We present the afterglow light curves produced by the deceleration of a nonrelativistic ejecta mass in a stratified circumstellar medium with a density profile n(r) ∝ r−k with k = 0, 1, 1.5, 2, and ...2.5. Once the ejecta mass is launched with equivalent kinetic energy parameterized by E(>β) ∝ β− (where β is the ejecta velocity) and propagates into the surrounding circumstellar medium, it first moves with constant velocity (the free-coasting phase), and later it decelerates (the Sedov-Taylor expansion). We present the predicted synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton light curves during the free-coasting phase and the subsequent Sedov-Taylor expansion. In particular cases, we show the corresponding light curves generated by the deceleration of several ejecta masses with different velocities launched during the coalescence of binary compact objects and the core collapse of dying massive stars, which will contribute at distinct timescales, frequencies, and intensities. Finally, using the multiwavelength observations and upper limits collected by a large campaign of orbiting satellites and ground telescopes, we constrain the parameter space of both the kilonova (KN) afterglow in GW170817 and the possibly generated KN afterglow in S190814bv. Further observations on timescales of years post-merger are needed to derive tighter constraints.
ABSTRACT
The detection of a prolonged flaring activity from blazar TXS 0506+056 in temporal and spatial coincidence with the energetic neutrino IceCube-170922A provided evidence about the ...photohadronic interactions in this source. However, analysis of the archival neutrino and multiwavelength data from the direction of this blazar between 2014 September and 2015 March revealed a ‘neutrino flare’ without observing quasi-simultaneous activity in the gamma-ray bands, posing challenges to established models. Electron–positron (e±) pairs generated from the accretion discs have been amply proposed as a mechanism of bulk acceleration of sub-relativistic and relativistic jets. These pairs annihilate inside the source producing a line around the electron mass, which is blueshifted in the observed frame (on Earth) and redshifted in the frame of the dissipation region of the jet. The redshifted photons in the dissipation region interact with accelerated protons, producing high-energy neutrinos that contribute significantly to the diffuse neutrino flux in the ∼10–20 TeV energy range in connection with gamma-rays from the photopion process, which can be detected by future MeV orbiting satellites. Based on this phenomenological model, we can explain the ‘neutrino flare’ reported in 2014–1015.
The BL Lac Markarian 501 exhibited two flaring activities in the very-high-energy (VHE) band in May 2009. The lack of correlation between X-rays and TeV gamma-rays without increasing in other bands ...suggested that more than one emission zone could be involved. Moreover, fast variability in the flaring state was observed, indicating that the emission zones responsible must have small sizes. We use a lepto-hadronic model with two-zone emission to explain the spectral energy distribution during quiescent and these flaring states. In the proposed scenario, the photopion processes explain the VHE flaring activities successfully, and variability constraints place the activity in a zone located near the jet’s base or named inner blob, while synchrotron self-Compton emission describing the X-ray signature during that flaring state occurs in the zone situated far the central engine or named outer blob.
ABSTRACT
The emission of the so-called extreme BL Lacs poses challenges to the particle acceleration models. The hardness of their spectrum, ≲ 2, in the high-energy band demands unusual parameters ...using the standard one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model with a deficient magnetized plasma. Some authors use either two-zone or hadronic/lepto-hadronic models to relax these atypical values. In this work, we present a lepto-hadronic two-zone model to explain the multi-wavelength observations of the six best-known extreme BL Lacs. The very-high-energy gamma-ray observations are described by the photo-hadronic processes in a blob close to the AGN core and by SSC and external inverse Compton-processes in an outer blob. The photo-hadronic interactions occur when accelerated protons in the inner blob interact with annihilation line photons from a sub-relativistic pair plasma. The X-ray observations are described by synchrotron radiation from the outer blob. The parameter values found from the description of the spectral energy distribution for each object with our phenomenological model are similar to each other, and lie in the typical range reported in BL Lacs.
The results of 8 yr R-band photopolarimetric data of blazar Mrk 421 collected from 2008 February to 2016 May are presented, along with extensive multiwavelength observations covering radio to TeV ...γ-rays around the flares observed in 2008 May, 2010 March, and 2013 April. The most important results are found in 2013, when the source displayed in the R band a very high brightness state of 11.29 0.03 mag (93.60 1.53 mJy) on April 10 and a polarization degree of 11.00% 0.44% on May 13. The analysis of the optical data shows that the polarization variability is due to the superposition of two polarized components that might be produced in two distinct emitting regions. An intranight photopolarimetric variability study carried out over seven nights after the 2013 April maximum found flux and polarization variations on the nights of April 14, 15, 16, and 19. In addition, the flux shows a minimum variability timescale of Δt = 2.34 0.12 hr, and the polarization degree presents variations of ∼1%-2% on a timescale of Δ t ∼ minutes. Also, a detailed analysis of the intranight data shows a coherence length of the large-scale magnetic field of pc, which is the same order of magnitude as the distance traveled by the relativistic shocks. This result suggests that there is a connection between the intranight polarimetric variations and spatial changes of the magnetic field. Analysis of the complete R-band data along with the historical optical light curve found for this object shows that Mrk 421 varies with a period of 16.26 1.78 yr.

. The lobes of W50 in which the jets terminate, about 40 parsecs from the central source, are expected to accelerate charged particles, and indeed radio and X-ray emission consistent with electron synchrotron emission in a magnetic field have been observed
. At higher energies (greater than 100 gigaelectronvolts), the particle fluxes of γ-rays from X-ray hotspots around SS 433 have been reported as flux upper limits
. In this energy regime, it has been unclear whether the emission is dominated by electrons that are interacting with photons from the cosmic microwave background through inverse-Compton scattering or by protons that are interacting with the ambient gas. Here we report teraelectronvolt γ-ray observations of the SS 433/W50 system that spatially resolve the lobes. The teraelectronvolt emission is localized to structures in the lobes, far from the centre of the system where the jets are formed. We have measured photon energies of at least 25 teraelectronvolts, and these are certainly not Doppler-boosted, because of the viewing geometry. We conclude that the emission-from radio to teraelectronvolt energies-is consistent with a single population of electrons with energies extending to at least hundreds of teraelectronvolts in a magnetic field of about 16 microgauss.
The radio galaxy IC310 located in the Perseus Cluster is one of the brightest objects in the radio and X-ray bands, and one of the closest active galactic nuclei observed in very-high energies. In ...GeV - TeV γ-rays, IC310 was detected in low and high flux states by the MAGIC telescopes from October 2009 to February 2010. Taking into account that the spectral energy distribution (SED) up to a few GeV seems to exhibit a double-peak feature and that a single-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model can explain all of the multiwavelength emission except for the non-simultaneous MAGIC emission, we interpret, in this work, the multifrequency data set of the radio galaxy IC310 in the context of homogeneous hadronic and leptonic models. In the leptonic framework, we present a multi-zone SSC model with two electron populations to explain the whole SED whereas for the hadronic model, we propose that a single-zone SSC model describes the SED up to a few GeVs and neutral pion decay products resulting from pγ interactions could describe the TeV - GeV γ-ray spectra. These interactions occur when Fermi-accelerated protons interact with the seed photons around the SSC peaks. We show that, in the leptonic model the minimum Lorentz factor of second electron population is exceedingly high γe ∼ 105 disfavoring this model, and in the hadronic model the required proton luminosity is not extremely high ∼1044 erg/s, provided that charge neutrality between the number of electrons and protons is given. Correlating the TeV γ-ray and neutrino spectra through photo-hadronic interactions, we find that the contribution of the emitting region of IC310 to the observed neutrino and ultra-high-energy cosmic ray fluxes are negligible.
Abstract
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are one of the most promising transient events for studying multiwavelength observations in extreme conditions. Observation of GeV photons from bursts would provide ...crucial information on GRB physics, including the off-axis emission. The Second Gamma-ray Burst Catalog (2FLGC) has been announced by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) Collaboration. This catalog includes 29 bursts with photon energy higher than 10 GeV. While the synchrotron forward-shock model has well explained the afterglow data of GRBs, photon energies greater than 10 GeV are very difficult to interpret within this framework. To study the spectral and temporal indices of those bursts described in 2FLGC, Fraija et al. (2022a) proposed the closure relations (CRs) of the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission of GRBs emitted from an on-axis jet, which decelerates in stellar-wind and constant-density medium. In this paper, we extend the CRs of the SSC afterglow from an on-axis scenario to an off-axis scenario, including the synchrotron afterglow radiation that seems to be off-axis. In order to investigate the spectral and temporal index evolution of those bursts reported in 2FLGC, we consider hydrodynamical evolution with energy injection in the adiabatic and radiative regimes for an electron distribution with a spectral index of 1 <
p

The results show that the most likely scenario for synchrotron emission corresponds to the stellar wind whether or not there is energy injection and that the most likely scenario for SSC emission corresponds to the constant density when there is no energy injection and to the stellar wind when there is energy injection.

, produced when PeV CRs collide with the ambient gas, can provide the decisive evidence of proton acceleration up to the knee. Here we report the discovery by the High Altitude Water Cerenkov (HAWC) observatory of the
γ
-ray source, HAWC J1825-134, whose energy spectrum extends well beyond 200 TeV without a break or cutoff. The source is found to be coincident with a giant molecular cloud. The ambient gas density is as high as 700 protons cm
−3
. While the nature of this extreme accelerator remains unclear, CRs accelerated to energies of several PeV colliding with the ambient gas likely produce the observed radiation.
