Abstract Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterized by difficulty discarding, clutter, and frequently excessive acquiring. Theories have pointed to intense negative emotional reactions (e.g., sadness) ...as one factor that may play a critical role in HD's etiology. Preliminary work with an analogue sample indicated that more intense negative emotions following emotional films were linked with greater hoarding symptoms. Symptom provocation imaging studies with HD patients have also found evidence for excessive activation in brain regions implicated in processing emotions. The current study utilized a sample with self-reported serious hoarding difficulties to examine how hoarding symptoms related to both general and hoarding-related emotional reactivity, taking into account the specificity of these relationships. We also examined how two cognitive factors, fear of decision-making and confidence in memory, modified this relationship. 628 participants with self-identified hoarding difficulties completed questionnaires about general emotional reactivity, depression, anxiety, decision-making, and confidence in memory. To assess hoarding-related emotional reactivity, participants reported their emotional reactions when imagining discarding various items. Heightened general emotional reactivity and more intense emotional reactions to imagined discarding were associated with both difficulty discarding and acquisition, but not clutter, controlling for age, gender, and co-occurring mood and anxiety symptoms. Fear of decision-making and confidence in memory interacted with general emotional reactivity to predict hoarding symptoms. These findings provide support for cognitive-behavioral models of hoarding. Experimental research should be conducted to discover whether emotional reactivity increases vulnerability for HD. Future work should also examine whether emotional reactivity should be targeted in interventions for hoarding.
Fast-neutron/gamma-ray pulse-shape discrimination has been performed for the organic liquid scintillators NE 213A and EJ 305 using a time-of-flight based neutron-tagging technique and waveform ...digitization on an event-by-event basis. Gamma-ray sources and a Geant4-based simulation were used to calibrate the scintillation-light yield. The difference in pulse shape for the neutron and gamma-ray events was analyzed by integrating selected portions of the digitized waveform to produce a figure-of-merit for neutron/gamma-ray separation. This figure-of-merit has been mapped as a function of detector threshold and also of neutron energy determined from time-of-flight. It shows clearly that the well-established pulse-shape discrimination capabilities of NE 213A are superior to those of EJ 305. The extra information provided by the neutron-tagging technique has resulted in a far more detailed assessment of the pulse-shape-discrimination capabilities of these organic scintillators.
Described as the "proteasome of the membrane" or the "scissors in the membrane," γ-secretase has notoriously complicated biology, and even after decades of research, the full extent of its regulatory ...mechanism remains unclear. γ-Secretase is an intramembrane aspartyl protease complex composed of four obligatory subunits: Nicastrin (NCT), Presenilin (PS), Presenilin Enhancer-2 (Pen-2), and Anterior pharynx-defective-1 (Aph-1). γ-Secretase cleaves numerous type 1 transmembrane substrates, with no apparent homology, and plays major roles in broad biological pathways such as development, neurogenesis, and cancer. Notch and the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and are undoubtedly the best-studied γ-secretase substrates because of their role in cancer and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and therefore became the focus of increasing studies as an attractive therapeutic target. The regulation of γ-secretase is intricate and involves the function of multiple cellular entities. Recently, γ-secretase modulatory proteins (GSMPs), which are non-essential subunits and yet modulate γ-secretase activity and specificity, have emerged as an important component in guiding γ-secretase. GSMPs are responsive to cellular and environmental changes and therefore, provide another layer of regulation of γ-secretase. This type of enzymatic regulation allows for a rapid and fine-tuning of γ-secretase activity when appropriate signals appear enabling a temporal level of regulation. In this review article, we discuss the latest developments on GSMPs and implications on the development of effective therapeutics for γ-secretase-associated diseases such as AD and cancer.
The Raman spectroscopy of selected minerals of the corrosion products has been measured including nantokite, eriochalcite, claringbullite, atacamite, paratacamite, clinoatacamite and brochantite and ...related minerals. The free energy of formation shows that each mineral is stable relative to copper metal. The mineral, which is formed in copper corrosion, depends on the kinetics and conditions of the reaction. Raman spectroscopy clearly identifies each mineral by its characteristic Raman spectrum. The Raman spectrum is related to the mineral structure and bands are assigned to CuCl stretching and bending modes and to SO stretching modes. Clinoatacamite is identified as the polymorph of atacamite and not paratacamite. Paratacamite is a separate mineral with a similar but different structure to that of atacamite.
In many IBA applications the aim is to obtain quantitative figures characterising the sample, usually requiring a reliable measurement of the beam current for normalisation. To avoid the drawbacks ...associated with on-sample and post-sample charge measurement systems a pre-sample measurement system can be used.
In this work an upgrade to the pre-sample charge measurement system at the Lund Ion-beam Analysis Facility is presented, in which a custom built control module based around a Teensy 3.2 micro-controller has been added to the existing system. The new control module allows for remote handling and monitoring of the deflection system, operated via USB connection to a PC running a graphical user interface. Details of the control modules functionality, design and programming are given, as well as the functionality of the user interface. An example of how the new control module can be used for automated calibration of the deflection system is also presented.
Pneumococcus is a commensal of the upper respiratory tract and colonization is common in young children. Carriage studies have provided insights on vaccine effects in children and may also be useful ...for assessing vaccines in adults. However, culture based prevalence studies in older adults describe low colonization rates. Therefore, we assessed cumulative incidence of pneumococcal colonization in older adults using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the lytA gene and risk factors for carriage.
100 community-dwelling adults ≥65 years were enrolled the winter of 2015 and followed biweekly for 12 months. Medical, vaccination and illness history as well as nasopharyngeal (NP) and oropharyngeal (OP) samples were collected. Combined OP and NP were incubated in enrichment broth and screened using real-time lytA PCR. Samples from new colonization events (lytA PCR+) were cultured on gentamicin blood agar plates. Isolates identified by colony morphology as S. pneumoniae were serotyped using a multiplex combined immunoassay-PCR platform which classifies 96 serotypes. Cumulative incidence of pneumococcal carriage was calculated and risk factors for carriage assessed.
The cumulative incidence of colonization was 41% by PCR and 14% by culture. Monthly prevalence ranged from 0 to 17% by PCR and 1 to 4% by culture with peaks in the spring and fall. Demographics were similar between colonized and never colonized subjects although colonized were younger (72.4 vs. 75.0 years, P = 0.06). Vaccination with any pneumococcal vaccine before or during study period was associated with decreased risk of becoming colonized (p < 0.001) as was vaccination with either the 13-valent conjugated pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13) or 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) (p < 0.001).
Pneumococcal colonization in older adults as detected by lytA PCR is frequent and pneumococcal vaccination appears to be associated with decreased risk of carriage. Further study is needed to understand the biological significance of molecular detection of pneumococcus in adults.

Six groups of tree shrews (n = 7 per group) were used. Starting 24 days after normal eye-opening (days of visual experience DVE), two minus-lens groups wore a monocular -5 diopter (D) lens for 2 days (ML-2) or 4 days (ML-4); two form-deprivation groups wore a monocular translucent diffuser for 2 days (FD-2) or 4 days (FD-4). A dark-treatment (DK) group was placed in continuous darkness for 11 days after experiencing a light/dark environment until 17 DVE. A normal colony-reared group was examined at 28 DVE. Quantitative PCR was used to measure the relative differences in mRNA levels for 55 candidate genes in the sclera that were selected, either because they showed differential expression changes in previous ML studies or because a whole-transcriptome analysis suggested they would change during myopia development.
The treated eyes in all groups responded with a significant myopic shift, indicating that the myopia was actively progressing. In the ML-2 group, 27 genes were significantly downregulated in the treated eyes, relative to control eyes. In the treated eyes of the FD-2 group, 16 of the same genes also were significantly downregulated and one was upregulated. The two gene expression patterns were significantly correlated (r(2) = 0.90, P < 0.001). After 4 days of treatment, 31 genes were significantly downregulated in the treated eyes of the ML-4 group and three were upregulated. Twenty-nine of the same genes (26 down- and 3 up-regulated) and six additional genes (all downregulated) were significantly affected in the FD-4 group. The response patterns were highly correlated (r(2) = 0.95, P < 0.001). When the DK group (mean of right and left eyes) was compared to the control eyes of the ML-4 group, the direction and magnitude of the gene expression patterns were similar to those of the ML-4 (r(2) = 0.82, P < 0.001, excluding PENK). Similar patterns also were found when the treated eyes of the ML-4, FD-4, and DK groups were compared to the age-matched normal eyes.
The very similar gene expression signatures produced in the sclera by the three different myopiagenic visual conditions at different time points suggests that there is a "scleral remodeling signature" in this mammal, closely related to primates. The scleral genes examined did not distinguish between the specific visual stimuli that initiate the signaling cascade that results in axial elongation and myopia.
A growing area of interest is HVDC supplies. This paper represents an initial study into possible designs of HVDC transformers that could provide 2 A at 1 MV, with the added specification that any ...proposed technology should be scalable to 5 A at 5 MV. Insulated core transformers (ICTs) have been initially selected as a potentially suitable technology. Careful design of the ICT magnetic core is required to ensure that flux loss is limited so that higher voltages are achievable. Simulation studies have shown that the voltage produced in an ICT does not scale linearly, meaning that there is an effective limit to the voltage that they can produce. In addition to this, a technique is proposed to increase the available current output of an ICT. The full analysis is presented in this paper.
This paper reviews the synthesis and the absorbing properties of the wide variety of porous sorbent materials that have been studied for application in the removal of organics, particularly in the ...area of oil spill cleanup. The discussion is especially focused on hydrophobic silica aerogels, zeolites, organoclays and natural sorbents many of which have been demonstrated to exhibit (or show potential to exhibit) excellent oil absorption properties. This work investigates the suitability of printed circuit boards (PCBs) for use as windings in a high voltage electronic transformer. To do this, the turns of a transformer winding have been split ...into separate elements, these being: straight lengths of track; curved lengths of track representing turns close to the transformer core; and curved lengths of track representing turns on the outside of the winding. It is shown that PCBs are capable of insulating against potential differences of several kilovolts between parallel windings. This value can be significantly increased with the inclusion of a soldermask. This suggests that PCBs can be used in the construction of transformer windings designed to operate at tens of kilovolts across the whole board.
