Three cases of status epilepticus not responsive to an aggressive treatment are described. The seizures and EEG activity were rapidly brought under control with a continuous infusion of propofol (3-6 ...mg/kg/hour), maintained between 21 hours and 7 days. Patient awakening at the end of the infusion period was rapid and without sequelae.
The fine structure and specialized neuronal, vascular and ventricular relations of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunopositive neurons and processes were examined in the hypothalamus of the crested ...newt. TH-immunoreactive neurons form a well developed system. Its possible role in the hypothalamic neuroendocrine mechanisms is discussed.

Rossi ... et al..- Obsahuje ...seznam literatury- Fourier spectral analysis of fore arm skin laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) signal was performed in fifteen hypercholesterolemic patients (HP), without clinically manifest arterial diseases, and in fifteen age-matched healthy control subjects (CS), in order to investigate skin blood flowmotion (SBF). The LDF frequency intervals studied were: 0.01-1.6 Hz total spectrum, as well as 0.01-0.02 Hz (endothelial), 0.02-0. 06 Hz (sympathetic), 0.06-0.2 Hz (myogenic), 0.2-0.6 Hz (respiratory) and 0.6-1.6 Hz (cardiac). Skin microvascular reactivity (MVR ) to acetylcholine (ACh) and to sodium nitroprusside (SNP) iontophoresis was also investigated. HP showed a lower post-ACh increase in power spectral density (PSD) of the 0.01-0.02 Hz SBF subinterval compared to CS (1.80±1.73 PU 2 /Hz vs 3.59±1.78 PU 2 /Hz, respectively; p<0.005), while they did not differ in MVR from CS. In eleven HP the 0.01-0.02 Hz SBF subinterval showed a higher post-ACh PSD increase near to the statistical significance after 10 weeks of rosuvastatin therapy (10 mg/day) compared to pretreatment test (3.04±2.95 PU 2 /Hz vs 1.91±1.94 PU 2 /Hz; p=0.07). The blunted post-ACh increase in PSD of the 0.01-0.02 Hz SBF subinterval in HP suggests a skin endothelial dysfunction in these patients. This SBF abnormality showed a tendency to improve after rosuvastatin therapy in eleven treated patients.- All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. VEPs were examined in ALL patients in order to test their usefulness in the detection of early and late CNS changes due to combined cranial X-irradiation and chemotherapy. The results suggest that: ...a)in patients free from self limited somnolence syndrome and visual symptoms, the VEP latency may be increased, probably because of early subclinical CNS changes due to cranial irradiation. b)late CNS changes (detected by routine neurological examination, EEG and CAT) seem to be correlated with increased VEP latency, even in the absence of visual symptoms.
A study of VPA based on a comparison of mean plasma levels, plasma peak latency times and plasma half-lives after rectal and oral administration was conducted in 9 children between 6 months and 10 ...years of age suffering from various forms of epileptic seizure, before they received chronic VPA treatment. Each child received an oral dose of 20 mg/kg and after two days a rectal dose of 20 mg/kg and the mean plasma concentrations were determined at intervals for both modes of administration. An identical plasma concentration for both after 24 h showed that the quantity of drug absorbed was the same. The mean half-life varied according to age: 11 +/- 2 h for children over 3 years of age and 9 +/- 1 h for those under 3. The results of the study, in line with the few other available published data, thus confirm the validity of rectal VPA administration.
The measurement of the dispersion of the QT interval reflects regional repolarization differences in the heart which in turn can elicit the onset of arrhythmias by means of re-entry mechanism. ...Therefore, inter-lead QT dispersion has been proposed as novel indicator of arrhythmogenic risk that can predict severe ventricular arrhythmias or sudden death. The present study was conducted to evaluate QT dispersion in diabetic insulin-dependent patients with autonomic neuropathy.
We recruited three groups of 10 patients with the same age, sex, body weight distribution: 1) group DAN+ (diabetics with neuropathy); 2) group DAN- (diabetics without neuropathy); and 3) group CTRL (healthy control group). The patients underwent two-dimensional color-Doppler echocardiography and 12-lead electrocardiogram, 25 and 50 mm/s paper speed (gain 10 mm/mU). The QTc dispersion was determined as the difference between the maximum and the minimum value of the QTc interval in different leads of the ECG recording. QT interval was corrected (QTc) by heart rate according to the Bazett's formula. Cardiovascular autonomic function was evaluated by Ewing's tests (heart rate and blood pressure measurement during lying to standing, deep breathing, hand-grip isometric stress test and Valsalva's maneuver).
QT dispersion was significantly greater (p < 0.01) in the patients with autonomic neuropathy (51 +/- 10 ms) than in the patients without autonomic neuropathy (29 +/- 6 ms) or in healthy control subjects (26 +/- 5 ms).
Our data suggest that diabetic neuropathy, associated with an increased QT dispersion, shows a higher risk for serious ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.
Report of two cases of Behçet syndrome in children, one with the features of a neuro-Behçet syndrome and the other with chiefly severe ocular changes. Both children were treated with transfer factor ...when previous treatment had proved ineffective. Some years after the beginning of treatment, which is still continuing, transfer factor may be said to be of value in Behçet syndrome.
