Tropical South America is one of the three main centres of the global, zonal overturning circulation of the equatorial atmosphere (generally termed the 'Walker' circulation). Although this area plays ...a key role in global climate cycles, little is known about South American climate history. Here we describe sediment cores and down-hole logging results of deep drilling in the Salar de Uyuni, on the Bolivian Altiplano, located in the tropical Andes. We demonstrate that during the past 50,000 years the Altiplano underwent important changes in effective moisture at both orbital (20,000-year) and millennial timescales. Long-duration wet periods, such as the Last Glacial Maximum-marked in the drill core by continuous deposition of lacustrine sediments-appear to have occurred in phase with summer insolation maxima produced by the Earth's precessional cycle. Short-duration, millennial events correlate well with North Atlantic cold events, including Heinrich events 1 and 2, as well as the Younger Dryas episode. At both millennial and orbital timescales, cold sea surface temperatures in the high-latitude North Atlantic were coeval with wet conditions in tropical South America, suggesting a common forcing.
Abstract Context Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) plays a pivotal role in the management of locally advanced and metastatic prostate cancer (PCa). When and for how long to apply ADT have remained ...controversial issues. Objective To review randomised studies of ADT (orchiectomy or luteinising hormone-releasing hormone analogues) in PCa—both immediate and deferred/adjuvant studies—to elucidate a possible interaction between local treatment and ADT. Evidence acquisition Published randomised studies on ADT in various stages of PCa were included in this review. Evidence synthesis Studies of immediate versus deferred ADT without local treatment consistently showed only limited benefit for overall survival (OS; hazard ratio HR: 0.90; 95% confidence interval CI, 0.83–0.97) and cancer-specific survival (CSS; HR: 0.79; 95% CI, 0.71–0.89). In contrast, ADT as an adjuvant to radiation therapy in patients with high-risk localised disease or locally advanced disease was associated with substantial OS and CSS benefits. A similar benefit was seen in patients with proven systemic disease (node-positive patients after radical prostatectomy). Overall, the data suggest a clinically important survival benefit (HR for OS: 0.69; 95% CI, 0.61–0.79) when a local treatment has been applied to the primary tumour. Possible mechanisms of this therapeutic effect are discussed. Conclusions We conclude that an interaction between local treatment and ADT is suggested by this systematic review. In patients with advanced and aggressive disease who are at a high risk to die from PCa and who are treated for their primary tumour with curative intent, immediate and sustained ADT improves OS and CSS significantly. The local therapy in T3 and/or lymph node–positive disease is an essential part of the optimal treatment. However, this intensive treatment is unnecessary in a substantial number of patients with T3 and/or N1 disease with a slow natural history or high competing death risk.
We examine the relation between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at 8 μm and far-infrared emission from hot dust grains at 24 μm and from large dust grains at 160 and 250 μm in the ...nearby spiral galaxies NGC 2403 and M83 using data from the Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory. We find that the PAH emission in NGC 2403 is better correlated with emission at 250 μm from dust heated by the diffuse interstellar radiation field (ISRF) and that the 8/250-μm surface brightness ratio is well correlated with the stellar surface brightness as measured at 3.6 μm. This implies that the PAHs in NGC 2403 are intermixed with cold large dust grains in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) and that the PAHs are excited by the diffuse ISRF. In M83, the PAH emission appears more strongly correlated with 160 μm emission originating from large dust grains heated by star-forming regions. However, the PAH emission in M83 is low where the 24-μm emission peaks within star-forming regions, and enhancements in the 8/160-μm surface brightness ratios appear offset relative to the dust and the star-forming regions within the spiral arms. This suggests that the PAHs observed in the 8 μm band are not excited locally within star-forming regions but either by light escaping non-axisymmetrically from star-forming regions or locally by young, non-photoionizing stars that have migrated downstream from the spiral density waves. The results from just these two galaxies show that PAHs may be excited by different stellar populations in different spiral galaxies.
Abstract Surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) is a common treatment to correct transverse maxillary deficiencies. Finite element analysis was simulated for six designs of SARPE based ...on a computed tomography scan of a human skull: median osteotomy with palatal (type A) or alveolar ridge (type B) bone-borne force, additional lateral osteotomy with palatal (type C) or alveolar ridge (type D) bone-borne force, and additional pterygomaxillary separation with palatal (type E) or alveolar ridge (type F) bone-borne force. The transverse expansion was about 1.0 mm. The distribution of von Mises stress and the displacement were evaluated. The largest stress distribution was after types A and B, followed by types C and D, and finally types E and F. Displacement increased simultaneously. Palatal bone-borne forces (types A, C, and E) led to higher stress distributions in the midface and maxilla, but to a more parallel expansion compared with alveolar ridge-borne forces (types B, D, and F). The largest bony displacements at the midpalatal suture were anterior in all models. Increased weakening of the bony pillar of the facial skeleton and the use of palatal bone-borne forces leads to a decrease in stress distribution in the midface and to a more parallel transverse expansion of the maxilla.
Mouse-to-rat cardiac transplants survive long term after transient complement depletion by cobra venom factor and T cell immunosuppression by cyclosporin A. Expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) by ...the graft vasculature is critical to achieve graft survival. In the present study, we asked whether this protective effect was attributable to the generation of one of the catabolic products of HO-1, carbon monoxide (CO). Our present data suggests that this is the case. Under the same immunosuppressive regimen that allows mouse-to-rat cardiac transplants to survive long term (i.e., cobra venom factor plus cyclosporin A), inhibition of HO-1 activity by tin protoporphyrin, caused graft rejection in 3--7 days. Rejection was associated with widespread platelet sequestration, thrombosis of coronary arterioles, myocardial infarction, and apoptosis of endothelial cells as well as cardiac myocytes. Under inhibition of HO-1 activity by tin protoporphyrin, exogenous CO suppressed graft rejection and restored long-term graft survival. This effect of CO was associated with inhibition of platelet aggregation, thrombosis, myocardial infarction, and apoptosis. We also found that expression of HO-1 by endothelial cells in vitro inhibits platelet aggregation and protects endothelial cells from apoptosis. Both these actions of HO-1 are mediated through the generation of CO. These data suggests that HO-1 suppresses the rejection of mouse-to-rat cardiac transplants through a mechanism that involves the generation of CO. Presumably CO suppresses graft rejection by inhibiting platelet aggregation that facilitates vascular thrombosis and myocardial infarction. Additional mechanisms by which CO overcomes graft rejection may involve its ability to suppress endothelial cell apoptosis.
In this paper we present a catalog of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Andromeda (M31) galaxy extracted from the Herschel Exploitation of Local Galaxy Andromeda (HELGA) data set. GMCs are ...identified from the Herschel maps using a hierarchical source extraction algorithm. We present the results of this new catalog and characterize the spatial distribution and spectral energy properties of its clouds based on the radial dust/gas properties found by Smith et al. A total of 326 GMCs in the mass range 10 super(4)-10 super(7) M sub(middot in circle) are identified; their cumulative mass distribution is found to be proportional to M super(-2.34), in agreement with earlier studies. The GMCs appear to follow the same correlation of cloud mass to L sub(CO) observed in the Milky Way. However, comparison between this catalog and interferometry studies also shows that the GMCs are substructured below the Herschel resolution limit, suggesting that we are observing associations of GMCs. Following Gordon et al., we study the spatial structure of M31 by splitting the observed structure into a set of spiral arms and offset rings. We fit radii of 10.3 and 15.5 kpc to the two most prominent rings. We then fit a logarithmic spiral with a pitch angle of 8.degrees9 to the GMCs not associated with either ring. Last, we comment on the effects of deprojection on our results and investigate the effect different models for M31's inclination will have on the projection of an unperturbed spiral arm system.
Three-dimensional modeling of lake morphometry enables the calculation of lake volume, planar surface area, and basin surface area, which are critical components of a conceptual model of how planktic ...and benthic habitat areas change with changing lake level. We have applied three-dimensional modeling to Foy Lake, Montana, and compared model results of changing ratios of planktic and benthic habitat areas at all possible lake levels to sediment cores recovered from the lake. The model allows us to produce semiquantitative depth reconstructions and greatly improves lake-level reconstruction of this morphometrically complex basin. The conceptual model also was modified to examine the influence of resuspension versus gravity redistribution of diatomaceous material on the sedimentary record. Comparison of the model results with both long and short sedimentary records from Foy Lake, Montana, suggests that planktic: benthic ratios may be a better predictor of mean lake depth than maximum lake depth. The model developed here is simple enough to be easily implemented, has few requirements, can be adapted to suit any lake basin, and can be augmented to examine a variety of different lake processes that affect habitat availability.
Glaciation in the humid tropical Andes is a sensitive indicator of mean annual temperature. Here, we present sedimentological data from lakes beyond the glacial limit in the tropical Andes indicating ...that deglaciation from the Last Glacial Maximum led substantial warming at high northern latitudes. Deglaciation from glacial maximum positions at Lake Titicaca, Peru/Bolivia (16°S), and Lake Junin, Peru (11°S), occurred 22,000 to 19,500 calendar years before the present, several thousand years before the Bølling-Allerød warming of the Northern Hemisphere and deglaciation of the Sierra Nevada, United States (36.5° to 38°N). The tropical Andes deglaciated while climatic conditions remained regionally wet, which reflects the dominant control of mean annual temperature on tropical glaciation.
