Bismuth (Bi) has been considered as a promising alloying-type anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), owing to its high theoretical capacity and suitable working voltage plateaus. However, Bi ...suffers from dramatic volume fluctuation and significant pulverization during the discharge/charge processes, resulting in fast capacity decay. Herein, we synthesize Bi nanoparticles confined in carbonaceous nanospheres (denoted as Bi@C) for PIBs by first utilizing BiOCl nanoflakes as a hard template and a Bi precursor. The construction of the loose structure buffers the mechanical stresses resulting from the volume expansion of Bi during the alloying reaction and avoids the fracture of the electrode structure, thus improving the cycling performance. Moreover, the carbonaceous layers increase the electronic conductivity and disperse the Bi nanoparticles, enhancing the charge transportation and ionic diffusion, which further promotes the rate capability of Bi@C. It exhibits a superior capacity (389 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1 after 100 cycles), excellent cycling stability (206 mAh g–1 at 500 mA g–1 over 1000 cycles), and an improved rate capability (182 mAh g–1 at 2.0 A g–1). This work provides a new structuring strategy in alloying materials for boosting reversible and stable potassium-ion storage.
In this study, an ordered Ag/TiO2/Ni nanopillar arrays hybrid substrate was designed, and the charge transfer (CT) process at the metal–semiconductor and substrate–molecule interface was investigated ...based on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of 4-Aminothiophenol (PATP) absorbed on the composite system. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption of Ag changes due to the regulation of TiO2 thickness, which leads to different degrees of CT enhancement in the system. The CT degree of SERS spectra obtained at different excitation wavelengths was calculated to study the contribution of CT enhancement to SERS, and a TiO2 thickness-dependent CT enhancement mechanism was proposed. Furthermore, Ag/TiO2/Ni nanopillar arrays possessed favorable detection ability and uniformity, which has potential as a SERS-active substrate.
Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common complication that leads to long-term cognitive impairments and increased mortality in sepsis survivors. The mechanisms underlying this complication ...remain unclear and an effective intervention is lacking. Accumulating evidence suggests the nucleotide-binding domain-like receptor protein3 (NLRP3)/caspase-1 pathway is involved in several neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, we hypothesized that the NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway is involved in NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis, maturation and release of inflammatory cytokines, and cognitive deficits in SAE. We used the NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950 and the caspase-1 inhibitor Ac-YVAD-CMK to study the role of the NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway in pyroptosis and cognitive deficits in a mouse model of SAE. Mice were randomly assigned to one of six groups: sham+saline, sham+MCC950, sham+Ac-YVAD-CMK, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)+saline, CLP+MCC950, and CLP+Ac-YVAD-CMK. Surviving mice underwent behavioral tests or had hippocampal tissues collected for histochemical analysis and biochemical assays. Our results show that CLP-induced hippocampus-dependent memory deficits are accompanied by increased NLRP3 and caspase-1 positive cells, and augmented protein levels of NLRP3, caspase-1, gasdermin-D, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus. In addition, administration of MCC950 or Ac-YVAD-CMK rescues cognitive deficits and ameliorates increased hippocampal NLRP3-mediated neuronal pyroptosis and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Our results suggest that the NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway-induced pyroptosis mediates cognitive deficits in a mouse model of SAE.
Landslide seismic signals support researchers to estimate magnitudes and locations of landslides. They can serve as a crucial data for landslide warning systems. However, the randomness of landslide ...locations makes the acquisition of landslide-induced seismic signals difficult and limits the number of available field data. The objectives of this study are to establish a numerical modeling approach to examine the characteristics of seismic signals induced by landslides and perform parametrical study. The two-dimensional particle flow code (PFC) and Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) are coupled to simulate the landslide process. The force and velocity data at the coupled interfaces of FLAC and PFC are transferred back and forth via a Socket I/O connection. Four locations were monitored for the induced vertical seismic signals, including velocity, acceleration, and stress histories. The signals were analyzed by Hilbert-Huang transform to obtain the time-frequency spectrograms for examining the characteristics of the signals. The particle size, wall friction, particle friction, and parallel bond of PFC input parameters were parametrically investigated. The Xiaolin landslide in 2009 was successfully simulated, and the characteristics of the seismic signals were studied and compared with the data from a broadband seismic station. These results demonstrate that terrain and transition in the movement type of a complex landslide do influence the seismic signals. A landslide with larger rock particles generates lower-frequency content seismic signals. Also, there can be approximately 40 s to escape before a large-scale landslide hits if seismic instrumentation is installed. The method proposed can be further applied for studies on many other large-scale rock avalanches to verify recorded signals and further correlate the signals with the landslide characteristics.
Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of general anesthesia (GA)-induced neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment in aged rodents. ...However, the cellular basis for cognitive impairment is still not fully understood, and effective pharmacologic agents targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome during GA are lacking. This study explores the protective effects of the NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor MCC950 on pyroptosis and cognitive impairment in aged mice exposed to isoflurane. Seventy-two 15-month-old male C57BL/6 mice were randomized to receive 2 h of 1.5% isoflurane plus 30% oxygen (O
) or 30% O
alone, respectively. MCC950 (10 mg/kg) or vehicle was intraperitoneally administered 30 min before gas inhalation. Brain tissues were harvested for histochemical analysis and biochemical assays. Learning and memory abilities were evaluated by behavioral tests. We found that isoflurane GA caused upregulations of hippocampal NLRP3, cleaved caspase-1, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-18 and the activation of pyroptosis, which is NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent; this consequently gave rise to neuronal damage and cognitive impairment in aged mice. Interestingly, pretreatment with NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor MCC950 not only provided a neuroprotective effect against the inflammasome activation but also ameliorated pyroptosis and cognitive impairment in aged mice exposed to isoflurane. Our data demonstrate that pyroptosis is involved in NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated isoflurane-induced cognitive impairment in aged mice and suggest that inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome with MCC950 may have clinically therapeutic benefits for elderly patients undertaking GA.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy and has been considered as a leading cause of cancer death in women. Exploring the mechanism of breast cancer metastasis is extremely important for seeking novel therapeutic strategies and improving prognosis.
Clinical specimens and pathological characteristics were collected for evaluating the expression of forkhead box class O 3a (FOXO3a) and twist-related protein 1 (TWIST-1) in breast cancer tissues. CCK-8 assay was used to analyze cell proliferation. Cell invasion and migration were assessed by transwell assays. The expression of FOXO3a, TWIST-1, miR-10b, CADM2, FAK, phosphor-AKT and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related protein (N-cadherin, E-cadherin and vimentin) were analyzed by RT-qPCR, immunohistochemical staining, immunofluorescence assay or western blot, respectively. Xenograft mouse models were used to analyze the role of the FOXO3a in breast cancer.
FOXO3a was down-regulated and TWIST-1 was up-regulated in breast cancer tissues. Overexpression of FOXO3a or knockdown of TWIST-1 suppressed the proliferation, invasion, migration and EMT of breast cancer cells. Overexpression of TWIST-1 could reverse the effect of FOXO3a on the proliferation, invasion, migration and EMT of breast cancer. Moreover, FOXO3a suppressed the growth and metastasis of breast cancer by targeting TWIST1 in vivo.

Gasdermin D (GSDMD)-mediated pyroptotic cell death is implicated in the pathogenesis of cognitive deficits in sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE), yet the underlying mechanisms remain largely ...unclear. Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) facilitates mitochondrial fission and ensures quality control to maintain cellular homeostasis during infection. This study aimed to investigate the potential role of the GSDMD/Drp1 signaling pathway in cognitive impairments in a mouse model of SAE.
C57BL/6 male mice were subjected to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) to establish an animal model of SAE. In the interventional study, mice were treated with the GSDMD inhibitor necrosulfonamide (NSA) or the Drp1 inhibitor mitochondrial division inhibitor-1 (Mdivi-1). Surviving mice underwent behavioral tests, and hippocampal tissues were harvested for histological analysis and biochemical assays at corresponding time points. Haematoxylin-eosin staining and TUNEL assays were used to evaluate neuronal damage. Golgi staining was used to detect synaptic dendritic spine density. Additionally, transmission electron microscopy was performed to assess mitochondrial and synaptic morphology in the hippocampus. Local field potential recordings were conducted to detect network oscillations in the hippocampus.
CLP induced the activation of GSDMD, an upregulation of Drp1, leading to associated mitochondrial impairment, neuroinflammation, as well as neuronal and synaptic damage. Consequently, these effects resulted in a reduction in neural oscillations in the hippocampus and significant learning and memory deficits in the mice. Notably, treatment with NSA or Mdivi-1 effectively prevented these GSDMD-mediated abnormalities.
Our data indicate that the GSDMD/Drp1 signaling pathway is involved in cognitive deficits in a mouse model of SAE. Inhibiting GSDMD or Drp1 emerges as a potential therapeutic strategy to alleviate the observed synaptic damages and network oscillations abnormalities in the hippocampus of SAE mice.
