anticipated that creation of an OCRD grouping will contribute to accurate identification and appropriate treatment of affected patients as well as research efforts aimed at improving our understanding of the prevalence, assessment, and management of its constituent disorders.
In response to the emerging crisis and growing calls from patients and clinicians for guidance 5, a working group of clinical experts from the International College of Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum ...Disorders (ICOCS) and the Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Research Network of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (OCRN) have produced this consensus statement with the aim of delivering pragmatic guidance at the earliest opportunity to clinicians for managing this complex challenge. Based on the risks associated with exposure and response prevention (ERP) in the pandemic (see below), and uncertainty as to which of the two evidence-based treatments, pharmacotherapy or cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), represents the most efficacious first line treatment modality 11, pharmacotherapy should be the first option for adults and children with OCD with contamination, washing or cleaning symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Consider A) type of medication; most patients should receive an SSRI, or if not responsive, another SSRI and as a third choice clomipramine (for which an ECG may be required in certain patient groups); Note US Food and Drug Administration "black box" warnings or advice from equivalent national regulatory authorities regarding increased risk in young people and other vulnerable patient groups. Check for adverse effects and be available for any concerns related to "activation" or newly emergent or increased suicidal ideation, which in the young can be mitigated by starting treatment at a low dose and titrating more gradually; B) dosage; if the patient is on a suboptimal dose, consider increasing it, paying attention to any contraindications; C) SSRI-resistance; consider a low dose of adjunctive antipsychotic (aripiprazole, risperidone, quetiapine, olanzapine), especially if a tic is present; D) adherence; ensure the patient is able to obtain an adequate supply and is taking the treatment regularly.

Ecosystem trends: evidence for ...agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 1057–1068.The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes. They had a greater power than survey data to detect recent changes, showing that fishers' perceptions have great potential as early warning signals.

513 dogs with diskospondylitis (cases) and 236,109 canine hospital ...accessions (controls) from 12 veterinary teaching hospitals.
Information retrieved from the medical records of 123 dogs with diskospondylitis at the Louisiana State University veterinary teaching hospital between 1980 and 2001 included sex, age, breed, primary complaint, neurologic status, location of lesions, causative organism, treatment, and outcome. The signalment of 390 additional cases from 11 other veterinary teaching hospitals was accessed from the Veterinary Medical Database. Comparisons were made with controls from the same time periods.
Male dogs were twice as likely as female dogs to be affected (odds ratio OR, 2.0; 95% confidence interval CI, 1.7 to 2.4). Dogs were significantly more likely to be affected as age increased. Purebred dogs, especially Great Danes, were more likely than mixed-breed dogs to be affected (OR, 73; CI, 4.3 to 12.6). For dogs from Louisiana State University, Staphylococcus spp, Brucella spp, Streptococcus spp, and Escherichia coli were isolated most often; multiple organisms were detected via microbial culture in 11 dogs. The mean duration of treatment was 53.7 weeks.
Male dogs, older dogs, and Great Danes appeared more likely to be affected with diskospondylitis than female dogs, dogs < 1 year of age, and mixed-breed dogs, respectively. Long-term administration of antimicrobial drugs for treatment of diskospondylitis may be expected. Identification of the causative organism and early treatment are recommended.
Amphotericin B is an antibiotic used in the treatment of fungal disease and leishmania; however, it exhibits side effects to patients, hindering its wider application. Therefore, nanocarriers have ...been investigated as delivery systems for amphotericin B (AMB) in order to decrease its toxicity, besides increase bioavailability and solubility. Amphiphilic copolymers are interesting materials to encapsulate hydrophobic drugs such as AMB, hence copolymers of cashew gum (CG) and l-lactide (LA) were synthesized using two different CG:LA molar ratios (1:1 and 1:10). Data obtained revealed that copolymer nanoparticles present similar figures for particle sizes and zeta potentials; however, particle size of encapsulated AMB increases if compared to unloaded nanoparticles. The 1:10 nanoparticle sample has better stability although higher polydispersity index (PDI) if compared to 1:1 sample. High amphotericin (AMB) encapsulation efficiencies and low hemolysis were obtained. AMB loaded copolymers show lower aggregation pattern than commercial AMB solution. AMB loaded nanoparticles show antifungal activities against four C. albicans strains. It can be inferred that cashew gum/polylactide copolymers have potential as nanocarrier systems for AMB.

Background:
The Research Domain Criteria seeks to bridge knowledge from neuroscience with clinical practice by promoting research into valid neurocognitive phenotypes and dimensions, irrespective of ...symptoms and diagnoses as currently conceptualized. While the Research Domain Criteria offers a vision of future research and practice, its 39 functional constructs need refinement to better target new phenotyping efforts. This study aimed to determine which Research Domain Criteria constructs are most relevant to understanding obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, based on a consensus between experts in the field of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.
Methods:
Based on a modified Delphi method, 46 experts were recruited from Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Over three rounds, experts had the opportunity to review their opinion in light of feedback from the previous round, which included how their response compared to other experts and a summary of comments given.
Results:
Thirty-four experts completed round one, of whom 28 (82%) completed round two and 24 (71%) completed round three. At the final round, four constructs were endorsed by ⩾75% of experts as ‘primary constructs’ and therefore central to understanding obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. Of these constructs, one came from the Positive Valence System (Habit), two from the Cognitive Control System (Response Selection/Inhibition and Performance Monitoring) and the final construct was an additional item suggested by experts (Compulsivity).
Conclusion:
This study identified four Research Domain Criteria constructs that, according to experts, cut across different obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. These constructs represent key areas for future investigation, and may have potential implications for clinical practice in terms of diagnostic processes and therapeutic management of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.
Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the influence of HLA class II genes on the response to interferon-α (IFN-α) in patients with chronic hepatitis C.
Methods: The distribution of HLA ...DRB1 and DQB1 alleles was assessed in 170 caucasoı̈d patients treated with IFN-α for chronic hepatitis C. 50 patients had a long term sustained response to treatment whereas 120 patients were nonresponders.
Results: Female sex, non-1 HCV genotype particularly genotype 2 and pretreatment low serum HCV RNA level were associated with long-term sustained response to IFN-α. A trend towards a higher prevalence of DRB1∗07 allele in non responders than in patients with sustained response (45% vs. 28%, odds ratio 2.1; P < 0.05) on the one hand and of DQB1∗06 allele in HCV genotype 1 patients with sustained response than in HCV genotype 1 nonresponders (75% vs 27.3%, odds ration 7.9; P < 0.02) on the other hand, were observed. However, none of these two differences remained significant after Bonferroni’s correction.
Conclusion: Accordingly, we conclude that the response to IFN-α therapy is more tightly related to virus factors than to host’s HLA class II genes.
