We examined the efficacy and acceptability of non-invasive brain stimulation in adult unipolar and bipolar depression. Randomised sham-controlled trials of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and theta-burst stimulation (TBS), without co-initiation of another treatment, were included. We analysed effects on response, remission, all-cause discontinuation rates and continuous depression severity measures. Fifty-six studies met our criteria for inclusion (N = 3058, mean age = 44.96 years, 61.73% female). Response rates demonstrated efficacy of high-frequency rTMS over the left DLPFC (OR = 3.75, 95% CI 2.44; 5.75), right-sided low-frequency rTMS (OR = 7.44, 95%CI 2.06; 26.83) bilateral rTMS (OR = 3.68,95%CI 1.66; 8.13), deep TMS (OR = 1.69, 95%CI 1.003; 2.85), intermittent TBS (OR = 4.70, 95%CI 1.14; 19.38) and tDCS (OR = 4.17, 95% CI 2.25; 7.74); but not for continuous TBS, bilateral TBS or synchronised TMS. There were no differences in all-cause discontinuation rates. The strongest evidence was for high-frequency rTMS over the left DLPFC. Intermittent TBS provides an advance in terms of reduced treatment duration. tDCS is a potential treatment for non-treatment resistant depression. To date, there is not sufficient published data available to draw firm conclusions about the efficacy and acceptability of TBS and sTMS.
Background
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is having a profound impact on the health and development of children worldwide. There is limited evidence on the impact of COVID-19 and ...its related school closures and disease-containment measures on the psychosocial wellbeing of children; little research has been done on the characteristics of vulnerable groups and factors that promote resilience.
Methods
We conducted a large-scale cross-sectional population study of Hong Kong families with children aged 2–12 years. Parents completed an online survey on family demographics, child psychosocial wellbeing, functioning and lifestyle habits, parent–child interactions, and parental stress during school closures due to COVID-19. We used simple and multiple linear regression analyses to explore factors associated with child psychosocial problems and parental stress during the pandemic.
Results
The study included 29,202 individual families; of which 12,163 had children aged 2–5 years and 17,029 had children aged 6–12 years. The risk of child psychosocial problems was higher in children with special educational needs, and/or acute or chronic disease, mothers with mental illness, single-parent families, and low-income families. Delayed bedtime and/or inadequate sleep or exercise duration, extended use of electronic devices were associated with significantly higher parental stress and more psychosocial problems among pre-schoolers.
Conclusions
This study identifies vulnerable groups of children and highlights the importance of strengthening family coherence, adequate sleep and exercise, and responsible use of electronic devices in promoting psychosocial wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On 6 March 2015, Dawn arrived at Ceres to find a dark, desiccated surface punctuated by small, bright areas. Parts of Ceres' surface are heavily cratered, but the largest expected craters are absent. ...Ceres appears gravitationally relaxed at only the longest wavelengths, implying a mechanically strong lithosphere with a weaker deep interior. Ceres' dry exterior displays hydroxylated silicates, including ammoniated clays of endogenous origin. The possibility of abundant volatiles at depth is supported by geomorphologie features such as flat crater floors with pits, lobate flows of materials, and a singular mountain that appears to be an extrusive cryovolcanic dome. On one occasion, Ceres temporarily interacted with the solar wind, producing a bow shock accelerating electrons to energies of tens of kilovolts.
A high O3 episode was detected in urban Shanghai, a typical city in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in August 2010. The CMAQ integrated process rate method is applied to account for the ...contribution of different atmospheric processes during the high pollution episode. The analysis shows that the maximum concentration of ozone occurs due to transport phenomena, including vertical diffusion and horizontal advective transport. Gas-phase chemistry producing O3 mainly occurs at the height of 300–1500 m, causing a strong vertical O3 transport from upper levels to the surface layer. The gas-phase chemistry is an important sink for O3 in the surface layer, coupled with dry deposition. Cloud processes may contribute slightly to the increase of O3 due to convective clouds or to the decrease of O3 due to scavenging. The horizontal diffusion and heterogeneous chemistry contributions are negligible during the whole episode. Modeling results show that the O3 pollution characteristics among the different cities in the YRD region have both similarities and differences. During the buildup period, the O3 starts to appear in the city regions of the YRD and is then transported to the surrounding areas under the prevailing wind conditions. The O3 production from photochemical reaction in Shanghai and the surrounding area is most significant, due to the high emission intensity in the large city; this ozone is then transported out to sea by the westerly wind flow, and later diffuses to rural areas like Chongming island, Wuxi and even to Nanjing. The O3 concentrations start to decrease in the cities after sunset, due to titration of the NO emissions, but ozone can still be transported and maintain a significant concentration in rural areas and even regions outside the YRD region, where the NO emissions are very small.

This study aimed to understand the effects of nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) on nutrient-involved biogeochemical processes and the consequences in the continental margin off Dongsha Atoll (DA) in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). Shipboard and mooring observations were conducted to determine hydrological and biogeochemical conditions mainly from two transects covering the DA-associated upper slope, shelf break, and shelf zones. A dense array of thermistor moorings and a temperature-fluorescence-sediment trap array were deployed on the same transect to determine the short-period variability of transport and shoaling of NLIWs across the shelf and to link physical variability to biogeochemical consequences induced by NLIW events. The shoaling of NLIWs appeared to uplift cooler and nutrient-rich subsurface water into the nutrient-deplete surface in shelf and nearshore environments as well as increase nutrient concentrations and biological production. We observed shoaling events that induced a notable range of upward fluxes in nitrate and nitrite (0.42–2.92 mmol N m−2 d−1) onto the euphotic zone to enhance and sustain new production, depending on the strength of shoaling activity in various observations. The shoaling-derived new production may fully elucidate the amount of sinking fluxes of particulate organic carbon measured from the shoaling field. According to short-time sequential observations during the passage of a single NLIW, the depressed waves may play a crucial role in enhancing the vertical transfers of surface-replete dissolved gases, carbon, or suspended constituents through the surface layers of stratified waters. This NLIW forcing appears to be effective in supplying cooler and nutrient-rich water to the DA-associated coral community, and this may be vital for improving the future development and conservation of the coral ecosystem.
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) disrupts spinal alignment and increases the intrinsic demand for active stabilization to maintain postural stability. Understanding the paraspinal muscle ...fatigability and its effects on spinal alignment and kinematics informs the importance of paraspinal muscle endurance for postural stability. This study aims to investigate the effects of fatigue of thoracic erector spinae on the spinal muscle activity and spinal kinematics in individuals with scoliosis. Spinal muscle activity, posture and mobility measured by electromyography and surface tomography were compared between 15 participants with scoliosis and 15 age- and gender-matched healthy controls during unilateral shoulder flexion and abduction with and without holding a 2-kg weight and performed before and after a fatigue task (prone isometric chest raise). No between-groups difference was found for the spinal extensor endurance. Erector spinae activity at the convex side of AIS group was significantly higher than that at their concave side and than that of healthy controls during shoulder elevations, regardless of the fatigue status. Significant decreases in translational and rotational mobility were found at convex side of AIS group during weighted abduction tasks after fatigue. In contrast, a significant increase in rotational mobility was demonstrated at convex side of AIS participants during weighted flexion tasks after fatigue. Our results revealed a comparable level of spinal extensor endurance between individuals with or without AIS. The increase in muscle activation post-fatigue provides no additional active postural stability but may increase the risk of back pain over the convex side in individuals with scoliosis. Findings highlight imbalances in muscles and the potential implications in optimising neuromuscular activation and endurance capacity in the rehabilitation for AIS patients. Future research is needed to investigate if endurance training of the convex-sided back extensors could optimize the impaired neuromuscular control in the AIS patients.
Diabetes is associated with macrovascular and microvascular complications and is a major risk factor for neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as dementia and depression. Type 1 diabetes ...(T1DM) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have distinct etiologies and pathophysiological effects while sharing a common endpoint of persistent hyperglycemia. Neuroimaging studies in T1DM have revealed reductions in numerous regions, including the parahippocampal and occipital regions, while in T2DM there have been numerous reports of hippocampal atrophy. This meta-analysis aimed to identify consistent regional abnormalities in cerebral structures in T1DM and T2DM respectively, and also to examine the impact of potential confounds, including age, depression and vascular risk factors. = 1364 patients) fulfilled inclusion criteria. The T1DM meta-analysis revealed reduced bilateral thalamus grey matter density in adults. The T2DM meta-analysis revealed reduced global brain volume and regional atrophy in the hippocampi, basal ganglia, and orbitofrontal and occipital lobes. Moreover, hippocampal atrophy in T2DM was not modified by hypertension, although there were more marked reductions in younger patients relative to healthy controls. In conclusion, T1DM and T2DM demonstrated distinct cerebral effects with generalised and specific target areas of grey matter reduction. Thalamic atrophy in T1DM may be a substrate of associated cognitive deficits. In T2DM, global cerebral atrophy may reflect atherosclerotic factors, while hippocampal atrophy was an independent effect providing a potential common neuropathological etiology for the comorbidity of T2DM with dementia and depression.
Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (neo-CRT) followed by surgery has been shown to improve esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients' survival compared with surgery alone. However, the outcomes ...of CRT are heterogeneous, and no clinical or pathological method can currently predict CRT response. In this study, we aim to identify mRNA markers useful for ESCC CRT-response prediction.
Gene expression analyses were carried out on pretreated cancer biopsies from 28 ESCCs who received neo-CRT and surgery. Surgical specimens were assessed for pathological response to CRT. The differentially expressed genes identified by expression profiling were validated by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and a classifying model was built from qPCR data using Fisher's linear discriminant analysis. The predictive power of this model was further assessed in a second set of 32 ESCCs.
The profiling of the 28 ESCCs identified 10 differentially expressed genes with more than a twofold change between patients with pathological complete response (pCR) and less than pCR (<pCR). A prediction model based on the qPCR values of three genes was generated, which provided a predictive accuracy of 86% upon leave-one-out cross-validation. Furthermore, the predictive power of this model was validated in another cohort of 32 ESCCs, among which a predictive accuracy of 81% was achieved. Importantly, the discriminant score was found to be the only independent factor that affected neo-CRT response in both the training (P = 0.015) and validation (P = 0.017) sets, respectively.
The expression levels of three genes determined by qPCR provide a possible model for ESCC CRT prediction, which will facilitate the individualization of ESCC treatment. Further prospective validation in larger independent cohorts is necessary to fully assess its predictive power.

A γ-Fe2O3/SiO2/chitosan composite was prepared by water-in-oil emulsification, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Effects of various factors, including adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, solution pH, and competing anions, on the adsorption of methyl orange from aqueous solutions by the resulting composite were studied by batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and intraparticle diffusion was related to the adsorption, but not as a sole rate-controlling step. The equilibrium adsorption data were well described by the Freundlich isotherm model. Evaluation of the thermodynamic parameters ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° revealed that the adsorption process was naturally feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic. The composite was proven to be efficient, suitable and promising for the removal of methyl orange from aqueous solutions since it has a relatively higher adsorption capacity than other low-cost adsorbents.
A magnetic reconnection event detected by Cluster is analyzed using three methods: Single‐spacecraft Inference based on Flow‐reversal Sequence (SIFS), Multispacecraft Inference based on Timing a ...Structure (MITS), and the First‐Order Taylor Expansion (FOTE). Using the SIFS method, we find that the reconnection structure is an X line; while using the MITS and FOTE methods, we find it is a magnetic island (O line). We compare the efficiency and accuracy of these three methods and find that the most efficient and accurate approach to identify a reconnection event is FOTE. In both the guide and nonguide field reconnection regimes, the FOTE method is equally applicable. This study for the first time demonstrates the capability of FOTE in identifying magnetic reconnection events; it would be useful to the forthcoming Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission.
