There is increasing awareness of the need to monitor trends in our constantly changing agricultural landscapes. Monitoring programmes often use remote sensing data and focus on changes in land ...cover/land use in relation to values such as biodiversity, cultural heritage and recreation. Although a wide range of indicators is in use, landscape aesthetics is a topic that is frequently neglected. Our aim was to determine whether aspects of landscape content and configuration could be used as surrogate measures for visual landscape quality in monitoring programmes based on remote sensing. In this paper, we test whether map-derived indicators of landscape structure from the Norwegian monitoring programme for agricultural landscapes are correlated with visual landscape preferences. Two groups of people participated: (1) locals and (2) non-local students. Using the total dataset, we found significant positive correlations between preferences and spatial metrics, including number of land types, number of patches and land type diversity. In addition, preference scores were high where water was present within the mapped image area, even if the water itself was not visible in the images. When the dataset was split into two groups, we found no significant correlation between the preference scores of the students and locals. Whilst the student group preferred images portraying diverse and heterogeneous landscapes, neither diversity nor heterogeneity was correlated with the preference scores of the locals. We conclude that certain indicators based on spatial structure also have relevance in relation to landscape preferences in agricultural landscapes. However, the finding that different groups of people prefer different types of landscape underlines the need for care when interpreting indicator values.
Phytophthora infestans has been a named pathogen for well over 150 years and yet it continues to "emerge", with thousands of articles published each year on it and the late blight disease that it ...causes. This review explores five attributes of this oomycete pathogen that maintain this constant attention. First, the historical tragedy associated with this disease (Irish potato famine) causes many people to be fascinated with the pathogen. Current technology now enables investigators to answer some questions of historical significance. Second, the devastation caused by the pathogen continues to appear in surprising new locations or with surprising new intensity. Third, populations of P. infestans worldwide are in flux, with changes that have major implications to disease management. Fourth, the genomics revolution has enabled investigators to make tremendous progress in terms of understanding the molecular biology (especially the pathogenicity) of P. infestans. Fifth, there remain many compelling unanswered questions.
The matter in extreme conditions end station at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a new tool enabling accurate pump-probe measurements for studying the physical properties of matter in the ...high-energy density (HED) physics regime. This instrument combines the world's brightest x-ray source, the LCLS x-ray beam, with high-power lasers consisting of two nanosecond Nd:glass laser beams and one short-pulse Ti:sapphire laser. These lasers produce short-lived states of matter with high pressures, high temperatures or high densities with properties that are important for applications in nuclear fusion research, laboratory astrophysics and the development of intense radiation sources. In the first experiments, we have performed highly accurate x-ray diffraction and x-ray Thomson scattering measurements on shock-compressed matter resolving the transition from compressed solid matter to a co-existence regime and into the warm dense matter state. These complex charged-particle systems are dominated by strong correlations and quantum effects. They exist in planetary interiors and laboratory experiments, e.g., during high-power laser interactions with solids or the compression phase of inertial confinement fusion implosions. Applying record peak brightness x-rays resolves the ionic interactions at atomic (Ångstrom) scale lengths and measure the static structure factor, which is a key quantity for determining equation of state data and important transport coefficients. Simultaneously, spectrally resolved measurements of plasmon features provide dynamic structure factor information that yield temperature and density with unprecedented precision at micron-scale resolution in dynamic compression experiments. These studies have demonstrated our ability to measure fundamental thermodynamic properties that determine the state of matter in the HED physics regime.
Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, has emerged as the most destructive disease of potato and tomato in South India since 2008. One hundred and fifty‐seven isolates of Phytophthora ...infestans, 63 from potato and 94 from tomato, were collected from major potato and tomato production areas of South India between 2010 and 2012. Their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics were determined and compared with reference isolates. Isolates were characterized based on mating type, in vitro metalaxyl sensitivity, mitochondrial DNA haplotype, RG57 DNA fingerprinting patterns, SSR markers and aggressiveness on potato and tomato, in order to monitor population changes in P. infestans. All isolates were A2 mating type, metalaxyl resistant, mtDNA haplotype Ia and had RG57 and SSR fingerprints almost identical to the 13_A2 clonal lineage reported in Europe. Variation at the D13 and SSR4 loci allowed discrimination of minor variants, designated as 13_A2_3, 13_A2_3b, 13_A2_3c and 13_A2_1. A comparison of the lesion diameters caused by 157 isolates on detached leaflets of three potato and tomato cultivars showed all isolates to be equally aggressive, confirming that the same clonal population is infecting both hosts. This study demonstrates that the 13_A2 lineage was responsible for severe late blight outbreaks on potato and tomato in South India and has replaced the prior population represented by the US‐1 and other genotypes. Revised management strategies will be required to combat this destructive 13_A2 clonal lineage and monitoring of the population across other potato‐ and tomato‐growing regions of India is warranted.
Late blight of potato, caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans, is a devastating disease that can cause the rapid death of plants. To investigate the molecular basis of this compatible ...interaction, potato cDNA microarrays were utilized to identify genes that were differentially expressed in the host during a compatible interaction with P. infestans. Of the 7,680 cDNA clones represented on the array, 643 (12.9%) were differentially expressed in infected plants as compared with mock-inoculated control plants. These genes were classified into eight groups using a nonhierarchical clustering method with two clusters (358 genes) generally down-regulated, three clusters (241 genes) generally up-regulated, and three clusters (44 genes) with a significant change in expression at only one timepoint. Three genes derived from two down-regulated clusters were evaluated further, using reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. For these analyses, both incompatible and compatible interactions were included to determine if suppression of these genes was specific to compatibility. One gene, plastidic carbonic anhydrase (CA), was found to have a very different expression pattern in compatible vs. incompatible interactions. Virus-induced gene silencing was used to suppress expression of this gene in Nicotiana benthamiana. In CA-silenced plants, the pathogen grew more quickly, indicating that suppression of CA increases susceptibility to P. infestans.
The roundworm C. elegans reversibly arrests larval development during starvation 1, but extended early-life starvation reduces reproductive success 2, 3. Maternal dietary restriction (DR) buffers ...progeny from starvation as young larvae, preserving reproductive success 4. However, the developmental basis of reduced fertility following early-life starvation is unknown, and it is unclear how maternal diet modifies developmental physiology in progeny. We show here that extended starvation in first-stage (L1) larvae followed by unrestricted feeding results in a variety of developmental abnormalities in the reproductive system, including proliferative germ-cell tumors and uterine masses that express neuronal and epidermal cell fate markers. We found that maternal DR and reduced maternal insulin/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling (IIS) increase oocyte provisioning of vitellogenin lipoprotein, reducing penetrance of starvation-induced abnormalities in progeny, including tumors. Furthermore, we show that maternal DR and reduced maternal IIS reduce IIS in progeny. daf-16/FoxO and skn-1/Nrf, transcriptional effectors of IIS, are required in progeny for maternal DR and increased vitellogenin provisioning to suppress starvation-induced abnormalities. daf-16/FoxO activity in somatic tissues is sufficient to suppress starvation-induced abnormalities, suggesting cell-nonautonomous regulation of reproductive system development. This work reveals that early-life starvation compromises reproductive development and that vitellogenin-mediated intergenerational insulin/IGF-to-insulin/IGF signaling mediates adaptation to nutrient availability.

Jordan et al. show that early-life starvation causes reproductive abnormalities in C. elegans but that maternal dietary restriction increases progeny starvation resistance. Dietary restriction and reduced insulin/IGF signaling increase maternal vitellogenin provisioning, which activates daf-16/FoxO in progeny to confer protection from starvation.
Estimation of genotypic diversity is an important component of the analysis of the genetic structure of plant pathogen and microbial populations. Estimates of genotypic diversity are a function of ...both the number of genotypes observed in a sample (genotype richness) and the evenness of distribution of genotypes within the sample. Currently used measures of genotypic diversity have inherent problems that could lead to incorrect conclusions, particularly when diversity is low or sample sizes differ. The number of genotypes observed in a sample depends on the technique used to assay for genetic variation; each technique will affect the maximum number of genotypes that can be detected. We developed an approach to analysis of genotypic diversity in plant pathology that makes specific reference to the techniques used for identifying genotypes. Preferably, populations that are being compared should be very similar in sample size. In this case, the number of genotypes observed can be used directly for comparing richness. In most cases, sample sizes differ and use of the rarefaction method to calculate richness is more appropriate. In all cases, scaling either Stoddart and Taylor's G or Shannon and Wiener's H' by sample size should be avoided. Under those circumstances where it might be important to distinguish whether richness or evenness contribute more to diversity, a bootstrapping approach, where confidence intervals are calculated for indices of diversity and evenness, is recommended.
