According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.3 billion people live with some form of visual impairment. The results obtained with the dome implemented with 3D printing material ...and biopotential acquisition system evidences its good behavior according to the standards, besides the low cost and low profile, to perform clinical examinations.
The alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) haplotype Pi*S, when inherited along with the Pi*Z haplotype to form a Pi*SZ genotype, can be associated with pulmonary emphysema in regular smokers, and less frequently ...with liver disease, panniculitis, and systemic vasculitis in a small percentage of people, but this connection is less well established. Since the detection of cases can allow the application of preventive measures in patients and relatives with this congenital disorder, the objective of this study was to update the prevalence of the SZ genotype to achieve accurate estimates of the number of Pi*SZ subjects worldwide, based on studies performed according to the following criteria: 1) samples representative of the general population, 2) AAT phenotyping characterized by adequate methods, and 3) selection of studies with reliable results assessed with a coefficient of variation calculated from the sample size and 95% confidence intervals. Studies fulfilling these criteria were used to develop tables and maps with an inverse distance-weighted (IDW) interpolation method, to provide numerical and geographical information of the Pi*SZ distribution worldwide. A total of 262 cohorts from 71 countries were included in the analysis. With the data provided by these cohorts, a total of 1,490,816 Pi*SZ were estimated: 708,792 in Europe; 582,984 in America and Caribbean; 85,925 in Africa; 77,940 in Asia; and 35,176 in Australia and New Zealand. Remarkably, the IDW interpolation maps predicted the Pi*SZ prevalence throughout the entire world even in areas lacking real data. These results may be useful to plan strategies for future research, diagnosis, and management of affected individuals.
McArdle disease presents clinical and genetic heterogeneity. There is no obvious association between genotype and phenotype. PYGM (muscle glycogen phosphorylase gene) mRNA expression and its ...association with clinical, morphological, and genetic aspects of the disease as a set have not been studied previously. We investigated genetic variation in PYGM considering the number of PTCs (premature termination codon) per sample and compared mRNA expression in skeletal muscle samples from 15 patients with McArdle disease and 16 controls to PTCs number and different aspects of the disease. The main variant found was c.148C>T (PTC-premature termination codon). Patients with two PTCs showed 42% mRNA expression compared to the control group. Most cases showed an inversely proportional relation among PTCs and mRNA expression. Association between mRNA expression and other aspects of the disease showed no statistically significant difference (p> 0.05). mRNA expression is not useful as a predictor factor for the prognosis and severity of the disease. Different mechanisms as post-transcriptional events, epigenetics factors or protein function may be involved.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory non-contagious disease normally characterized by a multisystemic inflammation with reddish plaques and whitish scales with greater incidence in the ...knees, feet and hands, elbow, scalp, and sacral areas. The global incidence of psoriasis rounds about 2% of the population and it is established that the pathophysiology of this skin disease is quite complex and still misunderstood. Nowadays, this pathology still has no cure, however, efforts are being made to find more effective and safe treatments as well as trying to decrease the occurrence of crises and complications.
Nanotechnology is increasingly becoming an innovating and promising new approach for the study of various dermatological diseases, such as psoriasis. In this case, the interest in the use of nanocarriers arises in order to decrease the side effects associated with conventional therapy, as well as improve its effectiveness. Nanotechnology allows for better solubility and better delivery of the drugs, as well as an increase in their tolerance.
Besides psoriasis pathophysiology and its conventional treatments, this manuscript will also be present and discusse nanotechnological strategies for topical application that intend to increase the effectiveness of treatment, as well as its regulatory and toxicological context. Regulatory issues as well as nanotoxicological concerns and long-term safeness, both for the user and for the environment will be discussed.
Studies have shown that diterpenes have anti‐inflammatory and redox‐protective pharmacological activities. The present study aimed to investigate the anti‐inflammatory properties of phytol, a ...diterpene alcohol, in a mouse model of acute inflammation, and phytol effect on leukocyte recruitment, cytokines levels, and oxidative stress. The anti‐inflammatory activities of phytol were assessed by measuring paw edema induced by different inflammatory agents (e.g., λ‐carrageenan, compound 48/80, histamine, serotonin, bradykinin, and prostaglandin E2 PGE2), myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, peritonitis model and cytokine levels. Further, oxidative stress was evaluated by determining glutathione (GSH) levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. The results showed that phytol (7.5, 25, 50, and 75 mg/kg) significantly reduced carrageenan‐induced paw edema, in a dose‐dependent manner. In addition, phytol (75 mg/kg) inhibited compound 48/80‐, histamine‐, serotonin‐, bradykinin‐ and PGE2‐induced paw edema. It also inhibited the recruitment of total leukocytes and neutrophils; decreased MPO activity, tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α) and interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β) levels, and MDA concentration; and increased GSH levels during carrageenan‐induced acute inflammation. These results suggest that phytol attenuates the inflammatory response by inhibiting neutrophil migration that is partly caused by reduction in IL‐1β and TNF‐α levels and oxidative stress.
